Ed McBain Ed McBain Books Script Writing for Alfred Hitchcock by Ed McBain essay Ed McBain is just one of the many pseudonyms used by one prolific writer, Evan Hunter. Born in New York in 1926 as Salvatore A. Lombino, the master of the police procedural has used many pen names, including Curt Cannon, Ezra Hannon, and Richard Marsten, but he is best known for his police novels written under the name Ed McBain. Mystery Time Line Welcome Mystery Time Line Profiles History of the Mystery Cicero Edgar Allan Poe Sherlock Holmes ... Nancy Drew Mystery Greats Websites Agatha Christie Nancy Drew Alfred Hitchcock Charlie Chan ... Clue Chronicles The first, "Cop Hater" (1956), introduced the famous members of the 87th precinct, set in the fictional city of Isola. Steve Carella, Meyer Meyer, Andy Parker, and the other hard-working precinct cops are usually seen tackling several cases simultaneously and have remained ageless over the course of four decades. This was necessary, according to McBain, because, he says, "If I hadn't done that, I'd now have a precinct of doddering old men." (Great Detectives) In McBain's books, police life is presented in a gritty, realistic style that has only added to their popularity.

written as Evan Hunter Ed McBain (Evan Hunter) BIO Ed McBain is the only American to receive the Diamond Dagger, the British Crime Writers Association's highest award. He also holds the Mystery Writers of America's coveted Grand Master Award. His books have sold over one hundred million copies worldwide, ranging from his first bestselling novel, THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, to the bestseller PRIVILEGED CONVERSATION, both written under his own name, Evan Hunter. He also wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds . His most recent 87th Precinct novel was THE FRUMIOUS BANDERSNATCH. Hunter passed away at the age of 78, in July of 2005. INTERVIEW January 21, 2000 The prolific Ed McBain - real name Evan Hunter - writes prolifically under these two names and many others in the past. As Ed McBain he's produced fifty 87th Precinct novels starting with COP HATER published in 1956 and now his latest, THE LAST DANCE. Longtime fan Senior Writer Joe Hartlaub has been following Hunter and his pseudonyms for years. Thrilled that 87th Precinct Detective Steve Carella had returned for another case, Hartlaub was eager to interview the author. There's a lot you probably didn't know about Hunter, such as his very colorful and varied professional background - a stint in the Navy, a brief moment as a lobster salesman, a successful career as a literary agent, and then finally, an author. Find out everything else you don't know about this highly successful and talented writer, who incidentally was never a cop despite his dead-on portrayals on paper and on film, in this forthright interview.

was b est known among crime fiction fans and rightfully so as the creator of the ground-breaking 87th Precinct police procedural series. But he also managed to contribute to this genre ours with such notable gumshoes as Matt Cordell Ben Smoke Matthew Hope and Curt Cannon . He even wrote one of the all-time great spoofs of the genre, " Kiss Me Dudley ," featuring Dudley Sledge , a private peeper who knows how to handle both women AND fish. But his writings went far beyond just the crime genre. Under a slew of pseudonyms, he wrote horror, science fiction, melodrama, westerns and children's books. He wrote short stories, novels, television shows, films and even a couple of plays, and saw much of his work adapted to both TV and film. In fact, his first large-scale success was the film version of his novel The Blackboard Jungle Still, he'll always be remembered for creating the cops of the 87th Precinct, Isola's finest. Why Isola, instead of New York City? Here's McBain's take on it, from The Craft of Crime , edited by John C. Carr, Houghton Mifflin, 1983:

His 87th Precinct police-procedural novels, the first of which was Cop Hater (1956), inspired not only innumerable tough-guy knockoffs, but also TV dramas such as Hill Street Blues NYPD Blue , and The Shield Isola " ("island" in Italian). Bringing together those multiple, and sometimes contradictory, parts of a crime novelist who so often inspired hyperbole ("To say that Ed McBain is a giant among popular writers is like saying the Colossus of Rhodes was a pretty fair piece of municipal sculpture," opined interviewer/author John C. Carr) will be one task for speakers at a public memorial service to be held tomorrow, Saturday, October 15, in honor of McBain, who died of cancer of the larynx on July 6 . That service is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Manhattan's Ethical Culture Society (2 West 64th Street, at the corner of Central Park West). Saturday would have been the author's 79th birthday.

    Ed McBain
Interviewed by Barry Forshaw He did it first. You think Hill Street Blues inaugurated the group of detectives scenario, each with his own equally important agenda? No - Ed McBain, aka Evan Hunter, was responsible for this innovation in the remarkable series of 87th Precinct novels, which began with Cop Hater way back in 1956. With very few misfires, McBain has developed this rich, taut and stylish series of books into the locus classicus of the police procedural. Even in this country, The Bill is indebted to McBain's influence. But McBain has also enjoyed success under his own (adopted) name of Evan Hunter, creating the definitive juvenile delinquent novel in The Blackboard Jungle (the film of which memorably started riots to the strains of Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock). As Hunter, he also produced powerful dramas such as Strangers When We Meet (although the latter tends to read as proto-soap opera these days). His finest hour using the Hunter sobriquet was probably the screenplay for Hitchcock's The Birds (maligned in its day, but now seen as a crucial element in a film finally recognised as one of Hitchcock's late masterpieces).
