What Is A "Monday Morning Clacker"?
Monday Morning is taken from the expression " Monday Morning Quarterback" - we try to remind ourselves not to take ourselves too seriously around here. Clacker is taken from the Cowboy Governor, who has declared his disgust with Washington DC " Clackers " (read: Press).

Filed under: Action Drama Sports Sony Classics ... Images So to start with, I can't say I'm all that jazzed about watching a movie about Ju-Jitsu, but this is one directed by the master of snappy dialog David Mamet and so that definitely helped raised my enthusiasm level. ComingSoon.net now has two new exclusive photos from Mamet's sports-drama, Redbelt . News of the film hit last April, when Monika gave us the heads up that Chiwetel Ejiofor had been signed for the lead. Not long after that, Patrick gave us the word that Tim Allen that's right, Mr. Toolman Taylor himself, was set to play the spoiled movie star Chet Frank. Rounding out the cast is martial arts master Randy Couture Joe Mantegna Rodrigo Santoro , and Emily Mortimer . The first image was released in August and these latest hi-res photos give us the chance to see Mamet at work on set.
Mamet wrote and directed the story, which centers on Mike Terry (played by Ejiofor); the chief instructor at the Southside Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Having shunned the spotlight of competition fighting, everything changes when, "At his brother-in-law's club one evening, Mike saves a famous action star, Chet Frank, (Tim Allen) from a severe beating. His defense of Frank leads to a job in the film industry, but other events conspire to force Mike to participate in a prize fight. An American samurai film set in the world of mixed martial arts

David Mamet's Playblogging Experiment
Seriously, does everybody in the world have to be blogging? Pulitzer-winning playwright David Mamet will blog as the character from his latest play, November , for the duration of its run. Charles H.P. Smith is played by Nathan Lane and is a president in danger of not getting re-elected. So far, he has blogged exactly three Andy Rooney-ish observations such as, "The best that [stem cell] research could accomplish would be to prolong the lives of people who were going to die anyway. Is it worth the aggravation?" One might ask the same question of this promotional blog. [ NYT 12:44 PM ON MON JAN 14 2008

Without the cavalcade of forbidden words and a lingering hope of subversive surprise, there is almost nothing that would identify "November" as the work of David Mamet.
Mamet, whose script for "Wag the Dog" may be the most prescient piece of politically subversive comedy to ever make it to the screen, takes the lazy way out with the election-year sitcom that opened last night at the Barrymore Theatre, starring Nathan Lane as a lowlife losing president called Chuck.

Instead of wit and fury, we get gags and grimaces. Instead of humor so daring that critics have been known to bite their own lips to maintain decorum, the comedy is so eager-to-please that we strain to hear Mamet's voice beyond the punch lines.

Photographs by Brigitte Lacombe W hen the star of The Producers decides to play a U.S. president in a Broadway play written by David Mamet ( November , opening January 17), is it any wonder he becomes a desperate con man? Mamet, whose last play was the 2005 courtroom farce Romance , deliberately got this new comedy up as early in the primary season as possible. But Nathan Lane’s president, Charles H.P. Smith—a cash-poor incumbent on the verge of losing reelection—looks a lot more like a certain lame duck than like any of the current White House contenders. And Smith is in a venal class all his own, deploring the job as “too much stress, too little opportunity for theft,” and lighting on the annual Thanksgiving-turkey pardon as a potential fund-raising scheme. Mamet may not have expected the primary season’s latest surprises, along with all the expressions of hope (Change! Change! Change!) that make scandal-a-minute 2006 (amply referenced in November

David Mamet
We Americans love nicknames and acronyms.
I think this is rather charming.
My other people, the Jews, do too. Maimonides, the medieval scholar, was, in Hebrew, Rabbi Moishe Ben Maimon, or the RamBam. Israel Bal Shem Tov is known as the BESHT.
We Jews treasure the secret names of things, those things we hug to ourselves. As we Americans do. We award those we love with the secret name. The Yankee Clipper, the Sultan of Swat, Ray BoomBoom Mancini, Elvis The King.
We also know the habit of awe.
All new parents automatically and universally refer to "The Young One," "The Little One," "You-Know-Who." This is an attempt to distract or subvert the evil eye, a force so powerful it need not be named.
Similarly, we, for the last decades, have referred to our Presidents by their trilateral initials. This is at once an expression of awe and an attempt to co-opt the terrible through familiarity. We were told (it seems it was a fabricated story, but it was a good one) that the Republicans, on taking the White House, found that all the computers had had their "w's" removed. Mythologically, this is priceless: the losers attempt to weaken the victor through removal of his most distinctive trait.
Awards ceremonies now each have to possess a self-awarded diminutive. The Oscars, the Emmys, et cetera. This phenomenon, we are told, began historically when Bette Davis looked at the statue of the Motion Picture Academy and thought its derriere looked like that of a friend of hers named Oscar.

BY JULIA WARD
INT. TALKING HEAD—DAY STANLEY: The office smells vaguely of shit. It gets so you don't mind. That's the worst of it. You know how long I've been here? Too long. When you die you're going to regret the things you didn't do. You think you're a pervert? I'm going to tell you something. We're all perverts. You're a thief. So be it. Befuddled by corporate morality? Shut it out. You think you're going to hell? Too late. Hell exists on earth. Here. At Dunder-Mifflin.
INT. MICHAEL'S OFFICE—DAY DWIGHT: I pitched those cocksuckers in Allentown. They wouldn't buy. They wouldn't buy a paper clip. They're dead. I want new leads, Michael. I want leads that didn't come out of the phone book. MICHAEL: I can't do it. Money's tight. You know how much those leads cost. DWIGHT: I need my balls back. My girlfriend, she's ... I can get hot. You know that.

WINNIPEG Could a man who throws around @#$%ing expletives like Ozzy Osbourne with Tourette's really be an appropriate subject for Manitoba Theatre Centre's eighth annual Master Playwright Festival? You bet your bleep he can. After all, this is David @#$%ing Mamet we're talking about. Sure, the renowned playwright, screenwriter, author and director's scripts often boast more F-bombs than the average episode of Deadwood. But like an episode of Deadwood, all that cussin' has a point. Case in point? Glengarry Glen Ross, a behind-the-scenes look at a group of male realtors who drop the four-letter word 138 times during the story. But the Pulitzer Prize-winning play which was adapted into an Oscar-nominated flick starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin and Kevin Spacey in 1992 is exactly the thing that's made Mamet such a hit among blue-collar factory workers and arty theatre buffs alike. "The obscenity is how people really talk at least in some circles," says Ira Nadel, a University of British Columbia English professor whose biography David Mamet, A Life in the Theatre, hits bookstores next month. "This is a guy who would go off and play poker all night with a bunch of ex-cons."
