About Archibald Macleish
During his long and productive life, Archibald MacLeish was many things:
  • A U.S. Army captain during World War I (1978-1978) A teacher at Harvard Law School (1919-1923) An American in Paris (1923-1928) A journalist (Fortune Magazine, 1929-1938) Librarian of Congress (1939-1944) A speech writer for Franklin Roosevelt and others Assistant Secretary of State (1944-1945) Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University (1949-1962) Simpson Lecturer at Amherst College (1963-1967)
His foremost love was always poetry. This love prompted him to leave a promising law career and take his chances as an artist in Paris, where he struggled to discover his poetic voice and to write the "lines that would seem to me to be good." In Paris, he perfected his craft and began a distinguished literary career.
Macleish was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes: for Conquistador, 1933; for Collected Poems, 1917-1952 in 1953; and J.B., 1959. He also received the Bollingen Prize, the National Book Award, the National Medal for Literature, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Tony and Academy Awards, the first for J.B. and the second for the Eleanor Roosevelt Story, for which he wrote the script.

Archibald MacLeish There
Archibald MacLeish was not a prophet. But his resume was impressive anyways: Yale (Skull and Bones), Harvard Law (graduated first in his class), almost-partner at Choate, Hall, and Stewart (resigned the day they offered him a partnership in order to move to Paris and study poetry, where he befriended Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Cummings), editor at Fortune magazine, Librarian of Congress, Roosevelt’s “Minister of Culture” and speechwriter (most of the 1941 inaugural address, for example), Chairman of the Committee on War Information, Assistant Secretary of State for Cultural and Public Affairs (where he helped write the UN charter, the preamble being mostly his work), first American member of UNESCO’s Executive Council, Harvard Chair of Rhetoric and Oratory, poet, playwright, and critic.
But not much of his work is read these days, although his lyric poems are still praised in anthologies. “The End of the World” is one of these. It’s a carny sonnet and pleases on first reading like a trapeze performance. At least, the octave does. The sestet is something of a different show. More existential. And uses the art of repetition to get its message across before it fizzles into nihilism. There are some things that make me smile. Like the repetition of “quite unexpectedly.” Or the crazy constant movement in that octave. And all the repetition in the sestet, as if one had to will something out of nothing.

Letter from Archibald MacLeish about relocating the charters of freedom during World War II: protecting our founding document in war and peace
Social Education September, 2003 by Michael Hussey As tensions mounted, in Europe during the 1930s, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, and other European countries formulated plans to protect their national artistic and cultural treasures. By the summer of 1939, these governments put their plans into motion. Museums such as the Louvre sent much of their collections to relatively safer locations in the countryside.

Life and Death in Archibald MacLeish's Poem The End Of The World
In Archibald MacLeish's poem "The End Of The World", life appears to be set in "waltz time" as if you have all the time in the world to spare. But, in reality, death may come without warning and hit you with its sheer nothingness. MacLeish applies this concept through the use of literary devices such as theme, imagery, and selection of detail, to compare and contrast the relationship between life and death.
The theme in "The End Of The World" is that life is short but full of surprises and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Take life for what it is worth, because death may come at any moment and is the exact opposite feeling of life. It's numbing to the senses and it represents not only the death of your being but also the death of your life-long dreams and aspirations. MacLeish expresses his views on life and death by writing the poem in two separate stanzas. He then writes about the two experiences as though they are polar opposites.
The concept of "life" is given specific, vivid details with queer descriptions of such things as an "armless ambidextrian" (which is also ironic because someone with no arms cannot possibly be ambidextrous.) MacLeish wants to convey how odd but pleasing life can be, and that even when weird things happen, to go with the flow. In the selection of detail for "death", MacLeish uses the words "there" and "nothing" over and over to show how monotonous the process of death may be.

"POEM IN PROSE"
by Archibald MacLeish
"In all that becomes a woman
Her words and her ways are beautiful ."
This poem is for my wife.
I have made it plainly and honestly:
The mark is on it
Like the burl on the knife. I have not made it for praise.
She has no more need for praise
Than summer has
Or the bright days. In all that becomes a woman
Her words and her ways are beautiful: Love's lovely duty, the well-swept room. Wherever she is there is sun And time and a sweet air: Peace is there, Work done. There are always curtains and flowers And candles and baked bread And a cloth spread And a clean house. Her voice when she sings is a voice At dawn by a freshening spring Where the wave leaps in the wind And rejoices. Wherever she is it is now. It is here where the apples are: Here in the stars

ARCHIBALD MACLEISH: Man of many occupations
Archibald MacLeish was a man of many occupations. He was a: teacher, lawyer, poet, journalist, playwright, ÒlibrarianÓ, and he held other high-ranking positions in government. His interests were wide-ranging. However, the two things that drove him in life were: 1) to be able to write the greatest poem, and, 2) to help a great cause. Here was a man who was a great thinker and was not afraid to speak his mind. Archibald MacLeish was born on May 7, 1892 in Glencoe, Illinois. He was the third of five children born of the union of Andrew MacLeish and Martha Hillard MacLeish. (Andrew had been twice widowed and had three other children from his two previous marriages.) Andrew was a successful dry-goods merchant from Scotland. He was over fifty years of age by the time ÒArchieÓ (as Archibald was called) was born. Thus, he paid Archie very little attention as he was growing up. It is said that this was the reason Archie felt he had to be, and was, successful at everything he did. Martha ÒPattyÓ Hillard MacLeish was one of the most influential persons in her sonÕs life.

Author: poem of Archibald MacLeish Type: poem Views:
A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit,
Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb,
Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown
A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds. A poem should be motionless in time As the moon climbs, Leaving, as the moon releases Twig by twig the night-entangled trees, Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves, Memory by memory the mind A poem should be motionless in time As the moon climbs. A poem should be equal to: Not true. For all the history of grief An empty doorway and a maple leaf. For love The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea A poem should not mean But be.
