MacLeish was born in Glencoe, Illinois . His father, Andrew MacLeish , worked as a dry-goods merchant. His mother, Martha Hillard, was a college professor. He grew up on an estate bordering Lake Michigan He attended the Hotchkiss School from 1907 to 1911, before moving on to Yale University , where he majored in English and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and selected for the Skull and Bones society. He then enrolled in the Harvard Law School In , he married Ada Hitchcock His studies were interrupted by World War I , in which he served first as an ambulance driver and later as a captain of artillery . He graduated from the law school in . He taught law for a semester for the government department at Harvard , then worked briefly as an editor for The New Republic . He next spent three years practicing law. In MacLeish left his law firm and moved with his wife to Paris , where they joined the community of literary expatriates that included such members as Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway . He returned to America in From to he worked as a writer and editor for Fortune Magazine , during which he also became increasingly politically active, especially with anti-fascist causes. Archibald MacLeish was born in Glencoe, Il linois, on 7th May 1892. After graduating from Yale University in 1915 and two years later his first book of poems, Tower of Ivory , was published. MacLeish he joined the United States Army in 1917. He served in France as a field artillery officer during the First World War and during the summer of 1918 took part in the 2nd Battle of the Marne On his return to the United States MacLeish resumed his studies and received a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1919 and became a lawyer in Boston In 1923 MacLeish gave up his legal career and decided to tour Europe. born May 7, 1892, Glencoe, Ill., U.S. died April 20, 1982, Boston, Mass. American poet, playwright, teacher, and public official, whose concern for liberal democracy figured in much of his work, although his most memorable lyrics are of a more private nature. MacLeish attended Yale University, where he was active in literature and football. He graduated in 1915 and then earned a law degree at Harvard. While there, he married Ada Hitchcock of Connecticut, a union that lasted for the rest of his life. The Happy Marriage The Pot of Earth Streets in the Moon (1926), and The Hamlet of A. MacLeish Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot . During this period he wrote his much-anthologized poem Ars Poetica New Found Land (1930), which reveals the simple lyric eloquence that is the persistent MacLeish note. It includes one of his most frequently anthologized poems, You, Andrew Marvell.

A graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School, MacLeish left legal practice to travel to Paris in the 1920's. Toward the end of the decade, he returned to the United States, imbued with the fervor of social commitment which ultimately led him to join Franklin Roosevelt's administration. He served in a number of positions, including Assistant Secretary of State in 1944-45. From 1949 to 1962, MacLeish was a chaired professor at Harvard. MacLeish was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes for his poetry and drama and also won the Bollingen Prize and a National Book Award.

Why didn't it [ Conquistador ] ring your bell? I have had plenty of cracks. Pound wrote me that it was damn bad and Tate informed the world that although I was skillful enough I was morally obsolete. And neither comment disturbed me much because I know myself that the poem isn't damn bad and I also know why Pound says (but does not think) it is. While as for Tate I simply have to confess that that I don't understand his vocabulary. He apparently means that the poem was written in past tense.
