Repository: Creator: New American Poetry Circuit. Title: New American Poetry Circuit Records. Dates: Extent: 1 linear foot. Record Series: Language English. Abstract:
History:
A cooperative organized to arrange and promote poetry readings for its registered poets in universities and colleges; founded and directed by Jeanetta L. Jones from an office in Berkeley, California. The idea of the cooperative was mooted by Jeanetta Jones through her correspondence with Clayton Eshleman. Both of them were poets, though Eshleman already had a following and had produced some anthology collections. Ms. Jones sent out brochures that contained biographical data of the poets to all prospective clients throughout the country. Members included: D. Alexander, David Antin, Harvey Bialy, Paul Blackburn, Victor Coleman, Ed Dorn, Theodore Enslin, Clayton Eshleman, Larry Goodell, Jack Hirschman, Anselm Hollo, Kenneth Irby, Robert Kelly, Phillip Lamantia, Jack MacLow, Michael McClure, Daphne Marlatt, David Meltzer, Jerome Rothenberg, Armand Schwerner, Charles Stei, and Diane Wakoski. • Daphne Marlatt 1942-
(Full name Daphne Buckle Marlatt) Australian-born Canadian poet, novelist, critic, and editor. The following entry presents an overview of Marlatt's career through 2000.
    INTRODUCTION
Distinguished as a daring experimentalist and one of Canada's leading feminist writers, Marlatt has created a complex, multifaceted literary style aimed at dissecting gender politics and male-biased histories. In such volumes of poetry as What Matters: Writing 1968-1970 (1980) and Touch to My Tongue (1984), and in her historical novel, Ana Historic (1988), Marlatt employs sophisticated poststructuralist techniques to unmask and subvert patriarchal linguistic hierarchies that have traditionally silenced the voice of women in literature. Marlatt is also a noted critic; her collection of essays, Readings from the Labyrinth (1998), placed her at the forefront of feminist theory and established her as a leading historian of feminist thought in Canada. Marlatt's aesthetic approach, while intensely personal and sensuous, is lauded for both its academic rigor and its avoidance of concrete, binary paradigms, allowing her readers to find their own meanings in her work.

Canadian Feminist Writing and American Poetry
    3. This late twentieth-century avant-garde challenges dominant modes of writing espousing the expressive theory of language. In the United States language poetry emerged as both a reaction to and an outgrowth of the "New American Poetry" as embodied by Black Mountain, the New York School, and Beat aesthetics (in the mid 1970s). Within the pages of little magazines like Tottle's This Hills , and the Tuumba chapbook series, writers such as Charles Bernstein, Bruce Andrews, Bob Perelman, Ron Silliman, or Barrett Watten developed modes of writing that implicitly criticized the bardic, personalist impulses of the 1960s and focused attention on the material of language itself. This practice was supplemented by essays in poetics published in journals such as L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Open Space Paper Air Poetics Journal The Difficulties O.blek

February 14 daphne marlatt and Robert Minden. Steveston (1974). daphne marlatt. with daphne marlatt and George Bowering” (1982, 1985)
    http://www.carleton.ca/english/undergraduate/courses/docs/ENGL4806D.htm
About the course: This course will examine the rise of the postmodern Canadian long poem in English from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. In addition to examining the form as foundational to Canadian Literature, we will immerse ourselves in the specific political and cultural contexts of the 1970s, questioning the use and problematical natures of traditional narratives, lyrics, language, identity politics, multiculturalism, and citizenship. A selection of essays and poetics will complement our reading of book-length poems from the period, allowing us to consider a number of sustained poetic voices often neglected in academic courses in favour of brief, incidental samples form Canada’s poetic traditions.
    Required Texts:
Rather than working entirely from an anthology that would excise sections of long poems, the course is organized around reading a selection of entire long poems in book form. These texts will be supplemented and complemented by secondary readings available in a course pack. All texts are available at Octopus Books, just West of Third Avenue and Bank Street We will read roughly one book of poetry for each week of the course.
