From LoveToKnow 1911
ANDREW MARVELL (1621-1678), English poet and satirist, son of Andrew Marvell and his wife Anne Pease, was born at the rectory house, Winestead, in the Holderness division of Yorkshire , on the 31st of March 1621. In 1624 his father exchanged the living of Winestead for the mastership of Hull grammar I school. He also became lecturer at Holy Trinity Church and master of the Charterhouse in the same town. Thomas Fuller Worthies of England ed. 1811, i. 165) describes him as "a most excellent preacher." The younger Marvell was educated at Hull grammar school until his thirteenth year, when he matriculated on the 14th of December 1633 (according to a doubtful statement in Wood's Athen. oxon. ) at Trinity College, Cambridge. It is related by his early biographer, Thomas Cooke, that he was induced by some Jesuit priests to leave the university. After some months he was discovered by his father in a bookseller's shop in London , and returned to Cambridge.' He contributed two poems to the Musa cantabrigiensis in 1637, and in the following year he received a scholarship at Trinity College, and took his B.A. degree in 1639. His father was drowned in 1640 while crossing the

Andrew Marvell, Various Short Poems, the Mower and the Garden group, An Horatian Ode Upon Cromwell s Return from Ireland
http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/andrew_marvell.htm
Andrew Marvell, Various Short Poems, the "Mower and the Garden" group, "An Horatian Ode: Upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland" Genre: metrically experimental lyrics, many in the pastoral mode, and a "balanced" or "Horatian" ode describing its subject's strengths and weaknesses. Form: Marvell's most common strategy is alternation of short and long lines, like the tetrameter-trimeter groups in "The Coronet" or the pentameter-tetrameter pairs in "The Mower Against Gardens." He also likes tetrameter couplets ("To His Coy Mistress," "Bermudas," "A Dialogue Between the Soul and Body," and "The Nymph Complaining"), which anticipate the pentameter couplet ("heroic couplet") whose measured balance becomes the hallmark of the next century's poetry. The "Horatian Ode" alternates tetrameter and trimeter couplets in which the first pair sets up a situation which the second, shorter pair tartly comments upon. Sometimes the sentiment is admiration (ll. 27-8, 43-4, 75-6) and at others, ambiguous truth (ll. 99-10) or outright criticism (ll. 15-16, 119-120). Characters: Marvell's most famous personae are Damon , the hapless mower in love with Juliana and hostile to gardens, the sentimentally grieving "Nymph,"

To His Coy Mistress
HAD we but world enough, and time,
This coyness, Lady, were no crime.
We would sit down and think which way
To walk and pass our long love's day.
Thou by the Indian Ganges' side
Shouldst rubies find: I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the Flood,
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow Vaster than empires, and more slow; An hundred years should go to praise Thine eyes and on thy forehead gaze; Two hundred to adore each breast; But thirty thousand to the rest; An age at least to every part, And the last age should show your heart; For, Lady, you deserve this state, Nor would I love at lower rate. But at my back I always hear And yonder all before us lie Deserts of vast eternity. Thy beauty shall no more be found, Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound My echoing song: then worms shall try That long preserved virginity, And your quaint honour turn to dust, And into ashes all my lust: The grave's a fine and private place

English metaphysical poet satire and prose works attacking repressive aspects of the state and government. Today his reputation rests mainly on a small number of skilful and graceful but perplexing and intriguing poems, which were published after his death as Miscellaneous Poems Marvell was born in Winestead, and was educated at Hull Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge. At the outbreak of the Civil War his sympathies were not fixed, though he seems to have associated with the Royalists, but by the 1650s he was committed to the Parliamentary cause, acting as tutor to the daughter of Lord Fairfax and, in 1657, assistant Latin secretary to the government, working under English poet John

19. Marv
Article by TS Eliot on the occasion of marvell s tercentenary explores the way in which marvell s wit exemplifies his century.
http://www.usask.ca/english/prufrock/marv.htm
"Andrew Marvell" First published in the Times Literary Supplement , 31 March 1921. The tercentenary of the former member for Hull deserves not only the celebration proposed by that favoured borough, but a little serious reflection upon his writing. That is an act of piety, which is very different from the resurrection of a deceased reputation. Marvell has stood high for some years; his best poems are not very many, and not only must be well known, from the Golden Treasury and the Oxford Book of English Verse Had we but world enough and time,
This coyness, lady, were no crime,

. . . I would

Love you ten years before the Flood,
...
Vaster than empires and more slow....
We notice the high speed, the succession of concentrated images, each magnifying the original fancy. When this process has been carried to the end and summed up, the poem turns suddenly with that surprise which has been one of the most important means of poetic effect since Homer: But at my back I always hear
Time's winged chariot hurrying near,

And yonder all before us lie

Deserts of vast eternity.
A whole civilization resides in these lines: Pallida Mors aequo pulsat pede pauperum tabernas,

English poet. His early work had echoes of Cavalier poets like Lovelace and Cleveland, but he is now regarded as one of the best metaphysical poets. His finest poems include The Garden, Upon Appleton House, An Horatian Ode: Upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland. He wrote prose and verse satires which were the best before Dryden's, but are no longer well known. His reputation as a lyric poet is built on To His Coy Mistress, a classic in metaphysical poetry and ranked alongside the best secular poems of John Donne.
