    Machen was born Arthur Llewelyn Jones , in Caerleon (now part of Newport Monmouthshire , though he usually referred to the county by its Welsh name Gwent . His father, John Edward Jones, became vicar of the tiny church of Llandewi Fach , near Caerleon, and his son was brought up at the rectory there. Later his father adopted his mother's maiden name, Machen, to inherit a legacy, becoming "Jones-Machen", and his son just used the name Arthur Machen as a pen-name. Machen's love of the beautiful landscape of Monmouthshire with its associations with Celtic Roman , and medieval history made a powerful impression on him which is at the heart of many of his works.

A Welsh writer who spent much of his adult life in London, Machen devoted many of his supernaturalist works to an exploration of a mythic vein of the post-Gothic. His works have frequent recourse to the idea that some vestige of a primitive, malefic, pre-Christian "Little People" has survived into the present, and Machen explores the metaphysical implications of this possibility with gusto. Largely eschewing the mid- to late-Victorian interest in the psychological implications of the supernatural, Machen set the stage for the Cthulhu horrors of Lovecraft and others at the same time that his work testifies to the demise of Victorian complacency and self-assurance.

But it was on the most awful day of that awful time, on the day when ruin and disaster came so near that their shadow fell over London far away; and, without any certain news, the hearts of men failed within them and grew faint; as if the agony of the army in the battlefield had entered into their souls. On this dreadful day, then, when three hundred thousand men in arms with all their artillery swelled like a flood against the little English company, there was one point above all other points in our battle line that was for a time in awful danger, not merely of defeat, but of utter annihilation. With the permission of the Censorship and of the military expert, this corner may, perhaps, be described as a salient, and if this angle were crushed and broken, then the English force as a whole would be shattered, the Allied left would be turned, and Sedan would inevitably follow.

B orn Arthur Llewellyn Jones on March 3, 1863 in Caerleon-on-Usk, Wales, Arthur Machen was the author of "The Great God Pan" (1894), The Three Imposters (1890) (an episode novel containing "The Novel of the White Powder", "The Novel of the Black Seal," and others), The Hill of Dreams The Terror (1917) and other supernatural horror. His adopted surname is pronounced mack'n (rhymes with "blacken"). Machen was also an essayist, journalist, Shakespearean actor, occultist (he was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn along with Blackwood, Yeats, Aleister Crowley, and Machen's friend A.E. Waite), and a translator (of Cassanova's Memoirs , Beroalde de Verville's Moyen de Parvenir (Fantastic Tales) , and the Heptameron of Marguerite, Queen of Navarre). His autobiography was issued in three volumes beginning with Far Off Things in 1922 (the title is borrowed from Wordsworth). By the estimate of many, Machen deserves a premier place among the best of his field. Lovecraft counted him foremost of the four "modern masters" of supernatural horror (with Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, and M. R. James): "Of living creators of cosmic fear raised to its most artistic pitch, few if any can hope to equal the versatile Arthur Machen, ... master of an exquisitely lyrical and expressive prose style." Lovecraft ranked Machen's story "The White People" a close second to Blackwood's "The Willows" as the best weird story ever written. The Bowmen and other Legends of the War An extremely rare copy of "The Angel of Mons Waltz," sheet music. One of the many publications inspired by Machen's bowmen story. Thanks to Ray Russell of Tartarus Press and The Friends of Arthur Machen for this jewel.

Arthur Machem The Three Impostors , John Lane, The Bodley Head (1895), first edition. You will probably never see one in this condition again, so take a long hard look. Arthur Machen: Le Grand Dieu Pan. Emil-Paul Freres, Paris, (n.d., but probably 1963)., This is a reprint or reissue ot the tranlstion of The Great God Pan by Paul-Jean Toulet, first published by Emil-Paul in 1938. This edition has the original advertising band.which ties in with Pauwels and Bergier's Le Matin Des Magicians (1960) . Paul-Jean Toulet translated Machen's book in 1899, but had trouble getting it published in book form. Toulet also engaged engaged in a rather interesting series of letters with Machen Pauwels and Bergier's book was probably responsible for rekindling interest in Machen's work in the 1960s and 1970s.

Biography
Arthur Machen was born in Caerleon-on-Usk in South Wales, and looked back upon his youth in this part of the Gwent border country as an inspiration for much of his writing. He moved to London as a young man and spent the greater part of his adult life in the city, at first as a book cataloguer, translator, journalist and, for some years, as an actor. All of his work, from his prose poems through to his journalism are written with an incantatory elegance and beauty.
Machen achieved his first success, and notoriety, with The Great God Pan (1894), published in John Lane's Keynotes series with a cover design by Aubrey Beardsley. Although this associated him with the Decadent figures of the 1890s, he did not move in those circles, only meeting Oscar Wilde twice. In this period, however, he wrote arguably his most important work, including the semi-autobiographical novel The Hill of Dreams (not published until 1907) and the prose poems

Williams and Norgate Ltd: London (1950) OF LIVING people known to me none I think more, so he has no time, is too preoccupied with seeing to feel, and here is where the artist comes neatly in to rescue me, he having heard what the scientist says, having time, too, to admire, and to tell of it in innuendoes, with winks, saying: "It is not dull! I know a thing or two, I know a bank whereon the wild thyme grows!" And if one asks him: "But is that all?" he winks at one, saying: "Enough said; I give you a hint: eye has not seen, never heart fancied; tolling melodious notes, wrung with emotion, it rolls; fairy! drunken! enough said." But is it true? Fairy? If it is a fancy, then it is not of the least interest or importance; but the scientist says "yes, a fact", and the artist with streaming tears calls God to witness it.
