    Marlowe, Christopher
    Marlowe, Christopher, Tamburlaine the Great (c.1587), Dr. Faustus (c.1588), The Jew of Malta (c.1589), and Edward II (c.1592). Marlowe's dramas have heroic themes, usually centering on a great personality who is destroyed by his own passion and ambition. Although filled with violence, brutality, passion, and bloodshed, Marlowe's plays are never merely sensational. The poetic beauty and dignity of his language raise them to the level of high art. Most authorities detect influences of his work in the Shakespeare canon, notably in Titus Andronicus and King Henry VI.

Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus
Background: Marlowe Christopher Marlowe, the first master of blank verse, was born in 1564, and lived for twenty nine intriguing years The son of a shoemaker, he attended Cambridge University on a scholarship from the Archbishop of Canterbury, where he earned a Bachelor's degree. The scholarship had been given with the understanding that Marlowe would become a minister, but Marlowe seems to have had other ideas. Cambridge awarded him a M.A., but only at the behest of the Queen's Privy Council, possibly as part of his compensation for espionage conducted on the continent. He then left Cambridge to write plays for the blossoming theaters of London. A member of the School of Night, along with Sir Walter Raleigh and the mathematician John Dee, Marlowe was also suspected of homosexuality and atheism, and was actually picked up and questioned about the latter just days before his death in a barroom brawlwhich itself has led to speculation about assassinationin 1593. A sampling of the words others claimed to be Marlowe's:
Them that love not tobacco and boys are fools.

CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE (1564-1593) The following article was originally published in Minute History of the Drama THERE can be no question of the genius of Christopher Marlowe, nor of the far-reaching effect of his work on English drama. He dared disregard the classical unities in favor of a natural unity which comes from centering the action around one great character or great passion. He created an English drama in place of a slavish imitation of Greek and Latin dramas. He was, perhaps, the pioneer who blazed a trail for that still greater English dramatist born the same year, William Shakespeare Christopher Marlowe was the son of a shoemaker. He studied at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1583. Before he received his master's degree in 1587, his greatest tragic drama had been presented on the stage. Before he finished college he had also done at least part of the work of translating Ovid's Amores into English verse.

Part of our British Authors section. Marlowe, Christopher (1564-1593), Born the same year as Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe was to become the first great poet of the theatre's second great age. His life, much like the lives of his characters, would be short and violent. The son of a shoemaker, Marlowe attended King's School, Canterbury and Corpus Christi College where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1584 and his Masters degree three years later. According to university records, Marlowe disappeared frequently during his last years at school, exceeding the number of absences permitted him by statute and putting his degree in jeopardy. Apparently, much of this time was spent in Rheims among the Catholics who were plotting against Queen Elizabeth's protestant regime. Because of his absences and the fact that he refused to take holy orders, the university refused, for a time, to confer his degree, but the authorities... Christopher Marlowe
Mind you, Marlowe was the son of a humble village cobbler and his attaining University was a fine, substantial step in his education. But hardly to his personal development. He was roisterous and boisterous, blasphemer, drunk, pederast and still a lyrical dramatic genius – on that dramatic side, he is often seen today as OTT (over the top). His rapid success and an either uncaring or egotistical understanding that he was indeed ‘the real bridge’ between ‘medieval and modern’ in Elizabethan terms and therefore very special, leader of the “new wave” in theatre, could have virtually unhinged anyone – hence his dark delusions leading into entrapment and employment by the Elizabeth / Walsingham secret service, and all the blind often dangerous alleys that ego fascinates us into. Though some realistically today see his Works as “over-rated”, his “life and talent were spectacular” and he is the truly professional candidate in this great Detective Story. His productive, high quality imaginative work is illustrated by his Cambridge career. From there emerged “Doctor Faustus”, a secular and metaphysical vision of a seeker after truth selling his soul to the Devil.

About the Author
Elizabethan poet, dramatist, and William Shakespeare's predecessor in English drama, whose reputation in his lifetime wasn't as good as Shakespeare's. Marlowe was killed at the age of 29 in a tavern broil by Ingram Frizer, and buried at St. Nicholas, Deptford. His dramatic career lasted only six years. And as we all know, English-born mystery writer Raymond Chandler lent Marlowe's name to his own hero Philip Marlowe. Come live with me, and be my love;

The Paper Trail
Since the early 1800s Christopher Marlowe (b.1564) has been a strong contender for the authorship of "Shakespeare's" works. The notion was first suggested by Queen Elizabeth during the wake of the Essex Rebellion, when she singled him out as the author of Richard II Two centuries later, scholars began to suspect something was peculiar when they noticed that Marlowe's works supply the "missing" early works of Shakespeare, so it was suggested, anonymously, that Marlowe might have been William's nom de plume Once Marlowe's life proved Marlowe's works his own, the theory was discarded, but once it became clear Shakespeare's biography offered no proof of his authorship (apart from the title page advertisements) the theory was revised in the reverse. This was in 1895 when an American literary sleuth, Wilbur Gleason Zeigler, first suggested that Marlowe

Marlowe's Koran-burning hero is censored to avoid Muslim anger
By Dalya Alberge, Arts Correspondent
IT WAS the surprise hit of the autumn season, selling out for its entire run and inspiring rave reviews. But now the producers of Tamburlaine the Great Audiences at the Barbican in London did not see the Koran being burnt, as Marlowe intended, because David Farr, who directed and adapted the classic play, feared that it would inflame passions in the light of the London bombings. NI_MPU('middle'); The censorship aroused condemnation yesterday from senior figures in the theatre and scholars, as well as religious leaders. • Intro Christopher Marlowe. From Chris Cleary's Middleton site. Two early contemporaries of Shakespeare experimented with Senecan tragedy: Thomas Kyd and Christopher Marlowe. Marlowe isrightlybetter known, but seems to have had less direct influence on Shakespeare. Marlowe was a controversial figure . He was born in the same year as Shakespeare, the son of a shoemaker, and graduated from Cambridge in 1584, at the age of 20.
    The mighty line
    Marlowe is best known for his brilliant Doctor Faustus, the story of a university man (like Hamlet) who sold his soul to the devil. In both Doctor Faustus and the earlier, two-part play, Tamburlaine, Marlowe created what Ben Jonson called his "mighty line." Faustus' famous lines to Helen of Troy, whom he has had Mephistophilis re-create for him, are a good example: Was this the face that launched a thousand ships And burnt the topless towers of Ilium?
