FIONA MACLEOD 150th ANNIVERSARY
12 September 1855:
In 1878 he settled down in London, establishing himself as an editor and literary journalist, and became the London art critic for the Glasgow Herald in 1883. In London he cultivated a wide range of connections in the artistic and literary community, notably the artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti (for whom the Manx novelist Hall Caine had served as a secretary.) Sharp would eventually score his first major success with a biography of Rossetti. Fiona MacLeod would be born of another artistic friendship. On a visit to Rome in 1890 Sharp met Mrs. Edith Wingate Rinder, and found they shared a deep common interest in Celtic culture. (Rinder herself was a noted translator of Breton folklore.) His friendship with Rinder, it is believed, inspired Sharp to strike out in an entirely new direction. Under the pen-name of Fiona MacLeod (the surname came from a Hebridean fisherman who had befriended the young William) Sharp wrote a romantic novel, Pharais, A Romance of the Isles

Scottish physiologist who was awarded a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1923 with Frederick Banting for their part in the discovery and isolation of the hormone insulin , the hormone in the pancreas that reduces blood glucose (sugar) levels. Since its discovery, insulin has been used extensively as the main treatment for diabetes. Macleod was born in Cluny, Scotland, and studied medicine at the University of Aberdeen in 1898. He went on to study biochemistry at the University of Leipzig and published various papers on biochemical aspects of respiration and carbohydrate metabolism. While professor of physiology in Toronto (from 1918 onwards) he invited Banting to work with him and his colleague Charles Best in their search for the hormone in the pancreas that reduces blood glucose levels. The hormone responsible for this, insulin, was first isolated in Macleod's laboratory by Banting and Best in 1921 while Macleod was away on holiday. hut(1)

The Visionary Writings of Fiona MacLeod
I am indebted to RJ Stewart for making me aware of the writings of Fiona MacLeod, a Celtic visionary and romantic of the late nineteenth century. Readers of her era were enchanted by the marvelous weaving of folklore, myth, vision, and personal observation she brought forth in her prose and poetry. It caused some consternation in that time when it was revealed that the lovely, mysterious Fiona MacLeod was in fact William Sharp. This seems to have been more than a literary affectation or a trick to sell books, but a genuine effort on William Sharp's part to express an inner female nature. Fiona's literary stock tumbled quite a bit after this discovery, though her work continued to enjoy some success thereafter, most notably with the long running opera The Immortal Hour based on Fiona's poetry, which ran in England in the 1920's and 1930's. Here I have made available on the web the contents of By Sundown Shores , a compilation published in 1902 by Thomas B. Mosher of Portland Maine. In addition to material from Fiona's earlier works, there is some material that is unique to this volume. This is a rare book, only 425 having been printed.

AN EXHIBITION OF BOOKS FROM THE PRESS OF T HOMAS B IRD M OSHER
FROM THE COLLECTION OF
Norman H. Strouse January 16 th - March 12 th Logan Square
INTRODUCTION T HOMAS B IRD M OSHER was a pirate at times. But there was passion in his piracy. From his captain's quarters located at 45 Exchange Street, Portland, Maine, he swept the seven literary seas for its treasure of golden literature, and placed it at the disposal of a select circle who loved inspiring thoughts clothed in books of beautiful format. The writings of Robert Bridges, the Brownings, Shakespeare, William Morris and Andrew Lang of England; Baudelaire, Flaubert, Gautier, Renan from the Continent; Michael Angelo, Virgil, Dante and Plato, from the Mediterranean world; Ecclesiastes, The Rubáiyát, and The Kasidah, from the Middle East; The Song Celestial from the Orient; Walt Whitman, Poe, Emerson, and Thoreau from America; and Stevenson's Father Damien from the Pacific-what other publisher could have amassed such treasure from the great masters of the human heart and tongue! Thomas Bird Mosher's name is almost as unfamiliar to most people as it has been important in American publishing. He is little discussed today for his influence on the development of fine printing and the private press in this country; yet, wherever in the world the English language is spoken, and men have succumbed to the love of books as artifacts as well as for content, the Mosher colophon is still to be found in the libraries of a select few. They have found in Mosher books an essential and deeply satisfying beauty which springs from the combining of exquisite physical appearance and choice literary content into inseparable harmony.
