Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) Elizabethan poet, dramatist, William Shakespeare 's predecessor in English drama. Christopher Marlowe was killed at the age of 29 in a tavern broil by Ingram Frizer, and buried at St. Nicholas, Deptford. His dramatic career lasted only six years. And as we all know, the English-born mystery writer Raymond Chandler lent Marlowe's name to his own hero Philip Marlowe. Come live with me, and be my love;
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills and fields,
Woods or steepy mountain yields.

(from 'The Passionate Shepherd to His Love', c. 1589) Christopher Marlowe (Cristofer Marley in his autograph) was born in Canterbury, the son of a shoemaker. He attended the King's School and was awarded a scholarship from the foundation of Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. Marlowe studied the Bible and the Reformation theologians as well as philosophy and history at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In 1584 he took a degree of A.B. Instead of continuing in Cambridge, Marlowe left his studies to carry out a secret mission for the government. In 1587 he took the degree of M.A. University authorities, believing he had been converted to Catholicism, were first unwilling to grant his degree. It did not help him either, that he had been away too much from his studies. When the Queen's Privy Council interceded on Marlowe's behalf, the dispute was settled.

This biography was originally published in Elizabethan and Stuart Plays . Ed. Charles Read Baskerville. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1934. pp. 307-308. Edward II was entered in the Stationers' Register on July 6, 1593. The first complete edition known was printed in 1594 with the statement that the play had been acted by the Earl of Pembroke's players. The winter of 1592-93 is suggested as the date of composition by indications of maturity in the play and by the fact that Pembroke's Company was prominent in London only at that time. The source is Holinshed's Chronicles .Edward II represents a great advance over the known plays on English history that preceded, and is the best of Marlowe's work in construction, in characterization, and in sustained tone. Against a background of the fierce feudal barons, Marlowe has drawn a very effective picture of the sentimental and weak but stubborn king. Of the three (remaining) extant plays by Marlowe, the most important is The Jew of Malta , written possibly around 1590. It was being played for Henslowe early in 1592, and was entered in the Stationers' Register early in 1594. The earliest form to survive, however, is an edition by Thomas Heywood in 1633, which has clearly been revamped. The Massacre at Paris was printed without date about 1593. Dido, Queen of Carthage , printed in 1594, was written in collaboration with Thomas Nashe. It has been claimed that Marlowe had a hand in several other extant plays, particularly in the two parts of The Contention of York and Lancaster , which are versions of Shakespeare's Second and Third Parts of Henry VI .

Biography of Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593)
Christopher Marlowe Christopher Marlowe was born in 1564, the year of William Shakespeare's birth. His father worked in Canterbury, England, as a cobbler, and Christopher was one of many children to be born into their middle-class household. After attending the King's School on a scholarship, he won another scholarship to attend Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Marlowe completed his BA degree in four years and then stayed on at Cambridge to work towards an MA. Students who did so were granted an extended scholarship-and were expected to take Holy Orders. During the following three years, Marlowe began to absent himself from the college for weeks on end. Although such absences were not uncommon among BA students, Marlowe's spotty attendance seems to have earned the ire of the college administration. Rumors arose that Marlowe planned to defect to the Catholic seminary of Rheims, France. Amidst such rumors, it became a matter of the Queen's Council that Marlowe should receive his degree at graduationthe Privy Council conveyed to the college that Marlowe had been in government service. The evidence suggests that he had been serving England as a spy in Rheims. When Marlowe left Cambridge in 1587, it was to write for the stage. Before the end of the year, both parts of his

(See map...ref no. 25) On the 30th May 1593 Marlowe was killed by Ingram Frizer in a private meeting room in a house in Deptford. However, there is considerable conjecture regarding the circumstances of Marlowe's death. Some believe his death occurred accidentally as a result of a fight over an unpaid bill. Others believe he was murdered by Frizer due to his involvement in espionage. Some have even suggested his murder was faked and that Marlowe fled to France where he subsequently wrote all the plays attributed to William Shakespeare (Anthony Burgess's final novel A Dead Man in Deptford is based on these events.)

Welcome to The Marlowe Society
Christopher Marlowe as poet and playwright was at the forefront of the 16th Century dramatic renaissance, a man to whom Shakespeare and others owe a huge debt of gratitude. He also led a full and intriguing life outside the theatre. Entangled in the outer reaches of the Elizabethan espionage web, Marlowe's life is alleged to have ended prematurely in 1593 when, at just 29, he was reportedly stabbed to death in Deptford. The Objects of The Marlowe Society are to present Christopher Marlowe in his true light as a great poet and playwright, the innovator of blank verse drama; to encourage the performance of his plays; to discuss and study Elizabethan and Jacobean literature with particular attention to Marlowe's place in it; and to publish historically valid information about him based on research. Read more about the Society's policy , including its position on the Shakespearean Authorship debate.

