Prose English 470: Reading the Rainforests The instructor for this course is Joel Martineau . The course focuses on British Columbia's rainforests as political spaces. Indiscriminate logging has decimated British Columibia's rainforests leaving huge clearcut logging scars on the Pacific Coast Mountains. The following essays use a constructivist methodology to examine how the social construction of nature influences the power struggles concerning the use and exploitation of British Columbia's forests. The Political Economy of British Columbia's Rainforests The British Columbia government leases forests, owned collectively by citizens, to privately owned companies who log the timber for profit. Under this arrangement of private entitlements and public property, forest companies harvest vast tracts of B.C.'s forests, providing a stream of wealth for the government, forestry workers, companies and shareholders. Recently, First Nations peoples challenged the rights of these entities to B.C.'s forest wealth by reasserting their claims to aboriginal lands ostensibly owned by the government in right of the Crown. Environmental activists and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as the David Suzuki Foundation and Greenpeace, contested the type of nature the for-profit market place produces. Meanwhile, some forest industry spokespersons and analysts promote the privatization of B.C.'s forests, claiming that private property provides the correct incentives to maintain forests over the long run.

By Daphne Marlatt, Photographs by Robert Minden Ronsdale Press offers a new edition of Steveston , this much loved work by two of Canada’s finest poets and photographers. For this edition, Marlatt has written a new poem, never before published, to offer a postscript from 2001 on the original 1974 undertaking. At the publisher’s request, Minden has returned to his photographic archive bringing 9 additional images of Steveston and New Denver to light . In addition, Marlatt and Minden have rethought their decision to interleave poems and photos, and have, instead, created two separate but connected stories — poetry and pictures that evoke their own rhythms and then speak to each other of their connections. For the first time, Minden talks about their joint project of recreating Steveston

Biography Frances Sprout teaches at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo, B.C. and is currently preparing to defend her dissertation, Pictures of Mourning: The Family Photograph in Canadian Elegiac Novels at the University of Victoria. "Picturing Loss: Mourning and the Photograph in Canadian Elegiac Family Romances" This dissertation identifies and examines a previously unremarked genre in contemporary Canadian literature. This genre, which I call the elegiac family romance (combining Freud's "family romance" with Kenneth Bruffee's "elegiac romance"), presents protagonists who narrativize their lives after the death of a parent. I focus on a recurrent trope within this genre: the ekphrasis (described by James Heffernan as "the verbal representation of a visual representation") of the family photograph. I argue that in the context of parental death, this trope emphasizes the renegotiation of subjectivity at a moment of generational transition, with particular emphasis on representation. As well, I argue, in simultaneously conforming to and transcending elegiac linearity, the trope demonstrates the hegemonic power of inherited family narratives while offering possibilities for transmuting them. Besides its recourse to genre theory, this interdisciplinary study moves between theories of subjectivity and representation, visuality and the photograph, mourning and memory. Vancouver Books
A lot of books have been written about Vancouver and its environs. This file, started in March 2007, is intended to describe many of them. Our thanks and gratitude to Karen Cannon of the Friends of the Vancouver Public Library for her terrific (and ongoing) work on this project. In 1999 the Vancouver Public Library produced a poster titled Vancouver in Print: 100 Books from a Century Past . These books—intended to give a broad view of the many kinds of books published about the city—are indicated below with the legend: VIP . It was this list of titles that began this feature. Many hundreds of other books will be added to this page as time goes on. Inquiries about any of them can be made at any branch of the Vancouver Public Library. Not all these titles are available at VPL. Some are in the UBC Library system, and some at Vancouver City Archives. And for a superb and thorough listing of all books about British Columbia and by British Columbians, we recommend a visit to:

The speaking object: Daphne Marlatt's pronouns and lesbian poetics - Second-Person Narrative
Style Fall, 1994 by Keith Green Jill LeBihan 1. INTRODUCTION The discussion of much recent feminist theory is centered on what might be meant by a woman as subject in discourse when that discourse is ordered by "phallogocentric" power. The question revolves around how a woman might represent herself within a symbolic structure and how she might do this as an active subject or agent. One of the precepts of some feminisms is that relationships between mothers and daughters, between women as lovers and as friends, and between women academics require representation in ways that conventional linguistic systems do not offer. Canadian writer Daphne Marlatt attempts to articulate a new kind of subjectivity for women in her poetics and in her subversive text ana historic (1988). We examine here both the demands for alternatives to phallogocentric language from the ecriture feminine and the ways in which Marlatt herself gives voice to the relationships between women by creating a nonexclusive pronominal system.
