Katharine Eisaman Maus explores Renaissance writers' uneasy preoccupation with the inwardness and invisibility of truth. The perceived discrepancy between a person's outward appearance and inward disposition, she argues, deeply influenced the ways English Renaissance dramatists and poets conceived of the theater, imagined dramatic characters, and reflected upon their own creativity.

    Did Christopher Marlowe Draft the will of Katherine Benchkin? 18 September 2005 In the Kent Archives Office, in Maidstone, Kent, is an important will for students of Christopher Marlowe's life. It is the will of Katherine Benchkin of Stour Street, Canterbury, the widow of James Benchkin. According to court records, cited by Urry, in Christopher Marlowe and Canterbury , (1988) the will was read aloud by Christopher Marlowe "on a Sunday in November" in 1585. ( Appendix III PRC:1 ) The record of Marlowe's attendance supports his absence from Cambridge during this time. Urry also publishes two other wills of importance to Marlowe scholars. One of Marlowe's father, John Marlowe, and the other of Marlowe's mother, Katherine Marlowe. Both of those wills were drafted by persons who were neither a party to them or the so called testate. A "James Bissell" drafted John Marlowe's will. At the close of it, under witnesses to it, as was customary, James Bissell wrote himself into the text of the will with the phrase, "

      Christopher Marlowe (bap. 1564, d. 1593), `The Muses Darling', poet and playwright of English drama wrote Doctor Faustus. Critics and scholars alike have praised his poetic dramas and innovation of blank verse. On 26 February 1564 at St George's, Canterbury, Christopher Marlowe was baptised, the same year Shakespeare was born. His father was John Marlowe, a cobbler, his mother Katherine. Though `Marlowe' is used now, the family's name had various spellings over the years. Not a lot is known of Marlowe's childhood and there is some question as to the dates and chronology of some of his works. With his scholarly potential acknowledged, in 1578 Marlowe entered King's School, Canterbury, on scholarship from Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury to study music, religion, Latin and literature. Two years later he was off to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, on another scholarship to study philosophy and history. He graduated in 1587 with an M.A. Sir Francis Walsingham recruited him, as well as many other men of letters at the time, to become a trusted government part-time secret service agent. There are school buttery and audit records taken during his school years but little else to confirm his comings and goings, merely long absences that leave room for speculation as to his activities. Rumours suggested that he had travelled to Rheims, France as a Catholic convert but the Queen herself cleared his name in the Privy Council's letter of recommendation for his M.A. degree dated 29 June 1587;

He was christened at St. George's Church, Canterbury, on the 26th of February, 1563/4, some two months before William Shakespeare 's baptism at Stratford-on-Avon. His father, John Marlowe, is said to have been the grandson of John Morley or Marlowe, a substantial tanner of Canterbury. The father, who survived by a dozen years or so his illustrious son, married on the 22nd of May 1561 Catherine, daughter of Christopher Arthur, at one time rector of St. Peter's, Canterbury, who had been ejected by Queen Mary as a married minister. The dramatist received the rudiments of his education at the King's School, Canterbury, which he entered at Michaelmas 1578, and where he had as his fellow-pupils Richard Boyle, afterwards known as the great Earl of Cork, and Will Lyly, the brother of the dramatist
