Joho the Blog
An Entry from the Archives
I know it's your day, but... Back to Blog Steve Garfield's mom on blogging December 26, 2006 David Mamet: Too smart for his characters Good lord I'm tired of David Mamet Last night, we rented Edmond because I'd read that it was a taut, twisty, noir-ish thriller that didn't suffer from the flaws of later Mamet. Or at least that's what dripped into my brain pan from some reviews I read. Wrong. As usual, his characters speak in an unnatural rhythm, repeating endlessly. They are all little people struggling with the author's big ideas, but the author thinks his characters are too little to be having ideas as big as his, so invents a form of speech uttered by no actual people ever. As the anti-hero, William H. Macy, moves through his existential (= inexplicable) crisis, we learn that nothing motivates him except the scriptwriter's desire to be deep. As for the acting, it was hard to tell if it sucked because of the direction or because the script is impossible to speak convincingly. It was painful to watch good actors (and Denise Richards) stuck with those words to say. Glengarry Glen Ross Glengarry Glen Ross has one great role in it (the boss, played by Alec Baldwin in the movie) and a whole bunch of great actors struggling to escape the didactic machine.

Some Thoughts
superstition
Ancestor Worship
is illusion Similarly, it is the juxtaposition in the mind of the audience between the spoken word of the author and the simple directed-but-uninflected action of the actor which creates the ineluctable idea of character in the mind of the audience.
A Generation That Would Like to Stay in School
Formal education for an actor is harmful. The audience will teach you how to act and the audience will teach you how to write and to direct. The classroom will teach you how to obey, and obediance in the theatre will get you nowhere. If you want to be in the theatre, go into the theatre. If you want to have made a valiant effort to go into the theatre before you go into real estate or law school or marry wealth, then perhaps you should stay in school. pretend
Scholarship
Scholarship and The Method encourage you to study and supply the effect one wants to have on the audience. Our effect is not for us to know. It is not in our control. Only our intention is under our control. As we strive to make our intentions pure, devoid of the desire to manipulate, and clear, directed to a concrete, easily stated end, our performances become pure and clear.

Nathan Lane in "November" by David Mamet
I attended a preview performance of "November," a new comedy by David Mamet, directed by Joe Mantello, starring Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf and Dylan Baker, at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on Broadway. The production officially opens this Thursday, January 17. Between Mamet (who acknowledges collaboration on this effort by Michael Nichols and Ethan Phillips) and Mantello, one expects something pretty substantial. But this really isn't... It is two hours of shtick. Uproariously funny at many points and never less than amusing, but not for anybody who is offended by a stream of profanity emanating from the stage. They seem to have taken their cue on presidential vocabulary from the Nixon White House tapes.... The audience was frequently in hysterics, although a few offended-looking folks left at intermission. The division into two acts is a bit clumsy, with the first act about twice as long as the second. It's hard to predict how the critics will rate this, but if audience reaction is any indication, it should be a big hit. I was much amused most of the time, but did find my attention wandering toward the end of the overly-long first act. Maybe by Thursday they will have found a few small things to cut....
