Who was Thomas Malory?
Malory led the unremarkable life of a country gentleman, attending to his judicial and social responsibilities as lord of the manor until 1450 when, for unknown reasons, he turned to a life of crime. With 26 men, he ambushed the Duke of Buckingham and tried to murder him. He stole livestock, and extorted money with menaces. He was accused of rape on two occasions. Leading a small army of 100 men, he attacked Combe Abbey, terrifying the monks and stealing their money and valuables. Malory was arrested and spent most of the 1450s in various prisons without ever coming to trial. He made his escape twice and was bailed out on two other occasions. Malory was one of a number of gang leaders who exploited the increasing breakdown of law and order across England. Central government was weak under Henry VI, who suffered from bouts of insanity. Local disorder thrived. Richard, Duke of York ruled as Regent during the illness of Henry VI, who came from the house of Lancaster. When Henry recovered in 1455, Richard was not about to relinquish power. Civil war broke out as the houses of York and Lancaster fought for the throne in the Wars of the Roses.

Sir Thomas Malory
Of Malory no single biographical statement is beyond conjecture save that he was a knight , that his "booke was ended in the 9th yeer of the reygne of King Edward the Fourth", and that it was not printed until 1485 when Caxton , the first of English printers, published it with an illuminating preface from his own hand. Upon an unsound derivation of Bale's, Malory was long considered a Welshman : a belief largely sustained through the gratification of identifying the birthplace of the romancer with the scenes of the Arthurian epic. It has remained for modern scholarship to advance the more probable conjecture that Malory was a gentleman of an ancient house of Warwickshire and that, as a young man, he served in France in the retinue of that estimable "Father of Courtesy", Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick (See "Who Was Sir Thomas Malory?" by G.L. Kittredge, in "Studies and Notes in Philology and Literature", V, Boston, 1897). The obscurity of the author is in somewhat dramatic contrast to the unfailing clarity of appreciation which his "Morte Arthure" has aroused for the past four centuries. While the "Morte" is a compilation, or mosaic , of the French romances of Merlin, Lancelot and Tristan, and the

Executive summary: Le Morte d'Arthur Sir Thomas Malory, translator and compiler of the famous English classic, the Morte d'Arthur . Previous to the publication of Professor Kittredge's monograph, Who was Sir Thomas Malory? the identity of this writer remained an unsolved problem. Mr. Sidney Lee, in the Dictionary of National Biography , was compelled to admit that he could find no one of that name fulfilling the necessary conditions. Of direct evidence we have very little; in the concluding passage of the book the author asks the prayers of the reader for "Syr Thomas Maleore knyght", and states that the book was ended "the ix. yere of the reygne of Kyng Edward the fourth." William Caxton , in his preface, says that he printed the book "after a copye unto me delivered whyche copye Syr Thomas Malorye dyd take oute of certeyn bookes of frensshe and reduced it in to Englysshe"; in his colophon he repeats this statement, adding that he himself is responsible for the division of the work into books and chapters, and that it was printed in 1485. It will be noted that Caxton does not say that he received the book from Malory, only that he had received a copy made by Malory; from this Professor Kittredge draws the conclusion that the compiler was no longer living. The problem then is to find a Thomas Malory who was (a) a knight, (b) alive in the ninth year of

    Abstract:
Traditional critical paradigms have generally failed to come to grips with the character of Grendel's mother in Beowulf . As a monster in the heroic order, and as a female in a masculine world, she confounds simple definitions and crosses the boundaries that define the limits of agency. Grendel's mother functions as a nexus for the representation of the many dialectical tensions – male/female, human/monster, hall/wilderness, feud/peace, symbolic/semiotic – that both underwrite and critique the poem's symbolic order. As a result, the character offers insight into the symbolic process and the ways in which readers approach the distant world of the medieval text. L©glu, Catherine.

How Sir Thomas Malory Misunderstood the Grail By Mary Jones , Student
An examination on how Le Mort d'Arthur differs with Chretien de Troyes' "Perceval"
An essay hosted at LiteratureClassics.com
One of the most enduring elements of the Arthurian mythos is that of the Holy Grail, the mysterious vessel of election found at the court of the Fisher King. Cup or cauldron, dish or stone, it plays a significant role in the Arthur of Romance , even before Chrètien de Troyes composed Perceval, or, the Story of the Grail ; prior to that, it was an important part of Celtic myth, with prototypes found in various Welsh and Irish texts, which likely indirectly influenced Chrètien’s writing. The influence of the Grail continued to the days of Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur , where the quest signifies the beginning of the end for Arthur’s kingdom. It is my contention that Malory misunderstood the meaning of the Grail—which is inevitable, as he was writing without using Perceval or any Celtic source, but instead relied on the Lancelot-Grail or Vulgate Cycle, written by Cistercian monks in the early thirteenth century (Vinaver 141). This can be seen in the way that Malory differs from the old Celtic versions and Chrètien’s Perceval.
These differences are the following: the hero is of a completely different character, in name, personality, and meaning; the Maimed King plays a greatly diminished role lacking meaning; there is no mention of a Waste Land in Malory; the meaning of the lance is underplayed; the meaning of the Grail is misconstrued as a sacred relic; there is no asking of the question, on which the quest so hangs; there is no wife of the hero; and finally, not only the outcome but the meaning of the entire quest is radically different from the Celtic version and Malory’s. Without these elements in their proper places, Malory’s version is a sanctified mess, a misconstrued tale he borrowed from the moralizing of thirteenth-century Cistercian monks.
