The superintendent occupies the highest position in the Philippine Military Academy. Not only is he a military commander, he also serves in a position of responsibility equivalent to that of a college president since the Academy is the premier military institution of learning in the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Since 1898 up to the present date, 61 military officers have been designated or appointed as superintendents of the Philippine Military Academy. During its early beginnings in 1895, the academy was then known as the Academia General Militar. Prior to being called the Constabulary School in September of 1926, it was an Officer's School for the Police Force of the Philippines. It was finally in December of 1936 when the National Defense Act provided for the formal organization of the Philippine Military Academy. During the pre-war years, the superintendents were primarily officers from the U.S. Armed Forces. Lt Colonel Pastor Martelino is officially recognized to be the first Filipino superintendent and the 28th to serve in this capacity. His tenure of office extended from June 1, 1936 up to May 31, 1940. Major Telesforo Martinez, a member of the Philippine Constabulary Academy Class of 1914, was also mentioned as the first Filipino superintendent of the Academy, however, no official record of his tenure of office has been made available. James F. Quinn served as superintendent on three different terms while John B. Bennet, Thomas I. Mair, John R. White, and Jose N. Evangelista each served for two separate terms. Angel G. Kanapi holds the distinction of being the only alumnus who served the Philippine Military Academy thrice in his entire military service - as a Tactical Officer from 1960 to 1962, as Commandant of Cadets from 1972 to 1974, and finally as Superintendent from 1978 to 1982. He belonged to the Class of 1953.

11th Annual Literary Festival
Old Dominion University
October 3-6, 1988 Clarence Major Clarence Major is the author of seven novels, including most recently Such Was the Season (1987) and Painted Turtle: Woman With Guitar (1988) one collection of stories, Fun and Games (1988); and eight books of poetry, most recently Surfaces and Masks (1987) and Some Observations of a Stranger at Zuin in the Latter Part of the Century (1988). He also edited the Dictionary of Afro-American Slang and The Dark and Feeling: Black American Writers and Their Work . He has won the Western States Book Award for Fiction for My Amputations , a Pushcart Prize, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a National Council on the Arts Fellowship. He has lectured and read from his work in England, Algeria, France, Liberia, West Germany, Ghana, Italy, the Netherlands, and Yugoslavia, as well as in this country. He is currently Professor of English at the University of Colorado. Major's earlier work was experimental; in fact, some critics say he "has been in the forefront of experimental poetry and prose." Of his most recent novel, the New York Times Book Review said: " Such was the Season is an old-fashioned, straight-ahead narrative crammed with action, a dramatic storyline and meaty characterization. But it's the widow Annie Eliza's melodic voice, by turns lilting and gruff, that salts and peppers and sweetens this story, enriching its flavor and meaning.... Clarence Major himself come home to touch base with the blues and spirituals that continue to nourish and express the lives of those people he writes about so knowingly, and with contagious affection."

Clarence Major and His Art

Portraits of an African American Postmodernist
Edited by Bernard W. Bell
Introduction.

Although Clarence Major's poetry is known in some circles and his novels in others, the full range of his work is neither widely known nor generally taught, even in black institutions. Poet, novelist, essayist, editor, anthologist, lexicographer, and painter, Major is one of the most compelling, challenging, prolific, and multitalented contemporary American artists of African descent. Inspired as a teenager by the impressionistic paintings of van Gogh and the symbolist poetry of Rimbaud, as well as by such black writers as Jean Toomer, Richard Wright, Chester Himes, and Willard Motley, Major has produced a collection of art whose trajectory suggests the complex dynamics of his transgressive voice and double consciousness as an African American postmodernist artist. By transgressive I mean boldly moving beyond traditional literary limits and cultural boundaries in experimenting with different, occasionally multiple, narrative voices. Although voice refers basically to informal everyday speaking and to formal public oratory, it is used here primarily to signify the reader's sense of the particular qualities of the human presence, especially intellectual, political, and moral sensibility, that has selected, constructed, and expressed the pattern of materials in the text.
