Literature does not recognize Reality as such, but only levels . Whether there is such a thing as reality, of which the various levels are only partial aspects, or whether there are only the levels, is something literature cannot decide. Literature recognizes the reality of the levels , and this is a reality (or "Reality") that it knows all the better, perhaps, for not having come to understand it by other cognitive processes. And that is already a great deal.

E-Mail Edgar Lee Masters Great Great Grandson of Hillery Masters by Charles E. Burgess This compilation of generations of Masters families is an appropriate setting for acknowledging the career of one controversial member who made the name internationally famous in literature. Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950) was strongly influenced by ancestral lore in his epic Spoon River Anthology (1915) and in many other writings more than 50 books, in all. The sweep of the nation's history and migrations permeated his books and articles although most of them were focused in the Central Illinois country where he grew to manhood. At its best, his poetry and prose communicate universal emotions and observations typical of many locales in many time periods. Spoon River , still in print, was a sensation a book of poetry that sold like a popular novel. In brief free-verse monologues called epitaphs, supposedly spoken from their graves, its characters summarized their lives in (and occasionally beyond) an Illinois village. Many spoke of positive and noble existences, particularly those drawn from

If you in the village think that my work was a good one,
Who closed the saloons and stopped all playing at cards,
And haled old Daisy Fraser before Justice Arnett,
In many a crusade to purge the people of sin;
Why do you let the milliner's daughter Dora
And the worthless son of Benjamin Pantier
Nightly make my grave their unholy pillow?

John Cowper was probably the first to claim for Masters recognition of his genius. Dreiser had lent him the unpublished galley-sheets of Spoon River , for a lecture in Guthrie's Church on modern poetry, and Powys immediately saw how original and great a piece it was. Powys as early as 1915 claimed that it was a masterpiece, 'the most original single volume of modern poetry.' Ezra Pound was of the same opinion.

Edgar Lee Masters (1869-1950) American poet and novelist, best-known as the author of SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY (1915), a series of 'auto-epitaphs' or monologues in free verse, which often contradicted the pious and optimistic epitaphs written on the gravestones. The book gained Masters a large following and set him in the vanguard of the Chicago literary renaissance. "Life all around me here in the village:
Tragedy, comedy, valor and truth,
Courage, constancy, heroism, failure -
All in the loom, and oh what patterns!"

('Petit, the Poet,' from Spoon River Anthology Edgar Lee Masters was born in Garnett, Kansas. In 1880 his family settled at Lewistown, Illinois, near Spoon River, where Masters grew up on his grandfather's farm. Lewistown and Petersburg became models for the scene of his poems in Spoon River Anthology . Masters's father, Hardin, was a lawyer, and did not encourage his son's literary aspirations, refusing to support studies in this field. Masters attended Knox College, known for its conservatism, and in 1891 he was admitted to the bar. After practicing law with his father for a year, he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a lawyer for nearly thirty years. As a result of a boyhood case of pneumonia, Masters had always been weak in the lungs, and in 1915 he contracted pneumonia through overwork. His legal clients started to decrease partly because his revealing poems about bigotry and liaisons in
