page: One of Germany's greatest twentieth-century authors, Thomas Mann encoded his own homosexuality in his novels but thought that homosexuality led to the destruction of social institutions and the death of the individual homosexual. Winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize for literature, Mann bridges nineteenth-century realist fiction and the twentieth-century modernist style in his novels, short stories, and essays. Sponsor Message.
His mother, Julia da Silva-Bruhus, was the daughter of a German businessman and a Brazilian mother. Through her, Thomas became interested in music, literature, and art, which, because of his mother's parentage, Mann always associated with Southern cultures and climates. His pragmatism and work ethic derived from the Northern influence of his father, he believed. When his father died in 1891, at the age of fifty-one, the family business was sold. His father had realized neither Thomas nor his older brother Heinrich would become his successor, as both had shown more interest in literature than in business.

Some Quotations About Phrenology
  • Phrenology is a true science. Step by step the result of observation upon the connection between development and function. In the coming century, Phrenology will assuredly attain general importance. It will prove itself to be the true science of mind. Its practical uses in education, in self-discipline, in the reformatory treatment of criminals and in the remedial treatment of the insane will give it one of the highest places in the hierarchy of the sciences.

  • - - - A. R. WALLACE, LL.D., F.R.S., O.M., "The Wonderful Century"
  • I never knew I had an inventive talent until Phrenology told me so. I was a stranger to myself until then!

  • - - -Thomas Alva EDISON
  • I look upon Phrenology as the guide to philosophy and the handmaid of Christianity. Whoever disseminates true Phrenology is a public benefactor.

  • - - -Horace MANN
  • The caracteriological diagnosis is a joy and a power throughout life

  • - - - Prof. Paul BOUTS
  • Phrenology is always criticised by those who never studied the science, using rather obscure reasonings and aprioristic statements

Mann, Thomas
Mann, Thomas (1875-1955), self-exiled German novelist and winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature, lived in Princeton for two and a half years 1938-1941, and was formally associated with the University during the academic years 1938-1940. Mann had left Germany in 1933 when Hitler rose to power. After five years in Switzerland he was encouraged by friends to settle in this country, and President Dodds and Dean Gauss persuaded him to accept appointment as a lecturer in the University. While here Mann gave public lectures on Goethe, Wagner, and Freud and guest lectures in upperclass courses on the German romantic movement and the European novel. The University made him a Doctor of Letters honoris causa at a special convocation in Nassau Hall in May 1939. In a moving response Mann expressed gratitude for his new home in America and spoke of gratitude in general: ``To be grateful for all life's blessings, . . . is the best condition for a happy life. A joke, a good meal, a fine spring day, a work of art, a human personality, a voice, a glance but this is not all. For there is another kind of gratitude . . . the feeling that makes us thankful for suffering, for the hard and heavy things of life, for the deepening of our natures which perhaps only suffering can bring.'' During their stay in Princeton Mr. and Mrs. Mann lived in the red brick Georgian house at the corner of Stockton Street and Library Place. Here, working three or four hours every morning, seven days a week, he completed

MANN, THOMAS (1856-1941), trade unionist and socialist, was born on 15 April 1856 at Foleshill, Warwickshire, England, son of Thomas Mann, bookkeeper, and his wife Mary Ann, n©e Grant. After three years schooling he began work at 10 in the claustrophobic underground passages of the Victoria Colliery. His only positive memories of childhood were of weekly church and Sunday-school attendance. In 1870 the family moved to Birmingham where he completed an engineering apprenticeship and embraced self-improvement, temperance and radicalism, while intensifying his religious commitment. In 1877 Mann left Birmingham for London and, arriving during the 'great depression', experienced unemployment, poverty and loneliness. On 2 October 1879 he married Ellen Edwards. Finding regular work at his trade in the early 1880s, he began his career as a labour activist, his growing involvement with unionism, socialism and political action reflected in his membership of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers (1881), the Social Democratic Federation (1885), and the Independent Labour Party of which he was secretary in 1894-97. He was an ardent eight-hours advocate, and his pamphlet

Summary by Michael McGoodwin, prepared 1997 Acknowledgement : This work has been summarized using the Knopf/Vintage 1994 edition translated by John E. Woods. Quotations are for the most part taken from that work, as are paraphrases of its commentary. Overall impression : This is a long and detailed story of a family undergoing a rather relentless decline which I found too pessimistic. Notes from Encarta : Thomas Mann was a German novelist and critic, one of the most important figures in early 20th-century literature, whose novels explore the relationship between the exceptional individual and his or her environment, either the environment of family or of the world in general.
JB3 and Elisabeth née Kröger have daughter Clara in 1838. Tony visits her wealthy grandparents (the Lebrecht Krögers) and repulses the crude advances of Hermann Hagenström, thereby losing her friendship with Julie H. In 1841, JB2 and later his wife Antoinette die and Gotthold receives a cash settlement. Consul JB3 takes over the business and constantly worries about the cash flow. Christian courts a theater woman regarded as a courtesan. Tony is sent to Therese ("Sesame") Weichbrodt's boarding school, where she befriends Armgard von Schilling (an aristocrat from Mecklenburg), Gerda Arnoldsen (who plays the violin and is from Amsterdam), and Eva Ewers (now from Munich).
