An Imaginary Life by David Malouf The Struggle for the Sign, the Struggle for the Self “Nature is a language - can’t you read?”
‘Ask’ by The Smiths (Rank 1988)
Language in relation to power structures, as a determinant in constructing self-identity (individual and collective) and therefore collective and individual world views, constitutes a significant part of the discourse in David Malouf’s novel An Imaginary Life David Malouf (b1934) An Imaginary Life An Imaginary Life the dialogue finally rests with the inner voice, having ranged across the spectrum from the God Emperor Augustus. When the Roman and the boy leave the village it is without words, “Wandering along together, wading through the high grasses side by side, in a kind of conversation that needs no tongue, a perfect interchange of perceptions, moods, questions, answers, that is as simple as the weather, is in fact the merest shifting of cloud shadows over a landscape or over the surface of a pool, as thoughts melt out of one mind and into another, cloud and shadow, with none of the structures of formal speech.” (Malouf: 1990 145). The ‘other’ defines the limits of self through a dialogic process of completion. In the words of the narrator Ovid:

I encountered that in my search for more information on The Great World (1990) which I am reading at the moment, one of the most profound Australian novels I have ever read. I can recall being in the same room as Malouf on at least one occasion at place, and I have seen him from time to time around the traps. But I have always been too shy to approach him. A shame, perhaps, because he really is a very fine writer. He did win the first International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 1996, the largest and most international prize of its kind, involving libraries from all corners of the globe, and open to books written in any language. Nick I of course met through M.

The Complete Stories by David Malouf
Down Under Comes On Top
By Lisa Ryers (Aug 17, 2007 )
Wasn’t it Gore Vidal who said, “Sydney is the city that San Francisco thinks it is”? In Australian short story writer David Malouf’s milieu, Australia is probably the country that California thinks it is. Malouf’s characters shift between urban and rural settings, always conscious of their man-made habitats: houses are made of pinewood and sandstone, kids play on warm bitumen. Here we see buddleia to be noticed, quince to be picked and blackfish to be angled. But like the reality of today’s California, people constantly converge on one another, parents on children, teenagers on playmates, in-laws on well-meaning couples.
In these 31 stories, some newly published, Malouf is the master of moments, whether it is documenting a pre-adolescent’s attempt to bring his father a beer without spilling it, or the way a Vietnam soldier sits on the toilet while his lover takes a bath. Malouf notices subtle life.
The first story in this collection, "In the Valley of Lagoons", is a wonder. Angus loves going to his best friend Braden’s home where dinners are quiet and men only talk when they have something to say, so unlike Angus’ own family fueled by reading and debate. The story stratifies when Braden’s brother Stuart falls for Angus’ older sister Katie who wants to get out of Far North Queensland. Malouf deftly shows how everyone goes back to the same routine once the romance fails, but the visceral daily experience has turned eerie. If you know your Chekhov, you know that a gun introduced in the first act, will appear in the third.

FEBRUARY 2005 - ISSUE 4 - ISSN 1448 - 632 COMMUNING WITH DAVID MALOUF: CONSIDERATIONS UPON SALVATION GREG SMITH Abstract Moments of salvation occur in a acute awareness of self and nature and others. Such moments significantly counteract the post-modern destruction of the "delicate equipoise of the human psyche" (Eagleton) to bring richer realisations of a greater perspective about one's coordinates in time and place, and mankind’s duty to care for the earth. Such moments can indeed become experiences of liminality, of reaching and crossing thresholds with greater courage than has been attempted previously. These moments bring a pull to the sublime, bringing a sense of the broader vision, of the bigger picture, that transcends and explains the ordinary. This sense of the sacred, like “the tug to immortality” (Malouf), engenders altruism. For the concept of salvation shifts the frame of reference beyond one's own interests, pursuits and experiences to more enduring ones. In short, it vectors experience towards personal transformation. The following article provides a hermeneutical reading of Malouf’s “The Crab Feast”(1980) that brings to bear the twin dimensions of annual neighbourly banqueting and the universal hope for salvation where the poet sings of such a moment of realisation. One could call it a moment of salvation for being an intense realisation of his shared mortality.

David Malouf: An Imaginary Life
"Highly Recommended. A reflective study on the author and his work, this program gives an insight into how he integrates his life experiences, and produces some of the most stunning prose of this century. Few writers today are writing novels and not blueprints for screenplays, and Malouf is one of them. Footage of the author reading excerpts from his novels, combined with staged journeys into his past, illustrate his power as a writer and serve as a catalyst for further reading." -School Library Journal
"Recommended. David Malouf describes his literary influences and the ways in which his novels and poetry came into existence. In personal interviews, he discusses the formative effects that imagination, memory, experience, and the self-conscious have had on his writing, while his publisher and literary critics detail his mastery of language and his rich characterizations. This is the story of how fiction is written as told by one of the great writers of twentieth-century English literature." -EMR Online
This is an illuminating profile of the popular novelist and poet David Malouf , known for his best-selling books, Remembering Babylon, Johnno, 12 Edmondstone Street, The Great World, The Year of the Foxes, The Gold Coast

Remembering Babylon - David Malouf
Apparently, David Malouf is recognised as one of Australia's finest writers. I heard an interview with him on one of the ABC's podcasts months ago - he had just written a libretto for a Aussie composer. After reading this book, I'd have to say he's pretty darn good. There are some glowing commendations on the back cover, including one from Michael Ondaatje... I'm not sure I would agree wholeheartedly with Ondaatje's assessment of "thrilling in style and adventurousness"... to me, the story is a little more understated and ethereal than thrilling.
In short, Gemmy is a Brit who after a rather miserable childhood as a street kid takes to the high seas after burning down his erstatz master's home (with said master therein...). At some point in the voyage is cast from the ship and washes up, of all places, in Queensland. He is discovered by a mob of Aborigines, and he is in pretty dire shape... I recall a rather vivid description of little crabs crawling over him as he's lying on the shore.
But life goes on, and the Aborigines take him under their collective wing and for what must be a number of years, he lives with them. I don't think they kept him around as an oddity for a bit of a laugh - he learned much in the line of bush skills, and picked up a pretty good connection to the spirits of the land.
