edit Biography
Mahon was born the only child of Ulster Protestant working class parents. His father worked at Harland and Wolff while his mother worked at a local Flax Mill. During his childhood, he claims he was something of a solitary dreamer, comfortable with his own company yet aware of the world around him.He became interested in literature from an early age. He attended Skegoneil Primary school and then the Royal Belfast Academical Institution . At the institute he encountered fellow students who shared his interest in literature and poetry. The school produced a magazine to which Mahon produced some of his early poems. According to the critic Hugh Haughton his early poems were highly fluent and extraordinary for a person so young. Mahon pursued third level studies at Trinity College Dublin where he edited Icarus , and formed many friendships with writers such as Michael Longley Eavan Boland and Brendan Kennelly . He became more aware of the world around him and started to mature as a poet. He left Trinity in to take up studies in the Sorbonne in Paris.

DEREK MAHON
A Disused Shed in Co. Wexford Let them not forget us, the weak souls among the asphodels
'Mythistorema' For J.G. Farrell
Peruvian mines, worked out and abandoned
To a slow clock of condensation,
An echo trapped forever, and a flutter
Of wildflowers in the lift-shaft,
Indian compounds where the wind dances
And a door bangs with diminished confidence,
Lime crevices behind rippling rainbarrels, Dog corners for bone burials; And a disused shed in Co. Wexford, Deep in the grounds of a burnt-out hotel, Among the bathtubs and the washbasins A thousand mushrooms crowd to a keyhole. This is the one star in their firmament Or frames a star within a star. What should they do there but desire? So many days beyond the rhododendrons With the world waltzing in its bowl of cloud, They have learnt patience and silence Listening to the rooks querulous in the high wood. They have been waiting for us in a foetor Of vegetable sweat since civil war days, Since the gravel-crunching, interminable departure

    • It's practically my subject, my theme: solitude and community; the weirdness and terrors of solitude: the stifling and consolations of community. Also, the consolations of solitude. Wherever I've travelled I could never quite shake off a homeward gravitation towards Ulster. I am a recovering Protestant. Belfast, in particular, will always be a part of me, that dark unlovely town with its Sunday silences. Although every poem I suppose is an attempt, I suppose it's religon - the notion of art as consolation, the belief that "everything will be all right." I suppose I can't finally seriously believe that we're not immortal. So yes, in some sense everything is going to be all right.

    Derek Mahon
"There is a copiousness and excitement about these poems that is to be found only in work of the highest order." Seamus Heaney. "The man/ Who laughs is merely someone/ Who has not yet heard the terrible news." Derek Mahon. The Hunt by Night Girls on the Bridge, a perfect sestet, stereoscopically evokes two of Edvard Munch's most famous paintings: Girls on a Bridge and The Scream. When the complex energy of language is haunted out of the paintings, they begin to tremble like things come alive. Once again the latent terror of violence is held back until the closing lines; imbued with 'time sense', the recreated paintings seem to shiver with a profound apprehension of imminent doom. Ah well, who fears to speak of a disused shed? In a country where even the postman and the taxi driver are giving out with spondees and dactyls and all classes of versified doggerel, the competition is fierce but Mahon ranks among most popular living writers in Ireland today.
