Machado was born in Seville one year after his brother Manuel . The family moved to Madrid in and both brothers enrolled in the Instituci³n Libre de Ense±anza. During these years, and with the encouragement of his teachers, Antonio discovered his passion for literature. While completing his Bachillerato in Madrid , economic difficulties forced him to take several jobs including working as an actor. In 1899 he travelled with his brother to Paris to work as translators for a French publisher. During these months in Paris he came into contact with the great French Symbolist poets Jean Mor©as Paul Fort and Paul Verlaine , and also with other contemporary literary figures, including Rub©n Daro and Oscar Wilde . These encounters cemented Machado's decision to dedicate himself to poetry. In 1901 he had his first poems published in the literary journal 'Electra'. His first book of

Antonio Machado
LANDS OF CASTILE and Other Poems (Campos de Castillas)
Translated, with an Introduction, by Paul Burns and Salvador Ortiz-Carboneres
Antonio Machado was born in Seville in 1885 and died in southern France early in 1939, escaping from the Nationalist advance in the Spanish Civil War. He is increasingly recognized as one of the three or four greatest Spanish-language poets of the twentieth century, but lack of adequate translations has limited his appreciation in the English-speaking world. Here a native Spanish and a native English speaker set out to remedy this deficiency.
Machado left Soria immediately after Leonor's death, saved from suicide, as he claimed, by the book's success, which showed him he still had work to do. After some years teaching in Baeza, he moved back to Castile, dividing his life between teaching in Segovia and the literary and theatrical circles of Madrid. His tone became more philosophical, meditating constantly on identity, inventing the philosopher Juan de Mairena and his master Abel Martin to pursue his dialogues on appearances, illusions, personality, mystery, dreams and death. The language of his poems is spare, relying strongly on nouns and adjectives, asserting more than describing, equally anti-baroque and against the 'excesses of modern cosmetics' (Self Portrait). His father had been a collector of folklore, and Machado saw the romance (ballad) tradition as lying at the heart of the authentic Spanish poetic tradition. English cannot recreate the assonance on which he relied, but this translation captures the essential rhythm as well as the poignancy of the original.

Your footsteps are the path, and nothing else;
there is no path, paths are made by walking.
Walking makes the path, and on looking back
We see a trail that never can be walked again.
Traveler, there is no path,
Only a wake in the sea. - Antonio Machado

I Have Walked Down Many Roads
by Antonio Machado
I have walked down many roads
and cleared many paths;
I have navigated a hundred oceans
and anchored off a hundred shores. All over, I have seen
caravans of sadness,
pompous and melancholy men
drunk with black shadows, and defrocked pedants
who stare, keep quiet, and think
drink wine in the neighborhood bars. Bad people who go around
polluting the earth . . . And all over, I have seen
people who dance or play, when they can, and work their four handfuls of land. If they turn up someplace, they never ask where they are. When they travel, they ride on the backs of old mules, not even on holidays. These are good people, who live, work, get by, and dream; and on a day like all the others they lie down under the earth. He begins to see his dead wife as his divine beloved, ever present, ever calling to him, yet ever just out of reach so union can only be found in a mystical embrace. In this way, his unsatisfied romantic yearning was elevated to an experience of the sacred, similar to that sought by the troubadour mystics several centuries earlier.
When his poems speak of this beloved woman, read into it the divine, and see what meaning emerges. http://www.ctspanish.com/literature/machado.htm
Antonio Machado Machado is perhaps the most popular poet in Spain. Antonio was born in Seville in 1875, but moved to Madrid at the age of 8 and subsequently to Soria, where he taught French. His early poetry, including Soledades (1903) and Soledades, galerías y otros poemas (1907) were strongly influenced by the French modernista movement. His marriage in 1909 to 16-year old Leonor resulted in his happiest and most fertile poetic period, including what is arguably his best work, Campos de Castilla (1912). During this time, the dominant themes in his poetry were nature, Castile and the Romancero (ballads). Tragically, his wife died only five years into their marriage and Machado moved from their home in Soria to Baeza. Machado later returned to his more simplistic approach and subject matter later in life. Antonio was yet another victim of the Spanish Civil War. He traveled to Valencia at the start of the Civil War where he supported the Republic. In February, 1939, he fled across the Pyrenees with his mother and a brother, but became ill during the trip and died shortly thereafter in Collioure. Machado's Obras Completas (Complete Works) were published in 1947.