Christopher Marlowe Born the same year as Shakespeare , Christopher Marlowe was to become the first great poet of the theatre's second great age. His life, much like the lives of his characters, would be short and violent. The son of a shoemaker, Marlowe attended King's School, Canterbury and Corpus Christi College where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1584 and his Masters degree three years later. According to university records, Marlowe disappeared frequently during his last years at school, exceeding the number of absences permitted him by statute and putting his degree in jeopardy. Apparently, much of this time was spent in Rheims among the Catholics who were plotting against Queen Elizabeth's protestant regime. Because of his absences and the fact that he refused to take holy orders, the university refused, for a time, to confer his degree, but the authorities intervened, and the degree was eventually granted. Although we cannot be certain, Marlowe may have fought in the wars in the Low Country after graduation. What we can be certain of is that he settled in London in 1587 and began his career as a playwrightalthough he may still have been in the employ of the secret service as well. The young poet plunged himself into a social circle that included such colorful literary figures as Sir Phillip Sidney and Sir Walter Raleigh. He shared a room with fellow playwright

Christopher Marlowe
Christopher Marlowe was born in Canterbury in 1564, the same year as his great rival William Shakespeare. Though his father was only a shoemaker, Marlowe was educated at King's School and awarded a scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. While at Corpus Christi he studied philosophy, history, and theology. At this point Marlowe disappeared from university, and later speculation was that he was recruited by the government for espionage work. When he returned to Cambridge, Marlowe was refused his M.A. degree due to suspected Catholic sympathies, until the Queen's Privy Council intervened on his behalf.

Christopher Marlowethe name is also spelled Marly and Marlin in the recordswas born in 1564, the son of a well-to-do shoemaker and a clergyman's daughter. He was educated at King's School in his native Canterbury and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he proceeded B.A. in 1584 and M.A. in 1587. The privy council intervened to see that his employment on some confidential mission for the government, in which he had proved "orderly and discreet," should not put him at a disadvantage in the matter of his M.A. degree. For the remaining six years of his life there is evidence of exceptional activity. Apparently he continued to serve as a confidential agent for the government; he engaged in the philosophical or theological speculation of a circle centering around Raleigh; he achieved distinction by his non-dramatic verse, of which the unfinished Hero and Leander is the most important example and he became the outstanding dramatist of London, in association chiefly with the Admiral's Company of players. Many details of his life were a source of scandal to some of his contemporaries, and for us are still shrouded in mystery. In May, 1593, a manuscript was discovered in

Christopher 'James Bond' Marlowe
Christopher Marlowe was born on 6 February 1564, the eldest son of a shoemaker. Apparently he was never really meant to follow in his father's footsteps (sorry), because he was very well educated, which, back then, meant that he could read and translate Ovid . At 23, he went off to London and became the dramatist for the theatre company owned by Lords Admiral and Strange. Dramatist was a rotten job, really , but Christopher (or Kit, as he was often called) had several outside hobbies, like talking to his friend Sir Walter Raleigh , being an athiest, and getting arrested for an 'unspecified' offense
Kit's plays include works such as The Famous Tragedy of the Rich Jew of Malta, Edward the Second , and the infamous Dr. Faustus. His most ambitious work was the heroic epic Tamburlaine the Great, a play in two parts of five acts each. This was in poem form, as all plays were then, but it has the added distinction of being the first play written in English blank verse. This may not seem terribly exciting, but bear in mind that it was Kit's pioneering use of blank verse that encouraged Shakespeare to try it . He was the first to write a genuine tragedy in English, again paving the way for Shakespeare. Kit also wrote one of the most famous lyric poems in the English language, "

    Christopher Marlowe (bap. 1564, d. 1593), `The Muses Darling', poet and playwright of English drama wrote Doctor Faustus. Critics and scholars alike have praised his poetic dramas and innovation of blank verse. On 26 February 1564 at St George's, Canterbury, Christopher Marlowe was baptised, the same year Shakespeare was born. His father was John Marlowe, a cobbler, his mother Katherine. Though `Marlowe' is used now, the family's name had various spellings over the years. Not a lot is known of Marlowe's childhood and there is some question as to the dates and chronology of some of his works. With his scholarly potential acknowledged, in 1578 Marlowe entered King's School, Canterbury, on scholarship from Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury to study music, religion, Latin and literature. Two years later he was off to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, on another scholarship to study philosophy and history. He graduated in 1587 with an M.A. Sir Francis Walsingham recruited him, as well as many other men of letters at the time, to become a trusted government part-time secret service agent. There are school buttery and audit records taken during his school years but little else to confirm his comings and goings, merely long absences that leave room for speculation as to his activities. Rumours suggested that he had travelled to Rheims, France as a Catholic convert but the Queen herself cleared his name in the Privy Council's letter of recommendation for his M.A. degree dated 29 June 1587;
