  • Salon.com Signs Armistead Maupin to First of Its Kind Web Audio Serial Audio Broadcast of Maupin's Latest Book 'The Night Listener' Will Proceed Hard Cover Release Salon.com (Nasdaq: SALN ) announced today that bestselling author Armistead Maupin's new novel, "The Night Listener," will be the first book ever broadcast in its entirety as a spoken-word serial on the Web prior to its publication in hardcover. Beginning Sept. 5, a new installment will be released each weeknight (Monday through Friday) at 8 p.m. in streaming-audio format at http://www.salon.com/books/maupin . The novel will be read by Maupin, and the broadcast will run through Friday, Sept. 29. A downloadable digital audio book version of the "The Night Listener" will be available on Salon.com upon release of the hard cover and audio editions by HarperCollins. "I'm ecstatic that Armistead chose to launch 'The Night Listener' as an audio serial on Salon," said David Talbot, founder and editor in chief of Salon.com. "He's a master of the serial form I remember how he burst into public view in the '70s with his 'Tales of the City' serial in the San Francisco Chronicle. It makes perfect sense that he would use our San Francisco-based company to update the concept for the 21st century." The narrator of "The Night Listener" is a late-night radio storyteller whose phone friendship with a young fan entangles him in a mystery that compels him to reexamine his own life. "'The Night Listener' is all about the power of voices, so the intimacy of Internet radio combined with the literary origins of Salon struck me as an ideal match for the material," said Maupin's business partner, Terry Anderson of Literary Bent LLC. "Armistead loves the thought of telling bedtime stories to the world, so Salon's millions of monthly users, and our long history with Salon, made it easily our first choice for allowing him to do just that." Salon published an essay by Maupin in its inaugural issue in November 1995.

Guests: E.J. Dionne, James Bamford, Armistead Maupin KEITH OLBERMANN, HOST:  Which of these stories will you be talking about tomorrow? She tells him to resign.  He tells her he did not paint a rosy picture of Iraq.  Hilly versus Rummy, as the former first lady again insists he should become a former secretary of defense. Is somebody trying to make Dr. Rice a former secretary of state?  Are neocons in the Bush administration actually siphoning secret intelligence to Israel in hopes of keeping the war going, the war Rice is ostensibly trying to stop?  James Bamford says so in “Rolling Stone.”  He‘ll join us. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, “THE NIGHT LISTENER”) ROBIN WILLIAMS:  I read your book.  (INAUDIBLE). (END VIDEO CLIP) OLBERMANN:  The new movie premiering today, “The Night Listener,” about media people who believe a young boy is in danger, and then begin to doubt the boy even exists.  Based on a true story that happened to my guest, Armistead Maupin, and happened to me.  We will tell you what really happened. And your cell phone.  It could kill you.

INTERVIEW WITH ARMISTEAD MAUPIN by Rex Wockner Tales of the City author Armistead Maupin is back with a book
that is part autobiography, part fictionalized autobiography,
part mystery novel, and all Maupin. The Night Listener deals with Maupin's breakup with longtime
lover Terry Anderson (via the characters Gabriel and Jess) and
follows Gabriel through a mysterious relationship with a fan
an abused teenaged boy with AIDS. Maupin, Anderson and I sat down last week in La Jolla, Calif.,
for a chat. Rex Wockner: We both [photographer Bob Gordon and I] really liked
the book, so we're telling people to read it. Armistead Maupin: Good. RW: The book seems to wander back and forth, almost from sentence
to sentence sometimes, between autobiography and fiction, from
what I know of you. AM: My work has done that from the very beginning. I've always
drawn on bits and pieces of my own life. Terry and I, as you may know, were DeDe and D'orothea in Significant Others and we were Thack and Michael in Sure of You. This time around, I've gotten a lot closer to the bone but I've still reserved the right to alter in homage to the story itself. That remains my single obsession -

New York Times Book Review Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City has blazed a singular trail through popular culturefrom a groundbreaking newspaper serial to a classic novel to a television event that entranced millions around the world. The first of six novels about the denizens of the mythic apartment house at 28 Barbary Lane, Tales is both a wry comedy of manners and a deeply involving portrait of a vanished era.
"A consummate entertainer who has made a generation laugh...It is Maupin's Dickensian gift to be able to render love convincingly."
    Edmund White, Times Literary Supplement

    Literary San Francisco: Armistead Maupin
Armistead Maupin at home. Photo by Cristina Taccone Armistead Maupin created a phenomenon when he started writing Tales of the City as a column for the Chronicle in the 1970s. Reformatted and published as books in the '80s then television films in the '90s, Tales of the City is unmatched as a diary, however fictional, of San Franciscans. The entire range from secretaries and waiters to TV hosts, movie stars and international criminals are included as characters in Maupin's tales as they are in San Francisco's own true story. The adventures of Tales heroine Mary Ann Singleton predate the Chronicle serial, having first appeared in the San Francisco edition of the Pacific Sun. As in real life, most of Maupin's characters keep one eye on their secrets while looking for love in the bay city. In addition to characters based on popular public figures, the tales take place in well known City locations. Maupin's alter ego, Michael Tolliver, wins a dance contest at the Endup but nearly loses the love of his life when Dr. Jon Fielding and his snooty Pacific Heights friends walk in during the finals.
