Introduction Chronology Mother America The Monetary Conference of the American Republics ... Home Page Introduction Founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party (1892), he organized "La Guerra Necesaria" to free his motherland from the Spanish colonialism and facing the imminent expansion of the emerging United States´ imperialism, he summoned the peoples of "Our America" to conquer their "second - independence". As delegate of the Cuban Revolutionary Party he put into practice a foreign policy conception which, based on the Latin-American and antimperialist ideas, did not limit its performance to the establishment of nexuses among governments and extended it to the peoples On December, 1889, Martí gave a speech known as "Mother America", which constitutes a foreign policy project, where the principles that should guide the relations among Latin American countries and the as the essential force to be used to restrain and oppose the conquest of Latin America by the United States were established.

Cuban Gold 10 Pesos Jose Marti design (1915-1916) Choice Almost Uncirculated (AU+) condition Jose Marti (1853-1895) We’re pleased to offer these scarce Cuban gold 10 peso coins in exceptionally nice Almost Uncirculated (AU+) condition. We’re calling them AU+ because they are extremely high grade Almost Uncirculated coins almost but not quite Brilliant Uncirculated. These coins are gorgeous for their condition, with shimmering mint luster. Produced only for two years, 1915 and 1916, Cuban 10 peso gold coins are in very limited availability because of their extremely low original mintages and even lower survival rates. On the obverse is a portrait of Jose Marti, one of Cuba’s greatest poets and freedom fighters; on the reverse is the traditional shield of Cuba. Fascinating history, ripe market Fifty years ago Cuban gold coins were almost impossible to find in the United States. In the 1960s, refugees from Castro’s regime started to arrive with these coins as part of their life savings. Still quite scarce today, they’ve found a ready market among collectors of latin and world gold coins, who prize them for their unique history and severely limited production. One fascinating fact about these coins is that they were actually minted by the U.S. at Philadelphia Mint on behalf of the Cuban government. In fact, the 5 peso and 10 peso Jose Marti gold coins were struck on the same gold blanks used for minting the classic U.S. $5 Indian and $10 Indian coins, giving those Cuban gold coins precisely the same specifications as their U.S. counterparts. It’s a fitting twist of history that the coins used by so many Cubans to finance their flights to freedom were actually produced by the U.S. Mint!

El Lector Remembers Jose Marti
by Gail Ellis Once I was a reader in the cigar factories, but those days are long over. They ended in 1931 when the factory owners banned us. We were too political they told us. It did not matter that we read what the workers asked us to read. I am an old man now. My voice is still strong, but my eyes are not as sharp as they once were. My hands shake and my step is slow and unsteady. I was a very young man, an apprentice lector, so young and so idealistic. He spoke, beseeching us to contribute our support and help fund the cause for freedom for Cuba. It was a galvanizing speech. We all cheered his words and mission to achieve freedom from domination by any country and a future "with all and for the good of all". I knew I would come to the park for the dedication of the statue today unless I, too, had departed this earth. We had waited so long to get one for our park. I held my breath as they unveiled his statue. It is so magnificent tears stream from my eyes.

Cuban poet, essayist and journalist, who became the symbol of Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain and who promoted better understanding among American nations. "No man has any special right because he belongs to any specific race; just by saying the word man, we have already said all the rights." "The truth is, Fermin, that I no longer live except for my land," he wrote to his friend Fermín Valdés, "but a thousand times I hold back what love for her demands so that it does not seem that I do it out of self-interest or to win renown." In 1875 Martí moved to Mexico and wrote for Revista Universal . He then taught literature and philosophy at the University of Guatemala and returned to Cuba where he worked in a law office. In 1879 he was again deported to Spain. New York Sun El Partido Liberal El Economista Americano , and Versos sencillos

Born in Havana, Cuba La Patria Libre (Free Fatherland) in 1869. Soon he was arrested for denouncing a pro-Spanish classmate and was sentenced to six years at hard labor. Spain where he published, , a rousing attack on Cuban prisons. He received his university education in Madrid and Zaragoza and then returned to the Western Hemisphere. (Caracas) and (Buenos Aires). He wrote everything from a magazine for children ( Edad de Oro ) to poetry ( Versos sencillos 1891), to essays on the nature of the United States which he admired for its energy and industry as well as its notable statesmen, particularly the framers of the Constitution. However, he denounced its imperialist attitude toward its southern neighbors. Yet, despite his busy literary career, he spent much of his time planning the second Cuban struggle for independence. He insisted that the next war should be short (to avoid U.S. intervention) and fought with a "republican method and spirit" (to forestall the possibility of a military dictatorship.) In 1892 he founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party to organize the coming struggle. By early 1895, his preparations were complete. He would set sail with the generals from the last struggle and considerable supplies from Fernandina, Florida. It was only in the 1920's and 1930's that Martí was embraced by a new generation of nationalist Cubans as "el apóstol," and cherished by many other Latin Americans as well. As the great Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío noted, Martí belonged to "an entire race, an entire continent."

On Liberty
Liberty is the right of every man to be honest, to think and to speak without hypocrisy....A man who obeys a bad government is not an honest man.
Like bones to the human body, the axle to the wheel, the wing to the bird, and the air to the wing, so is liberty the essence of life. Whatever is done without it is imperfect.
Man loves liberty, even if he does not know that he loves it. He is driven by it and flees from where it does not exist.
Perhaps the enemies of liberty are such only because they judge it by its loud voice. If they knew its charms, the dignity that accompanies it, how much a free man feels like a king, the perpetual inner light that is produced by decorous self-awareness and realization, perhaps there would be no greater friends of freedom than those who are its worst enemies.
Freedoms, like privileges, prevail or are imperiled together. You cannot harm or strive to achieve one without harming or furthering all.
It is terrible to speak of you, Liberty, for one who lives without you. A wild beast does not bend its knee before its tamer with greater fury. One discovers the depths of hell, and from there looks up at freemen with their sun-like arrogance. One bites the air, like a hyena biting the bars of its cage. One's spirit writhes inside the body, like a man who has been poisoned. The wretch who lives without freedom feels like dressing in the mud from the streets Those who have you, o Liberty, do not know. you. Those who do not have you should not speak of you, but win you.

American your America?, I would ask the students. A good day may bring many voices that speak about communities, regions, neighborhoods, nations, ethnicity, race, and class. Are we empowered or disempowered by our most intimate America? In "Our America," does Martí empower a nation, a people, a whole continent, with his voice? The obstacles to integrating the different views may then be discussed, leading (perhaps) to Martí's call for understanding by means of direct knowledge and respect of others and by self-esteem through self-knowledge. Stylistic issues of images and themes that surface and resurface (see below) could be related to the sociopolitical experiences of nations and groups.

mestizo culture. As you explore our America as distinct realities, you could probe the class as to basic knowledge of geography and history of various regions and the culture of different Native American peoples. Considering the historical background offered in the introduction to "Our America," you might ask the class to research topics such as: the name America , Pan-Americanism in the late nineteenth century and free trade in the late twentieth century, writing in exile, immigrant voices in New York journals, ethnic and racial issues then and now, and how to "do the right thing." An interesting comparison could be made with Jacob Riis (1849-1914), another famous New York City nocturnal walker, who immigrated from Denmark in 1870. As a reporter and photographer for the
