Little flowers of Joseph de Maistre (1)
The good doctor's home. Note the luxury garrerpenthouse.
The community of Lido, home of The Death In Venice
One of the things one notices while strolling through Lido is how many of these free-standing villas with generous gardens have been subdivided into condominiums. Closer inspection reveals everywhere the same story. There is a splendid villa, in one of the main streets of the town, which tells it best. Its wrought iron gate, bearing the date of 1901, announces in fancy, 10 inch lettering that it once belonged to Dottore X, Gynecologist. It is a large, three-story house, by ocular inspection some 800 square meters in surface area, with a large garden. Back when it was built, it probably employed 7 or 10 servants.
On a pillar of the gate there is now a row of bell-buttons for the residents of the building. There are 7 buttons, each for a separate condominium, each with a different last name on it, of which only one once belonged to good Dottore X. These are his third or fourth generation descendants impoverished by the inexorable law of subdivision of inheritance. That in itself is telling; but to me the most telling is top button, which announces Dottore Y, gynecologist.

These are “joseph maistre and the Origins of Fascism” in “The Crooked Timber of Humanity”, and “maistre” in “Freedom and its Betrayal”.

A Great and Virtuous Man? Joseph de Maistre Bill Schardt Joseph de Maistre was born in 1753 at Chambery (in Savoy, which is now part of France). He spent his life in the service of the king of Sardinia, performing a variety of administrative and diplomatic roles, notably for a long period as a plenipotentiary in St Petersburg (1802 to 1817). He returned to Turin in 1817 and died in 1821. Thus his life spanned the whole of the period of the French revolution. Initially his views had been mildly liberal, but the revolution turned him into reactionary. Isaiah Berlin has been described as a liberal who was attracted to his opponents, and he seemed to have a somewhat perverse liking for Maistre, and produced at least two essays on him. These are “Joseph Maistre and the Origins of Fascism” in “The Crooked Timber of Humanity”, and “Maistre” in “Freedom and its Betrayal”. The Catholic Encyclopaedia describes Maistre as one of the finest writers in the French language, and the vigour and clarity of his prose is apparent even in translation. The Encyclopaedia also sums him up as “ a great and virtuous man ”, a conclusion with which some of us may disagree.

The Pope (1821) Biography Joseph-Marie de Maistre was a political philosopher and diplomat who urged the creation of a Roman Catholic theocracy in order to preserve morality and religion. According to de Maistre, the general decline in moral values and reilgious ideals could be traced to the "satanic" French Revolution and the spread of Englightenment ideas regarding freedom of thought, freedom of belief, and the primacy of reason. He argued that people would be better off if they surrendered both reason and philosophy to faith and religion. Fundamentally a pessimist regarding human nature, a basic principle underlying most forms of political and religious conservatism, de Maistre believed that people's recognition of their own sinfulness led them to crave order and discipline; this, in turn, is what leads to the development and need for strong, authoritative leaders and political institutions.

Over the last two years the popular magazines L'Histoire and Le Nouvel observateur Sade ou l'invention du corps libertin Sade's status as a philosophe is justified by particular aspects of his work, perhaps the most important of which is its treatment of religion. The long dissertations attacking the existence of God and the practice of religion that fill his work have often defined his association with the philosophes . For example, in her recent biography of Rachilde, Melanie Hawthorne wrote: 'Despite being educated by priests, Rachilde remained a religious skeptic, thinking of herself as owing more to Voltaire and Sade than to religious or mystical patterns of thought.'
