Osip Mandelstam Tristia Osip Mandelstam translated by Bruce McClelland Tristia is the book that firmly established Mandelstam as a major Russian poet. This first complete and bilingual edition reproduces the original Petrograd text of 1922. His second book, Tristia marks the beginning of the poet's maturity and the culmination of his involvement with the innovative group, the Acmeists. As translator Bruce McClelland writes in the Preface: "The poems of Tristia comprise the acme of Acmeism, which in turn became a literary philosophy whose concerns resonate with many issues in contemporary poetic discourse." For while Mandelstan lived comfortably with "the strictness of self-imposed forms," at the same time he certainly did not simply "adjust" to reality. Rather he invested poetry with such a high degree of substantiality that for him (and for us) it was capable of penetrating reality breaking the glass of illusion in a way that all the theosophical incantations of the Symbolists never could. Because the Acmeists (like the American Imagists) broke with exhausted conventions and vague mysticism, Mandelstam is sometimes mistaken for a chilly realist. On the contrary, like several generations of American poets he sought to rescue the visionary in the actual, through a poetics of immediacy and the renewal of language itself. McClelland's translations aim to show us a way into this less appreciated dimension of Mandelstam and the urge for a new poetics. Cover Price

Home About Petropolis Reviews Bio ... Site map You were a painter before you were a writer but words, you've said, started to take over your canvases. Can you tell me more about that? When I came to the U.S., most of my past - my experiences, my memories, and the Russian language itself, the only language I spoke at that time - suddenly stopped being a part of my everyday life. I began to feel as if I was living split in two. One part of me was mutely poking around Phoenix, Arizona, basically surviving. My family had come to the Arizona without an immigration status, without any money and with about 20 English words between the four of us. Because of this, my early years in the U.S. yielded many experiences that rivaled my Soviet childhood in their absurdity. Meanwhile, I admired Repin and Surikov Serov and Vrubel - Russian artists barely known in the West. I had a head full of Bulgakov and Pasternak, Mandelstam and Brodsky. I also knew how to bribe an HR manager with cognak, I knew that a pioneer scarf melts on contact with a hot frying pan, I knew how to fit a bicycle into a coffin-sized Soviet elevator, and how Moscow pedestrian underpasses smell in July. All these, and a myriad other formerly real things calcified inside my mind into a kind of dormant lump, a private culture that I had no choice but to lug around with me because it made me who I was. I felt like an alien with a suitcase full of stories. All these stories invaded my paintings and nearly destroyed them. I have always been sheepish about writing, but I felt a certain license to use it inside a painting. Since text was only a visual element, I was less terrified of potential linguistic slip-ups and embarrassments in English, or, when it came to Russian, of writing something trite. With all these stories to tell, I wanted my paintings to be explicit and epic, like novels. I wanted them to contain and explain my two distinct identities, and I couldn't stand any ambiguity. So I began using more and more text and symbols in my paintings, cramming every corner of the canvas with literal meaning.

One poem is translated twice, another thrice, a third five times by five different hands. This points up Bernstein’s “must necessarily become elusive” and his “triangulated grasp of the complex outlines”. The early poems go well and are admirable. With 1931, the first doubling. Mandelstam contemplates Siberia, and between Fridman and Halberstadt a good idea of his plight is obtained. Probstein gives “Impressionism” cleanly, Gritsman’s “Old Crimea” lacks a note or two. Some of the “Octaves” later. “I live among high-minded vegetable gardens” is like a scene from David Lean’s Doctor Zhivago . Now the trio of wintry desolation again unfolds the meaning of Mandelstam’s eight lines. The quintuplet of translations on the bare plain in winter and the poet’s heroism bespeaks a certain form of discretion, as in another way (after the following spring poem) Bernstein’s treatment of the last poem, gliding over the oxymorons of satire and the deeper contradiction of the second, final stanza.
