Nathan Lane in David Mamet's November Posted Dec 23rd 2007 11:13PM by Brian Alvey Niki is a big Nathan Lane fan so for Christmas I got us tickets to the matinee performance of November on Saturday, plus the all-important baby-sitter. November is a new play by David Mamet about a first-term U.S. president who is guaranteed to lose his upcoming re-election bid. He has messed up the country pretty badly and is being advised to just take his remaining campaign money and go away quietly. Mamet also wrote Glengarry Glen Ross and Wag The Dog , among many other things. We saw Nathan Lane three times in The Producers , once in the revival of The Odd Couple and once in Butley . He is always amazing and Niki and I are really big fans of his. So this was planned as a Christmas present for Niki, but we got a surprise bonus present for Jack. Although Laurie Metcalf (a.k.a., Roseanne's sister) is listed after Nathan Lane in the billing, Dylan Baker spends more time on the stage as the President's advisor. Baker played Dr. Curtis Connors in the Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 movies and is rumored to be signed for one more film so he can become The Lizard in Spider-Man 4.

CUMBERLAND - New Embassy Theatre's 2008 season is in development, along with early spring events.
Subscription tickets are now on sale for six visits in single or multiple-use capacity, a savings of one essentially free ticket for regularly scheduled fare in the restored 1931 Art Deco movie house at 49 Baltimore St.
In consideration for March's supper theater calendar slot is David Mamet's two-character classic "A Life in the Theatre" to star David Garwood and David Gilbert of the Johnstown, Pa., area. The quick-witted comic drama features vignettes in a relational conflict engendered by a pair of actors from different generations, and offers insights into the thespian psyche.
A Third Annual One-Act Play Festival is planned to open the regular subscription season in mid-April. David Ives' award-winning "Words, Words, Words" from Off-Broadway's "All in The Timing" will feature Kim Rowley, Danny Durr and Adam Campbell. Another single-act drama to accompany the chimpanzee comedy will be announced.
May's offering is a tour de force performance for Marta Fiscus in the Obie Award-winning "Full Gallop" by Mark Hampton and Mary Louise Wilson. The play features fashion doyenne Diana Vreeland's singular analysis of herself as fallen editor of Harper's Bazaar amid her travails in an oddly patriarchal clothing industry in a fast-moving comic drama in the genre of one-person plays like "Tru" and "Shirley Valentine."

David Mamet Interview
with Hank Nuwer
Title: A Life in the Theatre (Previously published in full in the South Carolina Review and Rendezvousing with Contemporary Writers by Hank Nuwer). Quotations used in a profile of Mamet by Nuwer originally published in Ozark an airline in-flight magazine.
Place of interview: Chicago
Year of interview: 1984.

David Mamet (photo circa 1983 or 1984); Photo of Mamet supplied kindly by David Mamet and photographer Brigitte Lacombe in 1985.
Interviewed at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, David Mamet strikes his interviewer as athletic, energetic and a lover of debate and snappy one-liners. Mamet grabs the $6 check for tea. Hank Nuwer: A memorable line from your play The Water Engine states, "The Mind of man is less perturbed by a mystery it cannot explain than by an explanation it cannot understand." Would you say that your plays deepen the mysteries of life? David Mamet: I don't think so. I think the purpose of theater is not to deepen the mysteries of life but to celebrate the mysteries of life. That's what a good play does, and that's what a good play has done for ten thousand years. Hank Nuwer: Your purpose is not to try to explain the mysteries?

The Old Neighborhood
with playwright David Mamet The Old Neighborhood are seven years apart. The Disappearance of the Jews Jolly and D. M: I have no idea. I just came across it, and I don't really know anything more than that. H: You came across the Disappearance of the Jews , and you decided to explore further Bobby's attempt to return home? M: That's right. H: And you put the three plays together in one evening because you thought they established a dialogue among each other? M: I think so. H: You have said many times in many different contexts that drama is the quest of the protagonist for a single goal. What is Bobby Gould's goal in The Old Neighborhood M: He's attempting to close out some unfinished business. H: And what would that unfinished business be? M: Well if I tell you, then you're going to tell the subscribers, and they're not going to come to the theater. H: Although they both try, neither Bob Gold in Homicide nor Bobby Gould in The Old Neighborhood seems to be able to find any kind of meaningful way to be Jewish in the United States although they both try. Why do they fail?

Biography
Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet is the author of some of the best-known and most important plays in American theater, including American Buffalo Glengarry Glen Ross (1982), and Speed-the-Plow (1985). Born in 1947, Mamet grew up in a small Jewish neighborhood on the south side of Chicago and his plays often concern the everyday dramas of urban, working class people—the small-time con artist, the cutthroat salesman, the ingenious factory worker. He attributes his ear for dialogue to listening to his father talk and to several years of piano lessons, which gave him a feel for the musicality in speech. "Mamet deserves recognition for his careful, gorgeous, loving sense of language," writes The Village Voice. "He has the most acute ear for dialogue of any American writer since J. D. Salinger."
Mamet has also written numerous screenplays, including

David Mamet: "Throw Out Stuff You Love"
I'm a long time fan of writer and playwright David Mamet . His films stand out for their stylized, pithy dialog and intricate plot twists. Glengarry Glen Ross (winner of the Pulitzer prize) is a classic. If you've never seen House of Games, Things Change, Heist, Wag the Dog, Oleanna, or The Spanish Prisoner , you should rent their DVDs. Mamet was interviewed recently by Robert Hughes in the WSJ . Several of his answers dealt with his own creative process. WSJ: How hard is plot for you? Mamet: I once worked for a summer laying sod. This is the only thing I've ever done that was harder than that. You've got to get over your own cleverness. You have to become extraordinary analytical, and throw out all the stuff you love to get there. Sometimes it doesn't make sense. You stare at that sheet of paper for years and know there's something hiding in there. WSJ: When you begin writing, do you have an idea where it's going to go? Mamet: You've got to get in there and start mucking around. After a while the material is going to correct you. You have to listen to it, and extract the play that is hiding in your subconscious. If it can't trick you, it can't trick the audience. You have to follow your unconscious thoughts so that eventually you're encased in a structure that, as Aristotle says, is surprising and inevitable. WSJ: Are you ruthless with your own rewriting?
