THE GREAT GOD PAN by ARTHUR MACHEN I THE EXPERIMENT I am glad you came, Clarke; very glad indeed. I was
not sure you could spare the time." "I was able to make arrangements for a few days; things
are not very lively just now. But have you no misgivings,
Raymond? Is it absolutely safe?" The two men were slowly pacing the terrace in front of
Dr. Raymond's house. The sun still hung above the western
mountain-line, but it shone with a dull red glow that cast no
shadows, and all the air was quiet ; a sweet breath came from the great wood on the hillside above, and with it, at intervals, the soft murmuring call of the wild doves. Below, in the long lovely valley, the river wound in and out between the lonely hills, and, as the sun hovered and vanished into the west, a faint mist, pure white, began to rise from the hills. Dr. Raymond turned sharply to his friend. "Safe? Of course it is. In itself the operation is a perfectly simple one; any surgeon could do it."

In Chapter Three of The London Adventure, Arthur Machen describes his re-examining of an old notebook he used from 1895-98, the period when he was writing "The White People", as well as The Hill of Dreams Ornaments in Jade: MAZE STORY Girl who dances in the Maze was afterwards beset by the influence she had in that manner invoked. after the Hawthorne manner, somewhat: The maze was constructed on a wild, bare hilltop, with innumerable blocks of limestone. It was called "The Way (or Path) to the City." Then follow several sketches, one or two recognizable, as for instance that which later became the story "The Ceremony" in Ornaments in Jade: "...There was an old stone in the wood, on which she often found cottage-garden flowers scattered in summertime..." And a little later, another sketch: "He turned again to the monograph on Labyrinths: he looked at the plates: the various types of mazes (quote passage as to dancing with reference to mazes).

Arthur Machen and the Paleolithic
Arthur Machen was a great writer who influenced many early 20th Century horror and fantastic fiction authors, such as, for instance, H. P. Lovecraft . His stories are still very entertaining reads today and, because most are set in Victorian England, they coincide temporally with the development of anthropology and archaeology as disciplines. This, and the fact that Machen often drew his protagonists from the small bourgeoisie leads to some really neat vignettes, such as this one, from The Red Hand , when two gentlemen taking an evening stroll come upon a murder site and alert the police.

Selected works
The Hill of Dreams - Semi-autobiographical, this recounts a young man's dreamy childhood in rural Wales, and his attempts to make a living as an author in the City. Generally thought to be Machen's greatest work.
The Great God Pan (1894) - A woman has her mind destroyed by an attempt to enable her to see the god of nature. Years later, a young woman, Helen Vaughn arrives on the London social scene, disturbing many young men; it transpires that she is the monstrous offspring of the god Pan and the woman of the experiment.
The White People - a young girl's diary, recounting tales told her by her nurse, and her increasingly deep delvings into magic. Often described as one of the greatest of all horror short stories.
The Novel of the Black Seal - somewhat of a precursor of H. P. Lovecraft in its subject matter, the protagonist gradually uncovers the secrets of a hidden pre- and non- human race hiding in the Welsh hills, and the true nature of a hybrid, idiot child fathered by one of them.
The Novel of the White Powder - A man's behavior takes a strange turn after he starts taking a new prescription. His sister doesn't know if this is a good thing or a bad one...

Arthur Machen For, usually and fitly, the presence of an introduction is held to imply that there is something of consequence and importance to be introduced. Arthur Machen If a man dreams that he has committed a sin before which the sun hid his face, it is often safe to conjecture that, in sheer forgetfulness, he wore a red tie, or brown boots with evening dress. Arthur Machen Introductions, that is, belong to the masterpieces and classics of the world, to the great and ancient and accepted things; and I am here introducing a short, small story of my own which appeared in The Evening News about ten months ago. Arthur Machen It is all nonsense, to be sure; and so much the greater nonsense inasmuch as the true interpretation of many dreams - not by any means of all dreams - moves, it may be said, in the opposite direction to the method of psycho-analysis.
