Armistead Maupin Chronicles His Gay Generation
by Robert Urban , August 14, 2006 Author Armistead Maupin's works have been reaching a new national audience lately. The film version of his novel The Night Listener hit theaters nationwide last week, and the miniseries based on his Tales of the City novels is currently enjoying a successful rerun on Logo. “I'm thrilled that Tales is reaching a new generation of gay people,” Maupin tells AfterElton.com. “The work manages to transcend the decades.” Maupin's literary works are often autobiographical in nature, inspired by true-life events and real people he has known. “I mine my emotions for my novels,” he says. “It's not that I have a deeply confessional nature. I actually enjoy keeping part of my life private. But I do know that the closer you get to your own heart, the more believable your work is.” A San Francisco resident since the early 1970s, Maupin's philosophy of gay life is decidedly more West Coast than East Coast. “People here are far more concerned with their insides than their outsides,” he says. “There's a lot more spiritual exploration, and the pursuit of happiness is not seen as something that involves brand names or hot bodies.” As with many gay men, Maupin's early years were uniquely influenced by a close relationship with a special, older woman figure. In his case it was his maternal grandmother, Marguerite Smith Barton.

"I didn’t expect it to hit me as hard as it did," writer and activist Armistead Maupin tells me about his intimate February 2007 wedding to partner Christopher Turner. “It felt like the most important moment of my life. This will not be progress if we suddenly have this whole new breed of gay bridezillas!”

Armistead Maupin Talks About Adapting The Night Listener Into a Feature Film
Armistead Maupin took a baffling real life experience and turned the basic story into the international bestseller The Night Listener . In Maupin's novel, radio show host Gabriel Noone begins a fatherly relationship over the phone with a young listener. The boy has been the victim of horrifying abuse and has written down his incredible story in a book which Gabriel found to be extraordinarily compelling. As the two continue their phone conversations, Gabriel begins to suspect there's something strange about the boy he's never seen in person.

Maupin's alter ego, Michael Tolliver, wins a dance contest at the Endup but nearly loses the love of his life when Dr. Jon Fielding and his snooty Pacific Heights friends walk in during the finals.
While Macondray Lane on Russian Hill is accepted as the Tales of the City location, 28 Barbary Lane, Maupin actually lived in several apartments on Telegraph Hill and Russian Hill from the time he moved to the City in the early '70s. The tales debuted in the Chronicle on May 24, 1976. Later, Maupin moved to Noe Street in the Castro before settling in Cole Valley. Since everything about Tales of the City is a composite of real life, you can be sure that Maryann, Michael, Mona Ramsey, Brian Hawkins, landlady Anna Madrigal, and others all crossed the thresholds of these locations:
Later works by Maupin include The Night Listener and Maybe The Moon.

Maupin, Armistead (b. 1944) A sharp social critic, novelist Armistead Maupin places his gay characters within a large framework of humanity, creating a social history of San Francisco during the tumultuous decades of the 1970s and 1980s. Maupin is often compared to Charles Dickens: Each wrote originally for serial publication, each frames his art for a popular audience, and each examines critically the social array of his chosen city. Like Dickens's London, Maupin's San Francisco is populated by all sorts and conditions of humankind: waifs and scoundrels, high-society hypocrites and burghers complacent in their middle-class ways, and at the center, a group of earnest seekers after a happy life. Sponsor Message.
That Maupin's gay and lesbian characters are seeded in this larger social milieu is no accident; Maupin speaks of his intention to "create a large framework of humanity and to place gay characters within that framework." The community is Maupin's theme. His San Francisco is home to interlocking networks of friends, lovers, and enemies. As these groups develop and evolve, some become supportive and nurturing, others hypocritical and stifling. This social awareness marks Maupin's emergence as a political spokesperson and critic of the Far Right and of the entertainment industry.

Michael Tolliver Lives
By Armistead Maupin
Price: On Sale: Formats: Hardcover Audio E-Book Large Print Michael Tolliver, the sweet-spirited Southerner in Armistead Maupin's classic Tales of the City series, is arguably one of the most widely loved characters in contem-porary fiction. Now, almost twenty years after ending his ground-breaking saga of San Francisco life, Maupin revisits his all-too-human hero, letting the fifty-five-year-old gardener tell his story in his own voice. Having survived the plague that took so many of his friends and lovers, Michael has learned to embrace the random pleasures of life, the tender alliances that sustain him in the hardest of times. Michael Tolliver Lives follows its protagonist as he finds love with a younger man, attends to his dying fundamentalist mother in Florida, and finally reaffirms his allegiance to a wise octogenarian who was once his landlady.

  • On Transforming Real Life into a Thriller
"What I did in 'The Night Listener' was basically take myself and some of the people that I'm closest to . . . and I cast us in what I think of as a kind of thriller of the heart, a novel that attempts to be a page-turning suspense story, but has ambitions beyond that, that wants to get into the nature of the human condition. So, in some ways it's autobiographical, in others it's not, because I've had to inject drama into real life, which is not, in and of itself, a dramatic experience. Most of real life is little tedious and contradictory and repetitive. So I've tried to tap the emotional truths of my own life, if not the actual facts of my life in order to make this suspense story more real."
  • On Portraying Middle Age
"I figure that [middle age is] what I have to examine if I'm going to continue as a writer. I've always written about my response to the life around me. That's a little scary at first, because, first of all, it takes admitting that you have moved into another realm. But it's also very liberating, once you start writing about it, to feel how many other people connect to you. I've had a lot of folks come up at book signings and say, 'Thank you, for imagining middle age for us.'"

MORE ON MONDAY: Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin
With the film version of Armistead Maupin's most recent book, The Night Listener, about to hit cinemas, I thought it was time to mention another of my all-time favourites, the Tales of the City series. Tales of the City is the first in a series of six books set in San Franciso in the late seventies and early eighties. Mary Ann Singleton is a sheltered secretary from Cleveland when she visits San Francisco for the first time and decides to stay. Moving into 28 Barbary Lane she meets and befriends a cast of outrageous but totally believable and charming characters, pretty much all of whom I fell in love with. Probably the most popular and best-known character of the series is Michael "Mouse" Tolliver, apparently based on the author himself. Mouse is just gorgeous, vulnerable and real, and even though he's a gay man I identified with him more than Mary Ann so I was very excited to hear that Maupin his finally signed a deal for a new book. It's called Michael Tolliver Lives and, though some other Tales characters may appear, it's primarily about Mouse aged 55 and living with HIV.
