Maugham's father was an English lawyer handling the legal affairs of the British embassy in Paris Since French law declared that all children born on French soil could be conscripted for military service, Robert Ormond Maugham arranged for William to be born at the embassy, technically on British soil, saving him from conscription into any future French wars. His grandfather, another Robert, had also been a prominent lawyer and cofounder of the English Law Society and it was taken for granted that William would follow in their footsteps. Events were to ensure this was not to be, but his older brother Viscount Maugham did enjoy a distinguished legal career, becoming

W(illiam) Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) British novelist, playwright, short-story writer, highest paid author in the world in the 1930s. Despite his popularity, Maugham did not gain serious recognition. This was expressed in his autobiography THE SUMMING UP (1938), that he stood "in the very first row of the second-raters". Maugham's skill in handling plot has been compared by critics in the manner of Guy de Maupassant . In many novels the surroundings are international and the stories are told in clear, economical style with cynical or resigned undertone. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller. It has amused me to tell stories and I have told a great many. It is a misfortune for me that the telling of a story just for the sake of the story is not an activity that is in favor with the intelligentsia. In endeavor to bear my misfortunes with fortitude." (from Creatures of Circumstance W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris, as the sixth and youngest son of the solicitor to the British embassy. He learned French as his native tongue. At the age of 10, Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St. Thomas' medical school, but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays.

His first play, A Man of Honor , was produced in 1903. Four of his plays ran simultaneously in London in 1904. Maugham's breakthrough novel was the semi-autobiographical Of Human Bondage (1915), which is usually considered his outstanding achievement.

A Biography

Born in Paris, of Irish ancestry, Somerset Maugham was to lead a fascinating life and would become famous for his mastery of short evocative stories that were often set in the more obscure and remote areas of the British Empire. Suffering from a bad stammer, he received a classic public school education at King's school in Canterbury, Kent. Rather more unconventionally he studied at Heidelburg university where he read philosophy and literature. He then studied in London, eventually qualifying as a surgeon at St Thomas's hospital. He conducted his year's medical practice in the slums of the East End. It was here that he found material for his first, rather lurid, novel Liza of Lambeth in 1897 and much of the material for his critically acclaimed autobiographical novel Of Human Bondage although this wasn't to be published until 1915. He moved to Paris where he would strike up a successful working relationship with Laurence Housman and write a number of plays that would be run in London from 1908. At the outbreak of The Great War, Maugham, at age 40 and 5'6" was both too old and too short to enlist in the military so he joined a British Red Cross ambulance unit attached to the French Army, becoming like his comtemporaries, one of many Literary Ambulance Drivers . One of his co-drivers was Desmond MacCarthy , a writer in his own right who later became literary critic for The London Sunday Times. Before long Maugham was recruited for a far more interesting assignment as secret agent in Geneva and then Petrograd. In Russia, he was given the rather mammoth job of attempting to prevent the Russian Revolution from starting. His novel

World Traveler, Famed Storyteller
By Craig Showalter
Caxtonian , September 1997 September 1997 marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of W. Somerset Maugham's first novel, Liza of Lambeth . Written during his final year of medical school, the realistic novel draws upon his experiences in treating patients from the Lambeth slums of London. The book achieved modest public acclaim—even notoriety—sufficient, in fact, for Maugham to abandon his medical career to become a full-time writer. A year after his publishing debut, he left London for Capri in Italy, beginning a lifelong pattern of travel and story-telling that became the Maugham persona for millions of readers. Over the next 60 years, he became one of the most successful writers of all time. When Maugham was born—in the British Embassy in Paris in 1874—he was destined to become a lawyer. His father and grandfather had been prominent attorneys, and his oldest brother went on to become England's Lord Chancellor. However, Maugham had a severe stammer, which left him afraid to speak; so there were no plans for him to following the family tradition. Furthermore, he was orphaned by the age of 10 and was sent to England to be raised by an uncle, a clergyman. These circumstances led the young Maugham to be shy and withdrawn; consequently he became an observer rather than an active participant, but he was able to turn this to his advantage as a writer. The unhappiness and anxiety of his early life were recounted in his autobiographical novel

William Somerset Maugham (January 25, 1874 – December 16, 1965) Well known British novelist, playwright and short-story writer, who achieved outstanding recognition as the highest paid author of the 1930s as well as his literary talent. Although his skills in handling plot-handling were compared to those of Guy de Maupassant by some critics and he was popular among many readers, Maugham’s works were not as well received by the some critics.
Maugham was born in France in 1874 as the sixth and the youngest child of an English family. His father worked as the solicitor to the British Embassy in Paris and he spoke only French till he was 11, when he was orphaned and came to England to live with his religious uncle and his family. Maugham attended King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, where he studied literature and philosophy. Later on he moved on to specialise in medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, which he completed in 1897 and became a doctor. However, Maugham did not practise medicine for a long time and gave it up altogether to become a full time writer when his first novels and plays proved successful.
Maugham’s first novel Liza of Lambeth was published in 1897, which was based on Maugham’s experiences as a doctor, especially those which acquired during the days he attended women in childbirth. His first play

Name at birth: William Somerset Maugham W. Somerset Maugham's passionate semi-autobiographical novel Of Human Bondage was published in 1915 and remains his most famous book. As a young man Maugham trained to be a doctor and his experiences as an intern in the London slums led him to write Liza of Lambeth (1897). The novel was a success and Maugham quickly traded the surgeon's knife for the writer's pen. Maugham wrote plays, novels, criticism and essays, and soon became one of Britain's most popular authors; in 1908 he had four plays running simultaneously on London stages. In later years Maugham became known as a master of the short story. He travelled extensively and based many of his tales in exotic locales, particularly the South Seas. "Rain," the tale of a straitlaced missionary who becomes obsessed with reforming a prostitute, is probably his best-known short story. His other books include the novels The Magician (1908) and Cakes and Ale (1930) and the essay collection A Writer's Notebook Extra credit : Maugham worked in the British intelligence department during World War I, and based his 1928 novel

Almost from the very second The Razor's Edge was made available to the reading public there has been a raging controversy as to IF the storyline as presented by Somerset Maugham in what has turned out to be one of the Bestselling Novels of the 20th Century was true or false, fact or fiction. Throughout the years a variety of literary heavyweights from both sides of the aisle - and some not so heavyweight - have taken up the challenge in an attempt to either prove or disprove the contents as being nothing but factual to the storyline being no more than a total figment of the author's imagination. Thus far, no one from either side of the spectrum has been sucessful in proving their belief is 100 percent accurate without a doubt. What you find, however, on the
