43. The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak - A Memorial Day Poem
We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning. We were young, they say. We have died; remember us. by archibald macleish, 18921982, American Poet
http://www.squadron13.com/CivilResistance/MemorialDay2005/youngdeadsoldiers.htm
The Young Dead Soldiers Do Not Speak
This is the poem that our own Edgar Peara centered his hourly service on throughout the day: The young dead soldiers do not speak.
Nevertheless, they are heard in the still houses:
who has not heard them?
They have a silence that speaks for them at night
and when the clock counts.
They say: We were young. We have died.
Remember us.
They say: We have done what we could
but until it is finished it is not done.
They say: We have given our lives but until it is finished
no one can know what our lives gave. They say: Our deaths are not ours: they are yours, they will mean what you make them. They say: Whether our lives and our deaths were for peace and a new hope or for nothing we cannot say, it is you who must say this. We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning. We were young, they say. We have died; remember us. by Archibald MacLeish, 1892-1982, American Poet Memorial Day Observance - Main Page Our Press Release - dated May 26, 2005 More pictures and story of the day... Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982)
In his lifetime, Archibald MacLeish received the Pulitzer Prize three times for his poetic works: the first in 1932 for Conquistador , his epic poem about the conquest of Mexico by the Spanish; the second in 1952 for his volume Collected Poems , and a third in 1958 for J.B. , a drama depicting a contemporary treatment of the story of Job.
Before he was known as a poet, however, he was a lawyer, an editor, assistant secretary of state and Harvard professor. He received his B.A. at Yale and an L.L.B. from Harvard in 1919, practicing law for a few years in Boston. He then traveled to Europe, wanting to wanting to focus on the possibilities of a writing career, and there came under the influence of T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound.
When he returned to the States served as editor of Fortune magazine from 1928-1938 and Librarian of Congress from 1939-1944. His early poetry reflected a concern with national and social issues and he became known as "the poet laureate of the New Deal."

MacLeish, a much-honored American poet, has been awarded three Pulitzer Prizes. A lyric poet with an epic imagination, MacLeish's themes are large in scope. His verse drama, J.B. , was both a Broadway play and a best-seller. (See also Contemporary Authors , Vols. 9-12, rev. ed.) Many persons are inclined to look upon Mr. MacLeish as the Joseph Addison of the New Deal. Such an attitude focuses attention on one small phase of his work, and that the least important from the point of view of his stature as a poet. It is true that his most insistent subject is political, but he is not political in the party sense of the word, but in its larger connotation of the problem of man's relation to society. Other subjects, however, are equally important from the point of view of his survival as a poet. These are the subjects that concern every poet at some stage of his poetic life: autobiographic reminiscences, love,... [The entire page is 1707 words long]

In his day, he was considered one of the stars of the up-and-coming literary scene. Today his prose seems badly dated and much of the verse and drama feels preachy and prolix. But a dozen or so of his poems - like "Ars Poetica" and "You, Andrew Marvell" remain among the splendors of 20th-century American literature. Few poets of his generation equaled that legacy.
