The True Knowledge of Ken MacLeod
"There are two sides to the true knowledge, and you have forgotten one of them" - Ken MacLeod, The Cassini Division Ken MacLeod is one of the most significant writers to emerge from British science fiction in the last decade. Lauded on both sides of the Atlantic, his novels explore political and utopian thought with intelligence, wit and a satiric eye. His first novel, The Star Fraction , was hailed as "a successful comic Trotskyist science fiction novel" and yet went on to win the Prometheus Award given by the Libertarian Futurist Society. This volume is the first attempt to examine MacLeod's work in depth, bringing together works by John H. Arnold, K. V. Bailey, Neal Baker, James Brown, Adam Frisch, Joan Gordon, Farah Mendlesohn, John Newsinger and Andy Wood and interviews with MacLeod by Andrew M. Butler and Andy Sawyer. It covers not only the Fall Revolution Quartet and the Engines of Light Trilogy, but also MacLeod's polemics and poetry. The essays discuss his politics and analyse the ideological history from which they emerge. They also explore his place in the history of science fiction, the rights of the posthuman and the ethics of genocide. In addition there are contributions from Ken Macleod himself: a re-examination of fellow Scot Iain M. Banks's

Thu, 15 Oct 1998 13:40:56 -0500 (CDT) * A module to marshal simple Python data types into XML. There's still no obvious DTD to choose for this, though; I'm starting to think that I should drop xml/marshal.py, and wait until version 1.1 of the package to add this; perhaps by then one DTD will have emerged as the standard for doing this. I've just completed a draft DTD for Casbah/LDO XML serialization (below). This DTD can be targeted, so you can be as specific about Python types as pickle, or interoperable as with Casbah/LDO. Note specifically that any object can be used as a key in a dictionary, as Python (and SmallTalk, for example) support. Most other DTDs I've seen only support string keys. As an implementation note, LDO's Python binary serialization uses pickle's `dump' and `load' methods, it also can act as a stream-head so it supports `flush' as well. Ken MacLeod is a name synonymous with the British wave of New Space Opera. With ten novels and a slew of short stories to his name, his work is renowned for blending science fiction and radical politics in books that both entertain and challenge the reader. I interviewed Ken during a brief writing hiatus in the run-up to the publication of his forthcoming near-future thriller, The Execution Channel To start off with, maybe you'd give us a brief blurb for The Execution Channel , in your own words?
The situation is this: fighting has spread across the Middle East and Central Asia to the borders of China. In the US, refugees from climate-change disaster subsist in FEMA camps or on the streets. China and Russia aren't the only states considering their options in a world with a lone and unpredictable superpower: certain nations of Old Europe are secretly preparing for the worst.

A Trotskyist libertarian cyberpunk?
By Andrew Leonard Reviews "Interpreter of Maladies" In a stunning debut collection about Asians in America, an author casts an empathetic eye on assimilation. By Charles Taylor Dear Mr. Blue Is three a crowd? By Garrison Keillor Book Bag Five favorite novels from a decade that was wilder than you think. By E.L. Doctorow Complete archives for Books An engine of anarchy Ken MacLeod talks about his rebellious youth, his political paradoxes and the visionary power of cyberpunk. By Andrew Leonard July 27, 1999 K en MacLeod is the greatest living Trotskyist libertarian cyberpunk science-fiction humorist. It's a safe claim to make, because he is undoubtedly the only such creature. The 44-year-old Scot and former computer programmer imagines futures full of both socialist unions and libertarian enclaves, warring with each other and within themselves. You don't often find communist mercenaries working for capitalist insurance companies in science fiction. In Ken MacLeod's future, such political incongruities are a joyous fact of life. Add your regular cyberpunk ingredients machine consciousness, post-human trickery, cool gadgets and lots of good drugs and rock 'n' roll and you have a heady, rollicking brew. MacLeod's political fiction is no pose. He's a former Communist Party member who has won two Prometheus awards for best libertarian science fiction novel. After his American editor told me that MacLeod was a regular "trenchant" contributor to Internet-based discussion groups, I decided to do some cyberspace stalking. Where does he hang out? The bulk of his contributions are in the Usenet newsgroup "rec.arts.sf.written." No surprise there r.a.s.w. is one of the oldest watering holes on the Net quite a few authors congregate there with their fans, critics and peers. But his next most favored spot is "alt.politics.socialism.trotsky" and after that, a little down the list, "talk.politics.libertarianism." One of MacLeod's hobbies, it seems, when he's between books, is plunging into the Internet fray to argue about what Marx and Engels really intended, and to engage in the endless hair-splitting dear to libertarians.
