Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant (Aug 5, 1850 - Jul 6, 1893) is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and his work influenced Somerset Maugham, O. Henry, Anton Chekhov and Henry James among others. He was a popular French writer and fought in the Franco-Prussian war as a young man. He drew heavily on that experience and that war provides the setting for many of his stories which often depict the tragedy and suffering of innocent civilians caught in war's path. He also found inspiration in the not-so-admirable behavior of the bourgeoisie and they too are the subject of his biting pessimism. Maupassant suffered from mental illness in his later years and attempted suicide on January 2nd, 1892. He was committed to a private asylum in Paris and died the following year. His most famous work for English readers is probably The Necklace . If you are unfamiliar with his works, also consider

  • Guy de Maupassant's short story ‘‘The Necklace’’ (‘‘La parure’’) was first published in the Paris newspaper Le Gaulois on February 17, 1884, and was subsequently included in his 1885 collection of short stories Tales of Day and Night (Contes dejour et de la nuit) . Like most of Maupassant's short fiction, it was an instant success, and it has become his most widely read and anthologized story. In addition to its well-rounded characters, tight plotting, wealth of detail, and keen social commentary, ''The Necklace'' is conspicuous for its use of the "whip-crack" or ‘‘O. Henry’’ ending, in which a plot twist at the end of the story completely changes the story's meaning. Although Maupassant rarely made use of the device, its presence in this work has tied him to it irrevocably. Although it is not known where Maupassant got the idea for his story, certain connections may be made between ‘‘The Necklace’’ and the novel Madame Bovary , written by Maupassant's mentor and friend, Gustave Flaubert. Both stories feature a young, beautiful woman in a social situation that she finds distasteful. Like Madame Bovary, Mathilde Loisel attempts to escape her social station in life, but her scheming actions ultimately doom her.

Life
Print this section Born at F©camp in Normandy (Normandie) of cultured, middle-class parents, Maupassant was a mediocre student who preferred swimming, boating, and fishing at Etretat, then a newly fashionable resort on the English Channel, to school. His law studies in Paris were interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, which destroyed his family’s fortune and forced Maupassant to find work as a government office clerk. To divert himself from the office work he found tedious, he swam, boated, pursued feminine company at fashionable places, and began to write.

THE HORLA, OR MODERN GHOSTS
by Guy de Maupassant
MAY 8. What a beautiful day! I have spent all the morning lying in the grass in front of my house, under the enormous plantain tree which covers it, and shades and shelters the whole of it. I like this part of the country and I am fond of living here because I am attached to it by deep roots, profound and delicate roots which attach a man to the soil on which his ancestors were born and died, which attach him to what people think and what they eat, to the usages as well as to the food, local expressions, the peculiar language of the peasants, to the smell of the soil, of the villages and of the atmosphere itself. I love my house in which I grew up. From my windows I can see the Seine which flows by the side of my garden, on the other side of the road, almost through my grounds, the great wide Seine, which goes to Rouen and Havre, and which is covered with boats passing to and fro. On the left, down yonder, lies Rouen, that large town with its blue roofs, under its pointed, Gothic towers. They are innumerable, delicate or broad, dominated by the spire of the cathedral, and full of bells which sound through the blue air on fine mornings, sending their sweet and distant iron clang, to me; their metallic sound which the breeze wafts in my direction, now stronger and now weaker, according as the wind is stronger or lighter.

Mademoiselle Fifi
Guy de Maupassant
"Mademoiselle Fifi" is a short story by Guy de Maupassant, written in French and published anonymously in 1882 in the magazine Gil Blas. In Brussels that year, and in Paris the next year, a book with that name included it in a collection of Maupassant's short stories. It has been reprinted many times. Perhaps it was inspired by some remarks in Maupassant's 1880 story, "Boule de suif" and is another account of a fictional incident of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. It includes some sexual situations not suitable for small children. We present both the original French text here, along with an English translation adapted from a public domain edition scanned and published online by Charles Keller of the University of Virginia Electronic Text Center as one of the Short Stories of the Tragedy and Comedy of Life , 1903 (no translator given). Keller's edition includes some nice illustrations and has been donated in text form to Project Gutenberg. Here a missing paragraph has been replaced and a few phrases modernized. The German speech toward the French women has been modified, as the French would have been spoken with an accent. As an experiment in HTML, we present several pages here:

Guy de Maupassant
Excerpt from Maupassant chapter:
Maupassant’s last sane year, 1891, was a restless one. He moved from place to place, avoiding the air and noise of Paris which he said caused horrendous headaches. “The dreadful pain racks in a way no torture could equal, shatters the head, drives one crazy, bewilders the ideas, and scatters the memory like dust before the wind. A sick headache had laid hold of me, and I was perforce obliged to lie down in my bunk with a bottle of ether under my nostrils.” (Roger Williams suggests that the headaches were an expression of repressed hostility, a vegetative neurosis originating in a repressed hostility to his family. )
Maupassant identified with dogs who howl: “their howling—is a lamentable complaint addressed to nobody, going nowhere, telling you nothing.” At the same time he felt at the top of his form, planning a book, L’angélus, which he thought was to be his best: “I feel admirably fit to write this book. I have it all perfectly in my head. It was all thought out with an astonishing facility. It will be the crowning of my literary career.”
But he feared madness and spoke often of suicide. Frank Harris wrote:

Life and Works:

Henry-rené-albert-guy De Maupassant, or Guy de Maupassant, author of the naturalistic school, is generally considered to be the greatest French writer of short stories. Maupassant took the subjects for his pessimistic stories and novels chiefly from the Norman peasant life, the Franco-Prussian War, the behavior of the bourgeoisie, and the fashionable life of Paris. His short stories are characterised by their economy of style and the efficient way in which the various threads within them are neatly resolved. Some of his stories would now be considered to be horror fiction. During his last years of life, Maupassant suffered from mental illness. Maupassant was probably born at the Chateau de Miromesniel, Dieppe, on August 5, 1850, though this is not certain. The Maupassants were an old Lorraine family who had settled in Normandy in the middle of the 18th century. His maternal grandfather, Paul Le Poittevin, was Gustave Flaubert 's godfather. His parents separated when he was 11 years old. Maupassant grew up in his native Normandy. The gift of a photographic memory enabled him to gather a storehouse of information, which later helped him in his stories about the Norman people.

"Well, then, old man, off we go!"
They hoisted the foresail and weighed anchor; and the boat, feeling
herself free, glided slowly down towards the jetty on the still water
of the harbour. The breath of wind that came down the streets caught
the top of the sail so lightly as to be imperceptible, and the Pearl
seemed endowed with lifethe life of a vessel driven on by a
mysterious latent power. Pierre took the tiller, and, holding his
cigar between his teeth, he stretched his legs on the bunk, and with his eyes half-shut in the blinding sunshine, he watched the great tarred timbers of the breakwater as they glided past. When they reached the open sea, round the nose of the north pier which had sheltered them, the fresher breeze puffed in the doctor's face and on his hands, like a somewhat icy caress, filled his chest, which rose with a long sigh to drink it in, and swelling the tawny sail, tilted the Pearl on her beam and made her more lively. Jean Bart hastily
