Marston, John Westland
1819-90, English author. Although his poetic dramas, including The Patrician's Daughter (1842) and The Favourite of Fortune (1866), were popular, he is more noteworthy for his literary criticism, most particularly his review of Swinburne's Atalanta in Calydon. His son Philip Bourke Marston, 1850-87, blind from the age of three, wrote four volumes of verse in the manner of the Pre-Raphaelites ; they include Songtide (1871) and Wind Voices (1883).

About Marston and The Plot of the Malcontent
John Marston's career first started in 1598 with the publishing of The Metamorphosis of Pigmalions Image and Certaine Satyres and The Scourge of Villanie. Then, between 1599 and 1606, Marston wrote all of his self-written plays, including Histriomastix, Jack Drum's Entertainment, Antonio and Mellida and Antonio's Revenge, What You Will, The Fawn, The Dutch Courtesan, Sophonisba, and The Malcontent. It is the last of these plays that is of importance to this particular study of Marston's work.
In The Malcontent, Marston outlines an essentially moral, Christian pattern. As Geckle points out, avarice, envy,wrath, lechery, and pride are all sins of the world that several characters in the play allow themselves to be overtaken by. Pietro, Mendoza, Ferneze, Aurelia, and Maquerelle let fortune control their lives and are doomed for unhappiness. Pietro, however, taking the protagonist Altofronto's advice, is saved after developing a moral sense and accepting God's will. Mendoza, learns too late that there is no contentment in earthly things after placing all his hope in fortune and fate. As Geckle suggests, the element of Providence in the play "does not lead the sinners to death but either to spiritual regeneration or to rejection from the new society." In this play, Marston creates a plot in which the themes and ideas are morally explicit and comment on the life of the people of the sixteenth century.

(John) Westland Marston (1819-1890)
Mine
In that tranced hush when sound sank awed to rest,
Ere from her spirit's rose-red, rose-sweet gate
Came forth to me her royal word of fate,
Did she sigh "Yes," and droop upon my breast;
While round our rapture, dumb, fixed, unexpressed
By the seized senses, there did fluctuate
The plaintive surges of our mortal state,
Tempering the poignant ecstasy too blest.
Do I wake into a dream, or have we twain,
Lured by soft wiles to some unconscious crime,
Dared joys forbid to man? Oh, Light supreme,
Upon our brows transfiguring glory rain,
Nor let the sword of thy just angel gleam
On two who entered heaven before their time!
Immortality
An Inference
If I had lived ere seer or priest unveiled
A life to come, methinks that, knowing thee,
I should have guessed thine immortality;
For Nature, giving instincts, never failed
To give the ends they point to. Never quailed
The swallow, through air-wilds, o'er tracts of sea,
To chase the summer; seeds that prisoned be
Dream of and find the daylight. Unassailed
By doubt, impelled by yearnings for the main

Enjoy the first 2-CD set collaboration of piano and cello compositions of actor, John O'Hurley and world-renown cellist, Marston.
John O'Hurley, actor, musician and spokesman, is most known for his portrayal of the eccentric catalog king, J. Peterman, on the hit show "Seinfeld." After graduating from Providence College with a theater degree, O'Hurley hit the stages of New York in several plays and operas. He is a classical trained vocalist who continues to perform alongside symphonies nationwide. His television career is vast, including daytime drama, primetime drama and comedy (such as "Seinfeld"). He has hosted the popular game show "To Tell The Truth" and often lends his voice to some of the best animated projects, such as NBC's "Father of the Pride," and "SpongeBob SquarePants". John has been composing since he was a teenager, some of the tracks on this collaboration, have been "in his head" for twenty years. He is a self-taught pianist. His sweeping legato styling comes from a long love affair with his Irish heritage.
