50. TRISTAN And ISOLT: INTRODUCTION
By contrast, the Prose Tristan, the work on which thomas malory drew most heavily, creates a noble and sympathetic Tristan who is a perfect foil for his

TRISTAN and ISOLT
Detail from Harshberger's "The Queen drank deep of that draught and gave it to Tristan"
Jump to: General Introduction
Tristan und Isolde is now more famous than the text on which it is based, the thirteenth century Tristan and Isolde of Gottfried von Strassburg. Virtually all versions of the legend revolve around conflicting themes of romantic love and political loyalty, though no two tellings treat these themes identically.
Tristan and Isolt in the Middle Ages
Scholarly speculation places the geographical origins of the Tristan and Isolt legend anywhere from Ireland to Cornwall to Wales to Persia. The biggest disputes in Tristan scholarship tend to be between the camp known as the "Celticists" who support the idea of a Celtic origin for the story, and those who support a Persian source. However, the arguments for a Persian source are as yet circumstantial, and no direct links have been proven. The Celticists have stronger evidence for their claims, as the earliest direct mentions of the characters are found in Celtic material. The Welsh Triads, thought to be a series of mnemonic devices created to help storytellers remember their tales, mention Drystan, son of Tallwch and nephew of March, who is lover to his uncle's wife Essylt. Connections have been made between these figures and a Pictish King known as Drust son of Tallorc, though given the popularity of "Drust" as a Pictish name, this cannot be viewed as concrete evidence of a historical Tristan. Much has been made as well of a pair of Irish tales, "Diarmaid and Grainne" and "The Wooing of Emer," that contain similar thematic material. As with the Persian material, however, no direct relationships have been proven, and they most likely are analogs rather than direct ancestors or descendants of the Tristan stories.

Thoroughly Modern Malory: Robin Hyde and Malorian Desire.
Megan Clayton.
This paper was presented at the ‘Designing Women and Willing Men in Medieval and Renaissance Texts’ conference in the English Department of the University of Auckland, 17 February 2001. It is derived from ‘ Iris, Read and Written: A New Poetics of Robin Hyde’ , Ph.D thesis, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, submitted June 2001. I am delighted today to have the opportunity to talk about the writing of Robin Hyde outside its usual context of New Zealand literature. In my doctoral research I have investigated those aspects of Hyde’s writing to which I consider little attention has been thus far paid, and it is with this in mind that I would like to present a summary of my research on the importance of Thomas Malory’s Le Morte Darthur to Hyde’s poetics. Robin Hyde died in 1939 at the age of thirty-three, so it is important that we bear in mind that the narrative she called Malory was not Vinaver’s 1947 edition of the Winchester manuscript, The Works of Sir Thomas Malory , that has since become the standard edition for scholarly readers, but rather the various late-nineteenth century and early-twentieth century revisions and abridgings of Caxton’s 1485 manuscript, Le Morte Darthur . The edition of Malory that Hyde seems to have owned in the 1930s was a Warner two-volume set published in 1911, complete with watercolour plates illustrating selected

Malory, Thomas ( c.
English author. He is known for the prose romance Le Morte D'Arthur c. 1470), printed in 1485, which relates the exploits of King Arthur's knights of the Round Table and the quest for the Holy Grail . He was knight of the shire from 1445. Malory is thought to have been the Warwickshire landowner of that name who was member of Parliament for Warwick in 1445 and was subsequently charged with rape, theft, and attempted murder. If that is so, he must have compiled Le Morte D'Arthur hut(2)

English prose writer. The following entry presents an overview of Malory's life and works. For additional information on his career, see LC, Volume 11.
    INTRODUCTION
Acknowledged as a seminal work of English literature, Malory's Le Morte Darthur is often credited with laying the foundation of the modern prose narrative in English and with establishing the version of the Arthurian legend that remains dominant to the present day. Malory wrote the work while in prison, taking years to create a powerful narrative that focuses on the life and times of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. In addition to being praised as a key text of the English language, Le Morte Darthur is also studied for the light it sheds on medieval culture and society.
