He writes for children as well as adults and has taught at his alma mater, Goddard, at the Yale Drama School and New York University and at the Atlantic Theater's school which he helped to found. He was born in Chicago on November 30, 1947 into a troubled family, with the parents divorcing when Mamet and his sisters were children. The residues of bitterness and anger from this difficult childhood later found their way into his plays, in which aggressive impulses were transformed into art. After attending Goddard College in Vermont Mamet got his theatrical feet wet with the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York. He was an actor and director first. As a playwright he achieved his first success with

David Mamet
David Mamet was born on November 30th, 1947 in Illinois. He went to college in Vermont and then studied acting at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York. As well as writing plays, David Mamet has directed and written screenplays for films, authored a number of essays, written novels and translated Chekhov. Mamet has often ended up witing screenplays for what started out as his most famous plays including American Buffalo (1975; filmed 1996), Oleanna (1992, filmed 1997) and Glengarry Glen Ross (1983, filmed 1992). David Mamet won a Pulitzer Prize for the latter. In 2005, David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross also won a Tony award for best revival of a play. His first screenplay was the 1981 adaptation of James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice. The following year David Mamet received an Academy Award nomination for The Verdict directed by Sidney Lumet. In 1987, David Mamet made his debut directing with the film, House of Games, for which he also wrote the screenplay. Mamet had a cameo role playing poker with Debra Winger in the 1987 film Black Widow. Poker is a subject that seems close to Mamet's heart. In his excellent collection of essays "Writing in Restaurants" he has an essay entitled "Things I Learnt Playing Poker on the Hill" which is full of poker wisdom.

Executive summary: Glengarry Glen Ross David Mamet is a potent and popular American playwright, screenwriter, director, and novelist. His father was a labor lawyer, his mother was a teacher, and they divorced when Mamet was 11. After that, he lived with his mother and sister. As a teen, he worked backstage at Chicago's Second City comedy club, and volunteered at a local playhouse. Mamet studied drama at Vermont's Goddard College and New York's Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre. He then returned to Chicago, working as artistic director of the famed Goodman Theatre and founding the St. Nicholas Theatre Company. It is rare for one writer to achieve wide success in both plays and films, but Mamet's works on both stage and screen have arguably resonated deeper with wider audiences than any other American playwright of the late 20th or early 21st centuries. Mamet's characters are often plotting a doublecross, and the dialogue is more clever than you'd hear in real life, described as "a poetic impression of streetwise jargon". "Where am I from?" a swindler asks in Mamet's mazelike House of Games . "I'm from the United States of kiss my ass." It was Mamet who took a stale TV cop show about prohibition and wrote the crackling

    http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/clsc31.html
David Mamet Born on November 30, 1947 in Flossmoor, Illinois, David Mamet studied at Goddard College in Vermont and at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York before venturing into the professional world of the Theatre. He began his career as an actor and director before achieving success in 1976 with three Off-Off Broadway plays, The Duck Variations Sexual Perversity in Chicago , and American Buffalo The most recognized element of Mamet's style is his sparse, clipped dialogue. Although reminiscent of such playwrights as Harold Pinter and Samuel Beckett , Mamet's dialogue is so unique that it has become known as "Mametspeak". His language is not so much "naturalistic" as it is a poetic impression of streetwise jargon. Other signature elements of Mamet's style include minimalism and a lack of stage directions. Noted for his strong male characters, Mamet's plays often deal with the decline of morality in a world which has become an emotional and spiritual wasteland. In 1984, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross which recreated the atmosphere of a gritty Chicago real estate office in which Levine, an aging salesman, is about to be sacked. He followed up in 1988 with

BY RICHARD COVINGTON S eething with impeccably timed profanity, David Mamet's play "Glengarry Glen Ross" won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1984. But in an interview, hardly a swear word escapes the playwright's lips. With his close-cropped beard and inscrutable poker face behind clear Lucite-framed eyeglasses, Mamet is the epitome of self-control, rarely cracking a smile, yet he spins out discourse on everything from aesthetics to Hollywood producers and what he sees as gratuitous sex in movies, false grief over the death of Princess Diana and the pernicious exploitation of Jews in "Schindler's List" with bitingly dry wit. The 49-year-old Chicagoan made his name with "Sexual Perversity in Chicago" (1974) and "American Buffalo" (1977), spare, dark dramas whose incisive characterizations and brilliant dialogue (like James M. Cain channeling Harold Pinter) built enormous dramatic tension. His stories, often involving the plight of small-time grifters, dubious real estate salesmen and other marginal types, explore a desperate, obsessed landscape that is deeply American. Since then Mamet has turned his caustic gaze upon Hollywood (Madonna played the aspiring actress in 1989's "Speed-the-Plow") and sexual harassment (in 1993's subversive "Oleanna"). Another play, "The Old Neighborhood," opens this November on Broadway.

Describing the afterlife of one of its Hollywood antiheroes, Bobby Gould in Hell (1989) is also an exploration of Mamet's considerable misogyny. • D avid M amet He mows down b.s. with his satire and nails the essential meanness of America, yet still sells popcorn. By Paul A. Toth Playwright and screenwriter David Mamet knows what Joe Six-Pack likes, but he also knows how Joe Six-Pack lives and talks and what he needs, so much so that motivational experts actually use Mamet's film "Glengarry Glen Ross" which does for selling what skewers do for cherry tomatoes as a motivational tool. He once wrote porn, and maybe that explains how he mows down bullshit with his satire, yet still sells popcorn. Mamet's machine-gun dialogue, both an "Airplane"-style joke on noir and a pitch-perfect copy of every overconfident asshole you ever met, is so beautiful yet utilitarian it's like holding a well-made steak knife when there's nothing to cook. You just admire it. His dialogue is so singular that it's called Mamet-speak, and when someone tries on the style, you know the clothes are borrowed.
