  • German writer Thomas Mann was born in L¼beck, Germany, in 1875 and died in Kilchberg, near Zurich, Switzerland, in 1955. He settled in Munich with his family after the death of his father, remaining until 1936; he then went into exile in the United States. His life and work were dominated by two major questions: Germany and German identity; the status of the artist and art in society. Concerning the question of German identity, Mann began by holding conservative, monarchist, and militarist beliefs until the rise of Nazism. He opposed a Germanic ideal that accepted values held by the rest of Europe. In this he distanced himself from the position of his brother Heinrich Mann, a republican, cosmopolitan, and critic of the Empire. During this time, Mann's literary output began with a lengthy autobiographical novel, Buddenbrooks (1901), in which he describes the decline of four generations of a rich Hanseatic family. The fate...

German writer Thomas Mann. German novelist and critic. A largely subjective artist, he drew his themes from his own experiences and inner thoughts. He was constantly preoccupied with the idea of death in the midst of life and with the position of the artist in relation to society. His first novel was Buddenbrooks (1901), a saga of a merchant family which traces through four generations the gradual growth of decay as culture slowly saps virility. Magic Mountain Mann . He worked in an insurance office in Munich and became a reader on the staff of the periodical Simplicissimus , in which some of his stories were published. His opposition to the Nazi regime forced him to leave Germany and in 1940 he became a US citizen, but he returned to Europe in 1954. Among his other works are a biblical tetralogy Tristan (1905), a dramatic dialogue. In 1905 he got married and

    Mann and his musical demons
Thomas Mann was all too aware of the ties between music and Nazi ideology, writes Wolfgang Schneider
Thomas Mann is considered the most music-obsessed author in the history of literature. His powers of description were at their best when he was writing about music. But professional musicians have constantly objected to his statements on music. How to explain that?
For this author, music, romantic music in particular, is the " magician of souls " - but possibly with very dark results. The argumentative key of "Dr. Faustus" lies in the claim that Germany did not descend the path into National Socialist barbarianism "in contradiction" to its classical music culture but rather in evocation of it. And not only because Adolf Hitler was a fanatic music-lover and Wagner fan.

The Collection of German Literature by Christa Sammons The Collection of German Literature, one of the oldest special collections at Yale, contains first editions and other rare literary texts in German from approximately 1600 to 1850, with scattered holdings of earlier authors and a few specialized gatherings of twentieth-century material. The areas of greatest strength are the seventeenth century and Goethe. Like many library collections at Yale, the origins of the German Literature Collection reach back into the history of the university. In the late decades of the nineteenth century, German book collecting was encouraged by Yale officers and faculty who had received their graduate education in Germany. Alfred Lawrence Ripley, 1878, for example, who taught German at Yale after studying in Berlin and Bonn, took particular interest in the library during his thirty-four years as a fellow of the Yale Corporation. University librarian John Christopher Schwab, 1886, grandson of the German author Gustav Schwab, encouraged several programs to increase Yale's German holdings. Given this atmosphere, it is not surprising that Yale sought out William A. Speck, a German-American pharmacist from Haverstraw, New York, who by 1913 had amassed the largest private Goethe library outside Germany. The collection was acquired for Yale, and Speck served as its curator for the rest of his life, adding books and manuscripts with funds provided largely by the university. When he died in 1928, the Speck Collection had tripled in size to embrace some 20,000 books and as many prints, manuscripts, broadsides, and miscellaneous materials.
