  • Although during his lifetime the reputation of Osip Emilievich Mandelstam (muhn-dyihl-SHTAHM) was subject to attack that was later, for some time, followed by official silence and suppression of his works in his native country, his stature as a leading Russian poet of the twentieth century subsequently came to be acknowledged by many writers and specialists. Mandelstam’s father, Emil Veniaminovich Mandelstam, was a leather merchant, and his mother was a pianist and came from a family that included members of the intelligentsia. A problematical attitude toward his Jewish background was... [The entire page is 1565 words long]

    Happy Birthday, Osip Mandelstam!
It is sobering to pause from time to time and remember the poets who wrote out of true necessity, and at great personal risk.
Born on January 15, 1891 in Warsaw, Osip Manelstam grew up in Saint Petersburg and travelled widely as a young man. His books include Stone (1913) and Tristia (1922), a book of essays, On Poetry (1928), and his Collected Poems (1928). Among Russian poets, Mandelstam was associated with the Acmeist movment. Following the publication of poems critical of Stalin, he was arrested in 1934 and sentenced to internal exile in the Eastern Urals. After his release in 1937, he was rearrested in 1938 and sentenced to five years hard labor in Siberia. He died in a transit camp near Vladivostok on December 27, 1938.

    EARTH POEMS
EARTH POEMS was published by HarperSanFrancisco in 1996.
It represented a re-working of THE GREEN BOOK OF POETRY for a more contemporary American market. Eighty new poems were included.
The book's theme is the destruction of nature by corporations and governments at the behest of a consumerist society. The book was discontinued after selling eight thousand copies in three months: no satisfactory reason given. SOME EXCERPTS FROM 'EARTH POEMS': Li Po was so venerated during his life that the emperor would personally season his soup. But he too needed the company of nature, and he spent most of his life wandering.
    Summer in the mountains
Too lazy to shift my white feather fan
I lie naked in the green woods.
Hanging my hat on a rock,
I bare my head to the breeze in the pines.
    Silent Night
Moonlight floods the end of my bed.
    I wonder, has frost fallen?
Sitting up, I look at the moon.
Lying back, I think of home.

Osip Mandelshtam (1891- 1938), one of the three great Acmeist poets, wrote verse distinguished by classical restraint, majestic conciseness, and sonority. Much of his early poetry is embodied in his two collections Stone (1913) and Tristina (1922). Arrested in 1934, he was exiled first to the Ural region and then to Voronezh. In 1938 he was rearrested, sentenced to forced labour, and died in harrowing circumstances in Vladivostok.

Russian poet and critic. He published his first poems in 1910. A leader of the Acmeist poets, who rejected the mysticism and abstraction of Russian Symbolism, he wrote intellectually demanding, apolitical verse in such volumes as Tristia (1922). In 1934 he was arrested for an epigram about Joseph Stalin . While suffering from mental illness, he composed the Voronezh Notebooks , which contain some of his finest lyrics. Arrested again in 1938, he died in custody at age 47. Most of his works went unpublished in the Soviet Union until after Stalin's death, and he was almost unknown to generations of Russians and in other countries until the mid 1960s. document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Osip Mandelshtam" from the 32 Volume Mandelshtam, Osip Emilyevich - major Russian poet and literary critic.
