    German Indians (press, mentions, etc.)
Karl May Festival No country has more of a fascination with Native Americans than Germany. For more than a century, hobby clubs, open air theater festivals, fairs, and carnival costumes have been developing. Besides a deep-rooted romantic view of a pre-industrial past, and the imagery of Cowboy Western movies, the primary cause of this fascination is the work of the 19th century writer Karl May. Although he didn't visit North America until late in life, he wrote many novels about the Wild West, portraying Native Americans as heroes and whites as villains. Although the "pro-Indian" slant of Karl May can be understood as a progressive, anti-colonial message, his writings were also an important part of Nazi mythology. German fascists identified with the Indian as noble savage and as the victim of a modern, corrupt, overly intellectual world. The Nazis' home-spun victim mythology formed the basis for retaliatory aggression against those who they perceived as threats. Ironically, while Hitler was researching American Indian reservations as models for concentration camps, he made his generals carry around volumes of Karl May's writings. After World War II, the east-west division of Germany caused a split in the culture of Native American emulation. In East Germany Indian fan clubs increased because they were a legal opportunity to gather in large numbers and Karl May's anti-American/anti-capitalist messages conformed to eastern bloc doctrine. In West Germany, the influx of American popular culture expanded the imagery of the American West, but conflicted with Karl May's sympathetic descriptions of indigenous Americans. Although an intense pro-Americanism developed after World War II, the notion of Americans as invaders, of course, ties in with the resentment felt during the U.S. military occupation. Also, postwar Germans, discouraged from nationalism and group ritual, sense a permission to find themselves in other ethnic groups. And, perhaps, criticism of atrocities against Native Americans also gives Germans some sense of relief from their own shame of the holocaust.

This Water Pipe Story May start off Boring, but It’s Worth Reading because of the Ending
I broke a water pipe in our backyard because I dug up our banana trees. It was a mess; there was water everywhere and now I had to fix it. If that’s what you’re thinking then you’d be missing out on a great moment in my life and possibly yours if you can apply the same techniques. So, I was digging the hole and getting the mud out of my way. I saw the white plastic pipe busted to pieces. I threw my shovel to the ground and sighed, fell to my knees and dug away the muck with my hands. After clearing out the mud I cleaned off the pipe and knew what I had to buy at the hardware store. When I got back I started the process of digging more dirt away so I could lift more of the pipe out of the ground. At this point I was over two hours into the job and wasn’t sure how much longer it was going to take. I was missing out on relaxing with my wife and training my new puppy. I dropped to my knees again and sighed, reached into the bag for the new pipefittings, and suddenly the great moment in my life struck. Underneath all my internal complaining there was joy inside. I was dealing with my emotions on the surface, but never thought to look past this. I never recognized the different levels of feelings throughout this experience. I began to feel the weight of the plastic pipe in my hand. The smooth surface, my knees in the dirt, and the gentle current of joy flowing beneath everything I did.

    The Karl May Connection
As a boy, Hitler liked to read about American cowboys and Indians. He was particularly found of the adventure stories of Karl May, a German who wrote about the American frontier. May, who never visited the United States, concocted a strange "Western" language which the heroes in his novels spoke with a Teutonized Texan drawl. As a schoolboy, Hitler always kept one of May's books concealed under his desk and read it while the teacher was giving lengthy explanations. Hitler was not alone in his admiration for May's stories and heroes. May's books sold by the thousands, and a Old Shatterhand, the main character in May's novels, became the hero of a whole generation of German boys. Few of them, however, could match Hitler in the intensity of his loyalty or the longevity of his infatuation. When Hitler became a chancellor he had a special shelf built in his library to hold, in a place of honor, the whole collection of May's novels, specially bound in vellum. It is known that Hitler read and reread May's stories and highly commended them to his associates and friends. Some authors believe that it was in Karl May's books where Hitler became infatuated with the Swastika. The swastika was used by many North American Indians, and it frequently appeared in illustrations of May's novels.

      Science as Falsification
The following excerpt was originally published in Conjectures and Refutations
      by Karl R. Popper
hen I received the list of participants in this course and realized that I had been asked to speak to philosophical colleagues I thought, after some hesitation and consolation, that you would probably prefer me to speak about those problems which interests me most, and about those developments with which I am most intimately acquainted. I therefore decided to do what I have never done before: to give you a report on my own work in the philosophy of science, since the autumn 1919 when I first begin to grapple with the problem, " When should a theory be ranked as scientific? " or " Is there a criterion for the scientific character or status of a theory? The problem which troubled me at the time was neither, "When is a theory true?" nor "When is a theory acceptable?" my problem was different. I wished to distinguish between science and pseudo science ; knowing very well that science often errs, and that pseudoscience may happen to stumble on the truth. empirical method , which is essentially inductive But as it was not the example of astrology which lead me to my problem, I should perhaps briefly describe the atmosphere in which my problem arose and the examples by which it was stimulated. After the collapse of the Austrian empire there had been a revolution in Austria: the air was full of revolutionary slogans and ideas, and new and often wild theories. Among the theories which interested me Einstein's theory of relativity was no doubt by far the most important. The three others were Marx's theory of history, Freud's psycho-analysis, and Alfred Adler's so-called "individual psychology."

August 29th - Jim Breuer Show Karl had quite a full weekend, playing at 3 Nuclear Assault shows and a Far Cry gig, and followed by the Jim Breuer show on Monday.
Friday night, Karl and I drove up to L'Amours in Brooklyn, NY, now known as the Brooklyn Music Terminal, for the first of the U.S. Nuclear Assault shows. Considering it was rush hour, we made it there in record time. The rest of the band (Glen Evans, Dan Lilker and John Connelly) were already there.
We then had to wait for the 6 (yes, SIX) opening bands to go through their sets. The band didn't go on until 1:15am, but the crowd was still there and showed their support. After the show, Karl and I drove home, and arrived safely at 4am.
On Saturday at 11:45am, Karl and I were back in the van, going to the 125th Anniversary Somerville Fire Department celebration. It was in Somerville High School's football field, and the band played 3 sets on a large, covered stage. It was so windy, we were just waiting for the main speakers to go sailing off the stage, they were shaking so much. They stayed put, and the band sounded great!!! Thanks to the Somerville Fire Department for having us there. It was a great day, and a great time was had by all!

Bacteria May Thrive in Antarctic Lake

Photos Credit: courtesy of David M. Karl, et al Note About Images Two separate investigations of ice drilled at Lake Vostok, a suspected body of subglacial water deep in the Antarctic interior, indicate that bacteria may live thousands of meters below the ice sheet. The findings by two National Science Foundation-funded researchers are scheduled for publication in the Dec. 10 issue of Science Two research teams, led by David M. Karl from the University of Hawaii and John C. Priscu of Montana State University, examined fragments of ice taken from roughly 3,600 meters (11,700 feet) below the surface about 120 meters (393 feet) above the interface of ice and suspected water. Both teams found bacteria in "accreted" ice, or ice believed to be refrozen lake water.
