  • John (Marsden) Ehle (Jr.) 1925–
American novelist and nonfiction writer. Primarily a regional writer, Ehle realistically depicts the people and dialects of the South, yet centers his works around common human problems. Ehle is known for his nonstereotyped portrayals of black characters, particularly in his first novel, Move Over, Mountain (1957). His nonfiction Free Men (1965) recreates a little-known civil rights incident that occurred in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the early 1960s. The work is significant for the insights it gives into the civil rights movement as a whole. Ehle is at his best when writing about the mountain people around his hometown, Asheville, North Carolina. His recent novel, The Winter People (1982), which takes place in that setting during the depression, is praised for authenticity of characterization and dialogue. Most of his other fiction is set here or in similar areas, though in different historical periods.

    The Dead of Night

Review by D. D. Shade — September 21, 1998 Someone recently said that some of the best speculative fiction (SF) being written today is being written for young adults. I'm sure Card said it, I heard Jane Yolen say it, and Locus magazine printed it. I said it a couple of times at the 56 th World Science Fiction Convention in Baltimore, MD this past August to impress people. The reason you can say that without plagiarism is because it's true. If you've spent any time reading young adult SF, you are as expert on the topic as Card, Yolen, and Locus . There's good stuff in the young adult section. I've been given carte blanche to define "lost" in anyway that works for this column. If you've not experienced much young adult SF, then the books I want to review this month are lost. Lost to you and countless others who never stray past the adult SF section. With the end of the cold war, we don't think often about being invaded. But, I'm old enough to have been in fourth or fifth grade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. I didn't really understand what was going on but I know now how close we came to a nuclear war. I recall learning how to "duck and cover" under our desks to protect us from the nuclear blast (Ha!). Instead of fire drills we had air raid drills to the basement of the school which had been turned into an air raid shelter. Mostly we thought this was great, because it interrupted the otherwise dull school day.

The third child in a family of four, he grew up in country Victorian and when he was six years old moved with his family to Devonport, Tasmania. Here, with the help of a friend in Grade 4 at Devonport Primary School, he produced a class newspaper and began writing stories. John's first taste of city life came when he was ten and his family moved to Sydney. "I went to a very strict all boys school [King's School, Parramatta] for seven years, before starting university," he says, "but, restless and dissatisfied, I soon give that up." A variety of unfulfilling jobs followed as he tried to determine his future direction.

JOHN MARSDEN: No amount of money, no matter what it could be, can compensate me for the anguish, the pain, the humiliation of the past few years.
No sum will restore me in any way to the position I was in before these outrageous allegations.

TRACY BOWDEN: Six years and 6 million dollars after launching a defamation action against Channel 7, judgment day for Sydney's solicitor, John Marsden.
JOHN MARSDEN: I think I've fought a David and Goliath battle in which the fight of corporate wealth was to delay, frustrate, and if this case shows nothing it shows there is no equality before our present legal system.
