Of the two, The Hill of Dreams is considered to be the more successful in terms of literature, while The Three Impostors is frequently comically and mystifyingly bad. (in horror the glancing, the half-seen or felt, is always more powerful than direct description - something Stephen King would have done well to remember) Although more literary and better written, The Hill of Dreams, is rather duller, while still retaining that peculiar and appealing combination of rural, ancient and urban. Although, as I said, MR James does not - his control of light and shade, dream and vision, and tone is unparalleled in all literature to my mind. Some may say he achieved it in a limited area - but to my mind, like making people laugh, making people scared as difficult as any literary task a person can set themselves. There is no middle ground between success and failure. And success is rare. Once again, must apologise for the length.

"Excellently edited by Roger Dobson who displays an impressive knowledge of Machen . . . is an extraordinary achievement" - Phil Baker, Times Literary Supplement
Sumptuous " - Simon Rogers, Book and Magazine Collector
"[A] sumptuous, heavily illustrated edition . . . [Machen's] short stories still resonate with a profound sense of the magical and numinous. And, unlike those of many of his contemporaries the tales retain their ability to unsettle, even disturb. It's this timelessness that makes Machen's stories last so well."

Posted by Darren Turpin on November 14th, 2007 at 8:11 Powered by Gregarious (35) Multiple World Fantasy Award-winning UK independent publisher Tartarus Press recently announced their latest volume of work by the great gothic fantasist Arthur Machen Tartarus' updated edition of Machen's Dreads and Drolls "contains sixty studies, mostly from real life, each of which, by its capacity for inspiring terror or causing amused wonder, qualifies as the 'Dread' or 'Droll' of Arthur Machen's general heading." The Tartarus Press website tells us more about the history of the volume: "When Dreads and Drolls was first published in 1926 it contained twenty-nine articles reprinted from London's The Graphic "We have great pleasure in more than doubling that number by including all of his contributions from that magazine. To 'The Euston Square Mystery', 'The Adventure of the Long-Lost Brother' and others we have been able to add 'A Castle in Celtic Myths', 'A Pretty Parricide', 'One Night When I Was Frightened' and many more.

The rest of the text was scanned and proofed by Celephicus funes@bigpond.com. The resulting composite text was finally proofed using the Everyman edition of "The Three Impostors" (1995). The Everyman text is noted as being that of the original 1895 publication, as subsequent editions had several minor changes and the ellision of the entire chapter "The Novel Of The Iron Maid". The characters Dyson and Phillipps also appear in two subsequent stories written by Arthur Machen, "The Shining Pyramid" and "The Red Hand", the last is probably superior, and was the source of the memorable quote in Lovecraft's "The Horror at Red Hook":

    THE EXPERIMENT
"I am glad you came, Clarke; very glad indeed. I was not sure you could spare the time." "I was able to make arrangements for a few days; things are not very lively just now. But have you no misgivings, Raymond? Is it absolutely safe?" The two men were slowly pacing the terrace in front of Dr. Raymond's house. The sun still hung above the western mountain-line, but it shone with a dull red glow that cast no shadows, and all the air was quiet; a sweet breath came from the great wood on the hillside above, and with it, at intervals, the soft murmuring call of the wild doves. Below, in the long lovely valley, the river wound in and out between the lonely hills, and, as the sun hovered and vanished into the west, a faint mist, pure white, began to rise from the hills. Dr. Raymond turned sharply to his friend. "Safe? Of course it is. In itself the operation is a perfectly simple one; any surgeon could do it."

So complete was Ewans´assurance, so convincing his belief, that although his pronouncement was not taken altogether literally by his listener on that grey Autumn day in October 1930, it emboldened him to continue with his collecting where Machen material was concerned. He was already a confirmed Machenian, was the listener who was myself. But of that moment, it is to be confessed, this book was born.

    AM - Arthur Machen
There are sacraments of evil as well as of good about us, and we live and move to my belief in an unknown world, a place where there are caves and shadows and dwellers in twilight. It is possible that man may sometimes return on the track of evolution, and it is my belief that an awful lore is not yet dead.
-From "The Red Hand" Machen was one of the masters of supernatural fiction whose work immediately preceded and influenced Lovecraft a great deal. I have indexed, in the following stories, just a few key terms and ideas that later found their way into the Mythos.
