Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was a prolific writer of fantasy fiction who provided an influence for many who have subsequently written in this field, however, in his later years this Caerleon born author suffered greatly from financial uncertainty. To ease his situation his friends arranged an 80th birthday lunch at which he was presented with a cheque consisting of donations from them all. This text records the speech that he gave at this event.

The Hill of Dreams
by Arthur Machen
(Tartarus Press, 2006; $55.00; ISBN: 1872621937 .)
Review by William P Simmons A storyteller of startling imaginative power and lyrical poetry, Arthur Machen (born Arthur Llewellyn Jones, 1863-1974) approached weird fiction with a mystic's belief and a craftsman's devotion to form, weaving tales of decrepit pagan influences and the conflict between external appearance and inner truths (among other themes) into his dark art. His thematic preoccupation with hidden realities have influenced innumerable authors of the fantastique, including H.P. Lovecraft, who ranked "The White People" as the second greatest weird tale, surpassed only by Blackwood's "The Willows." Essayist, journalist, actor, and occultist (a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn), Machen's most inspired period came after receiving an inheritance, allowing him to devote his time to writing rather than earning his daily bread. Toil and tragedy were no strangers to Machen's life a shadow-tinged dream world where a late night walk could bring him face-to-face with characters from the pages of his own works and rambles through pagan ruins could transport him into fits of exquisite wonder. Perhaps best known for his scandalous late-Victorian story "The Great God Pan" (1894) and the episodic novel

"... I am reminded of other people as I look around this room. There at the end of the room are five photographs of Arthur Machen and one of his Melina Place home; and there's a drawing of it made by my good friend, Frayne Williams. On the old mantel is a little stone replica of the Tintagel Cross, while on the shelves I see a row of personally inscribed books written by Norman Davey. All these represent memorable meetings with memorable people who for a moment have shared the road I have come. Though my primary objective in visiting England in 1920 and again in 1923 was to gather material for work on Robert Burton, there were diversions. Burton took me to the British Museum and to Oxford's Bodleian and Christ Church libraries, and he guided me to Leicestershire; but I was happy to take time out for Max Gate, Stratford, Boscastle, Norwich (which was the home of the Willetts) and my many visits to Machen's Melina Place and to his haunts in Wales were happy indulgences.

Re: Arthur Machen's "The White People"
James Rogers (December 22, 1999) I don't mean to detract from the ongoing discussion of Aickman's The Visiting Star", but does anyone feel like a similar treatment of Machen's "White People"? In my opinion this is one of the most ambiguous and compelling texts of all time.... comparable to "the Hospice" in terms of suggestion without filling in the blanks. What provokes the girl to suicide? What is the significance of the "finger-crushing" episode? What, what, what..... I daresay that the story is obvious to all the rest of the abgf crowd but I have been reading this story for many years now, with great satisfaction and little illumination. I have considered sending a copy to a literate and conservative Priest I know, but I am a bit concerned about the response I would get. At any rate, I suspect that many of us would put the story on or near our "top ten" list so how bad can discussing it ONE MORE TIME be? By the way, I note mention on Ms. Pardoe's website that M.R. James's private correspondence illustrates a kind of personal loathing for Machen and his fiction. Does anyone have any idea where this personal repulsion stems from?

(Born Arthur Llewellyn Jones; also wrote under pseudonym of Leolinus Siluriensis) Welsh short story writer, novelist, essayist, autobiographer, translator, and journalist.
    INTRODUCTION
Machen is best known for his tales of bizarre occurrences and supernatual horror. In his short stories he explores the ways in which occult forces reveal the opposing elements of good and evil within human nature. Machen's characters were drawn from the occult and supernatural, such as demons and witches, malignant fairies, evil gods, and creatures speaking unintelligible languages.
    Biographical Information
Machen was born the only son of a clergyman in Caerleon-on-Usk, Wales. He spent a lonely childhood exploring the somber grandeur of the countryside in Gwent, and his youthful fascination with the beauty of the countryside is reflected in his critically admired descriptions of natural phenomena. Machen studied in London to become a surgeon, but failed the examination; subsequently, he began a career in journalism. In 1894 his first collection of short stories, The Great God Pan and the Inmost Light
