He was born in Paris . He worked as an English teacher, and spent much of his life in relative poverty; but he was a major French symbolist poet and rightly famed for his salons , occasional gatherings of intellectuals at his house for discussions of poetry, art, philosophy. The group became known as les Mardistes , because they met on Tuesdays (in French mardi ), and through it Mallarm© exerted considerable influence on the work of a generation of writers (see below). Portrait of St©phane Mallarm©, painting by ‰douard Manet His earlier work owes a great deal to the style established by Charles Baudelaire . His fin-de-si¨cle style, on the other hand, anticipates many of the fusions between poetry and the other arts that were to blossom in the Dadaist Surrealist , and Futurist schools, where the tension between the words themselves and the way they were displayed on the page was explored. But whereas most of this latter work was concerned principally with form, Mallarm©'s work was more generally concerned with the interplay of style and content. This is particularly evident in the highly innovative

I stumbled across this poem by St©phane Mallarm© ...and was impressed that the innovative layout was created back in the 19th century. Some digging reveals Mallarm© was a French poet who often used interesting layouts and as part of his poems. His style wound up greatly influencing how words were displayed in poetry and beyond. Executive summary: A Throw of the Dice French poet and theorist, born at Paris, on the 18th of March 1842. His life was simple and without event. His small income as professor of English in a French college was sufficient for his needs, and, with his wife and daughter, he divided the year between a fourth-floor flat in Paris and a cottage on the banks of the Seine. His Tuesday evening receptions, which did so much to form the thought of the more interesting of the younger French men of letters, were almost as important a part of his career as the few carefully elaborated books which he produced at long intervals.
