  • Derek Mahon 1941-
    Irish poet, playwright, and journalist.
    INTRODUCTION
Derek Mahon's poetry expresses the feelings of exile and the oppressiveness of history that characterize the modern individual. His is a pessimism that sees great beauty in mundane aspects of life—a frying pan, mushrooms, cigarettes—but despairs at their impermanence and eventual meaninglessness. Part of Mahon's art, however, has been to apply exceptional technical ability and light humor to these weighty themes. Mahon made his reputation as one of several young authors constituting a renaissance in the literature of Northern Ireland, but he has not identified himself with Ireland as closely as some of his contemporaries have; instead, Mahon has most often written as an outsider and observer, and in doing so has developed an original poetic voice that eschews provincialism and explores the role of the artist in a larger world.
    Biographical Information
Mahon was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1941, and was raised in Glengormley, County Antrim. He attended school at the Protestant-run Royal Belfast Academical Institution from 1953 to 1960 and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1965 with a degree in French, haven taken a year of his college education to study at the Sorbonne. While in Dublin Mahon met many present and future Irish authors, including Michael Longley, John Montague, and Louis MacNeice. Like Longley, Mahon received the Eric Gregory Award for poets under 30 in 1965. After leaving Trinity he traveled through North America and Europe, then published his first book of poetry

Ten of Derek Mahon's poems are available for selection to students of Leaving Certificate English students this year and again in 2004. The poems are as follows: Grandfather, Daytrip to Donegal, After the Titanic, Ecclesiastes, As It Should Be, A Disused Shed in Co. Wexford, The Chinese Restaurant in Portrush, Rathlin, Antarctica and Kinsale. Students who are studying the higher level course are advised to study at least six poems (Syllabus 6.3.) while two of the poems, Grandfather and After the Titanic, are also prescribed for students taking the ordinary level course. The following possibilities are offered as suggestions for work that might be useful with two of the above mentioned poems.
    Grandfather
Approaches to the poem: Photographs : This is just one picture of an old person. Ask class to bring in photographs / pictures of other old people, either their own relatives or someone else. Begin a discussion of old age and how it must feel to be getting older. Tensions : There is a tension in the poem between the childlike man and the cunning, cute man. Make a list of the words/phrases where this is suggested and say what is thus implied about the grandfather.

Northern Irish poet, born in Belfast and educated at Belfast Institute and Trinity College, Dublin. Together with Seamus Heaney Night-Crossing (1968) and The Snow Party (1975), is characterized by squalid landscapes and desperate situations. After a brief teaching career, Mahon turned to journalism and creative writing. His early works, such as Twelve Poems (1965), show the influence of Louis MacNeice and W H Auden. Later publications include The Hunt by Night A Kensington Notebook (1984), and Antarctica (1985). The anthology (1979) contained some revised versions of earlier works, and a new collection Selected Poems appeared in 1991. hut(1)

Peter McDonald reviews Harbour Lights by Derek Mahon
In "The Cloud Ceiling", a poem celebrating the birth of a daughter relatively late in his middle age, Derek Mahon allows himself some reflection on the changes in his writing life: I who, though soft-hearted, always admired
granite and blackthorn and the verse hard-wired,
tingle and flow like January thaw-water
in contemplation of this rosy daughter.
"Hard-wired" is less technical (probably) than it is metaphorical here; and certainly, Mahon's own verse has often - especially early in his career - been hard-wired with the formal structures and instincts which made possible poetry of enormous clarity, memorability, and imaginative exactness. One suspects that Mahon's admiration for the hard and the sharp remains as strong as ever; but other kinds of poetry, like other kinds of feeling, are nowadays more liable to intrude. The lines here themselves illustrate this, with the seemingly bathetic (in terms of rhyme and phrasing, however uplifting and bracing the reality it records) "contemplation of this rosy daughter". Mahon immediately adds, as though aware of the sentimentality all around him, the injunction to "Be patient with an old bloke" (who " probably won't be here when you've grown up", as the last line says), and asks the infant to

Welcome to C.W. Post Library 's rare book holdings of "Irish Contemporary Poets." We are indebted to the generosity of the late Winthrop Palmer who has made this possible. Mrs. Palmer most especially desired the Library to develop its collection in the areas of poetry, and Irish and French literatures. The Special Collections Department of the Library has adhered to this initial focus. This catalog is concerned with the writings, including translations, of 65 Irish men and women who are primarily poets. Whenever these writers produce a work in another format it is so noted within brackets. A poet is "contemporary" whose works are published inclusively, or almost so, during the second half of the 20th Century. Translations are arranged after the poet's original works, and collaborations are so noted. The writings of these poets found in various collections and periodicals will be forthcoming in another holdings list. So, stay tuned. We welcome your comments and questions.
