    Review Summary
This fictionalized biography of Guy de Maupassant uses his dying days, suffering under the last ravages of syphilis, to anchor a series of flashbacks that bring his life into view though much of that view is tempered by the famed author's passion for sexual encounters. The rest of the vignettes on his life highlight important literary figures, his mother, his lesbian friend Gisele d'Estoc, and various other players. All seem to swirl together as the writer's mind is lost to madness and approaching death. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Dreams They had just dined together, five old friends, a writer, a doctor and
three rich bachelors without any profession. They had talked about everything, and a feeling of lassitude came over
them, that feeling which precedes and leads to the departure of guests
after festive gatherings. One of those present, who had for the last
five minutes been gazing silently at the surging boulevard dotted with
gas-lamps, with its rattling vehicles, said suddenly: "When you've nothing to do from morning till night, the days are long." "And the nights too," assented the guest who sat next to him. "I sleep
very little; pleasures fatigue me; conversation is monotonous. Never do
I come across a new idea, and I feel, before talking to any one, a
violent longing to say nothing and to listen to nothing. I don't know
what to do with my evenings." The third idler remarked: "I would pay a great deal for anything that would help me to pass just
two pleasant hours every day." The writer, who had just thrown his overcoat across his arm, turned round

Henri Ren© Albert Guy de Maupassant (5 August 1850 – 6 July 1893) was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless d©nouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s. Biography Maupassant was most likely born at the Ch¢teau de Miromesnil, near Dieppe in the Seine-Maritime department. The Maupassants were an old Lorraine family who had settled in Normandy in the middle of the 18th century. In 1846 his father had married Laure Le Poittevin. With her brother Alfred, she had been the playmate of the novelist Gustave Flaubert, who was destined to have a guiding influence on her son's life. She was a woman of no common literary accomplishments, very fond of the classics, especially Shakespeare. After separating from her husband, Le Poittevin kept her two sons, the elder Guy and younger Herv©. Until he was thirteen years old Guy lived with his mother at ‰tretat, in the Villa des Verguies, where between the sea and the luxuriant countryside, he grew very fond of nature and outdoor sports; he went fishing with the fishermen off the coast and spoke Norman with the peasants. He was deeply devoted to his mother. As he entered junior high school, he met the great author Gustave Flaubert.

Guy de Maupassant is considered by most literary historians to be the greatest short story writer who ever lived, in any century. When it comes to just telling a great story, he was the best, couldn't be topped. Nobody who reads a great Maupassant story will soon forget it.
Maupassant's strength of style and treatment of the subject lies in classic simplicity, clarity, and objective calm. Maupassant is a modern exemplar of traditional French psychological realism; he portrays his characters as unhappy victims of their greed, desire, or vanity but presents even the most sordid details of their lives without sermonizing.
Maupassant was considered shocking in his time because he wrote about prostitutes and adultery in frank and unashamed terms. He was ahead of his time in that way. Some of his stories are also Horror Fiction.

(Henri Ren© Albert) Guy De Maupassant Biography
Novelist, born probably at the Ch¢teau de Miromesnil, Dieppe, NW France. He studied at Rouen, and spent his life in Normandy. After serving as a soldier and a government clerk, he took to writing, encouraged by Flaubert, a friend of his mother's, and joined the Naturalist group led by Zola. His stories range from the short tale to the full-length novel. His first success, Boule de suif (1880, Ball of Fat), a short story about a prostitute's life during the Franco-Prussian War, led to his being in great demand by newspapers. There followed about 300 stories and several novels, including Une Vie (1883, trans A Woman's Life), and the supposedly autobiographical Bel-Ami (1885). His stories ‘Le Horla’ (Hallucination) and ‘La Peur’ (Fear) describe madness and fear with a horrifying accuracy which foreshadows the insanity which beset Maupassant in 1892, when he was committed to an asylum in Paris. Guy de Maupassant and his great novels
An article by Valerie Mamicheva Guy de Maupassant and his great novels. In 1880 the first Maupassant's book was published, it was a collection of poems, written at the end of the 70-th years of the 19th century (since 1875). The poems of Maupassant didn't exceled in originality, but they were not worse than many others, published in a Press of that time. Its cheerful tone was much alike funny erotic poems of 18th century. Also he wrote some articles and literary reviews - "Flaubert", an article about Balzac and "The French poets of 16th century". He tried himself in playwriting and in 1879 one of his plays was performed on a scene of a little theatre. In the early creations we find out many attractive features - frankness. lightness and gracefulness of a tongue. But only in "Boule de suif" he found out himself as a writer with his own view of the world, with his incredible manner of telling. In "Boule de suif" all the lifelong experience is focused. The main theme of the story is a war. The theme of a war takes a great place in works of Maupassant, and the word "war" will make him feel a great revolt against a human foolishness and against governments, organizing wars. His novels are: "Une vie"(1883), "Bel-Ami"(1885), "Mont-Oriol"(1887), "Pierre et Jean"(1888), "Fort comme la mort"(1889), "Notre coeur"(1890).

    The Necklace

    by Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893)
    Word Count: 3091
SHE WAS ONE OF THOSE PRETTY AND CHARMING GIRLS BORN, as though fate had blundered over her, into a family of artisans. She had no marriage portion, no expectations, no means of getting known, understood, loved, and wedded by a man of wealth and distinction; and she let herself be married off to a little clerk in the Ministry of Education. Her tastes were simple because she had never been able to afford any other, but she was as unhappy as though she had married beneath her; for women have no caste or class, their beauty, grace, and charm serving them for birth or family. their natural delicacy, their instinctive elegance, their nimbleness of wit, are their only mark of rank, and put the slum girl on a level with the highest lady in the land.
She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury. She suffered from the poorness of her house, from its mean walls, worn chairs, and ugly curtains. All these things, of which other women of her class would not even have been aware, tormented and insulted her. The sight of the little Breton girl who came to do the work in her little house aroused heart-broken regrets and hopeless dreams in her mind. She imagined silent antechambers, heavy with Oriental tapestries, lit by torches in lofty bronze sockets, with two tall footmen in knee-breeches sleeping in large arm-chairs, overcome by the heavy warmth of the stove. She imagined vast saloons hung with antique silks, exquisite pieces of furniture supporting priceless ornaments, and small, charming, perfumed rooms, created just for little parties of intimate friends, men who were famous and sought after, whose homage roused every other woman's envious longings.
