24. Harry Mathews
Short biography of the American poet and novelist (*1930).
http://www.jbeilharz.de/mathews/bio-e.html
Harry Mathews
Born in New York City in 1930, Harry Mathews has spent much of his adult life in Europe, chiefly in France. He now divides his time between France and Key West, Florida.
Mathews began publishing his poetry in 1956. He soon afterwards became associated with the so-called New York School of poets, and particularly with John Ashbery, with whom he has remained a close friend. In 1962 he published the first of five novels, The Conversions (the most recent, The Journalist , appeared in 1994; he is currently working on a new book tentatively entitled My Life in CIA ). He has published several volumes of poems, translations, and criticism.
In 1970 Mathews met the French writer Georges Perec; there began a period of literary collaboration and friendship that only ended with the Frenchman’s death in 1982. Perec introduced Mathews to the Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle (the Oulipo), a group of mathematicians and writers devoted to the investigation of constrictive forms and procedures. (The Oulipo, co-founded by Raymond Queneau, has counted Marcel Duchamp, Italo Calvino, and Jacques Roubaud among its members.)
In 1978 Mathews began teaching in the United States. His subjects have included French literature, comparative literature, and writing.

Dalkey Archive Press 1998 A book review by Danny Yee Wildly inventive and original, Tlooth The individual vignettes and episodes in Tlooth are, however, more memorable than the framing story. Some of the prison camp inmates are involved with the production and international distribution of maple syrup, using it as cover for smuggling illegal Chinese medicine. An esoteric history of a feud between the families of the Chavenders and the Allants includes a two page document in a mish-mash of languages. There is a passage describing a sexual encounter in which the orthography degrades as the encounter progresses: "She lay on her knack and i lelt straddling her, my bees in her armpits, heading over her lean, my rest head and onds owning on the floor beyarmed her." (A useful device for evading censorware, though also guaranteed to give spell-checkers the fits.) An account of a flood in Rajasthan, in which ants help to rescue cattle, falls half-way between fable and ethnography. And so forth. Though many of its individual parts are entertaining and provoking, others don't come off so successfully, and

The Journalist,

Reviewing Harry Mathews is an onerous task, for the review is a taxonomical genre, and Mathews defies classification. Perhaps it is best not to assess his writing but to process it. One could leaf through it using one of his own devices, such as "Mathews's Algorithm" - a literary machine he invented which recombines given elements according to a simple, elegant procedure. Indeed, Mathews's texts- which include Oulipian exercises, poetry, translations, reviews, short fictions, memoir, and novels - read as if generated by an algorithm with a few bugs still in it. Mathews has characterized his singular prose style as "thorny," "cranky," and "stony." Yet this writing also possesses a ruthless efficiency; Mathews insists that "in fact it just fits the space it's taking up. I'm obsessed with getting rid of words." The resultant work bears traces of an Al Gore rhythm - somewhat monotonic, deceptively bland - but it always remains decidedly, designedly off-kilter. These novels ( Tlooth, Cigarettes, The Journalist

Mathews, an American novelist, poet, and translator, has lived in France and Italy since 1952. His "bizarre and wonderful" novels, rich in "linguistic skylarkings and fantastic invention," are really games and riddles, informed by a sort of "groomed, fiendish hilarity." With John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler, Mathews founded and helped to edit the fine little magazine Locus Solus (1960–62). (See also Contemporary Authors , Vols. 21-22.) The Conversions ] is … as exhilarating to read as a fire-works set-piece is to watch. The framework on to which he ties his whizz-bangs follows the familiar pattern of a quest. The anonymous narrator, in order to inherit the enormous fortune left by Wayl, has first to be the possessor of a ritual golden adze, and second to provide answers to three riddles: "When was a stone not a king?" "What was La Messe de Sire Fadevant?" and "Who shaved the Old Man's... [The entire page is 2700 words long]

In fact, we would like to encourage everyone to send their amendments to Brian at glavey@virginia.edu, so that this page will continue to grow as the semester progresses.
Alfred Jarry and the College of ’Pataphysics Alfred Jarry (1873-1907), author of the Ubu plays, did the world the great service of "discovering" 'pataphysics, which he defined as follows: “ 'Pataphysics is the science of imaginary solutions, which symbolically attributes the properties of objects, described by their virtuality, to their lineaments.”
In a certain sense, though, 'pataphysics is by its very nature the science of the indefinable, the science of exceptions, anomalies, and the particular. The college of ’pataphysics was founded in 1949 to explore Jarry's ideas. Members of the college included Raymond Queneau, Julio Cortazar, Marcel Duchamp, and the Marx brothers. OuLiPo (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle) Initially a sub-committee of the College of ’Pataphysics, the OuLiPo began out of a collaboration between the writer Raymond Queneau and the mathematician Francois de Lionnais to produce the combinatorial sonnet sequence
