Fairfield University and the United States Supreme Court
One of the more important events in the history of our University is the 5-4 decision of the United States Supreme Court in 1971 that upheld the access of Fairfield University to federal funding. The split decision of the Court rejected the claim that we are a religious university not entitled to these funds. I include access from my home page to this complete decision of the Court from 1971 because it is so important to understanding the nature of our Jesuit University in the present. In those earlier years we were operating in the red. Without this decision allowing the availability of government funding the university might have gone out of existence. Now advocates for government funding of non-secular primary and secondary schools are claiming that this decision by the Supreme Court affecting higher education also applies to those schools! This home page is used in conjunction with my courses at Fairfield University in our Chemistry Department and is intended primarily for my students. A

John MacDonald
Laird of Glenaladale and Glenfinnan, philanthropist, colonizer, soldier, born in Glenaladale, Scotland , about 1742; died at Tracadie, Prince Edward Island, Canada , 1811; he was the son of Alexander and Margaret (MacDonnell of Scotus ). He entered the Scots College Ratisbon Bavaria , in 1756, and there completed his education . Returning to Scotland , his high personal character and distinguished mentality were quickly recognized. The MacDonalds of Glenaladale are the senior cadet branch of the MacDonalds of Clanranald, and Captain MacDonald was chosen "Tanister" or second in command to, and representative of, his chief. It was an evil time for Jacobite Scotland , especially for Catholic Jacobite Scotland . The Catholic Jacobite was cruelly persecuted , and Alexander MacDonald of Boisdale, South Uist, a former Catholic , outdid others in severity by compelling his tenants either to renounce their faith or lose their land and homes. They chose to emigrate to America, but, being utterly destitute, found this impossible. Hearing of their pitiable

Sir John Alexander Macdonald
From LoveToKnow 1911
SIR JOHN ALEXANDER MACDONALD (1815-1891), first premier of the dominion of Canada , was born in Glasgow on the 11 th of January 1815, the third child of Hugh Macdonald (d. 1841), a native of Sutherlandshire . The family emigrated to Canada in 1820, settling first at Kingston Ontario . At the age of fifteen Macdonald entered a law office; he was called to the bar in 1836, and began practice in Kingston, with immediate success. Macdonald entered upon his active career at a critical period in the history of Canada, and the circumstances of the time were calculated to stimulate political thought. It was the year before the rebellion of 1837; the condition of the whole country was very unsettled; and it seemed well-nigh impossible to reconcile differences arising from racial and political antagonisms. During the rebellion young Macdonald volunteered for active service, but his military career never went farther than drilling and marching. The mission of Lord Durham ; the publication of his famous report; the union of the two Canadas; the administrations of Lord Sydenham , Sir Charles Bagot, and Sir Charles Metcalfe , filled the years immediately succeeding 1837 with intense political interest, and in their results have profoundly influenced the constitution of the British Empire Macdonald made his first acquaintance with public business as an alderman of Kingston. In 1844 Sir Charles Metcalfe, in his contest with the Reform party led by Baldwin and Lafontaine, appealed to the

INTERVIEW WITH JOHN D. MacDONALD, by Ed Gorman
I interviewed John D. MacDonald three times over the years, twice for Mystery Scene . He generally hated giving interviews. I think this one was an exception. His wife was ill, and he was starting to experience health problems of his own.
A Key To The Suite (about a sales convention) and Slam The Big Door (the hollowness of success). Most of us die little deaths except for the final big death. We lose jobs, mates, dignity. Key , for instance, charts the demise of several careers and at least two marriages in ways every bit as powerful and memorable as any shootout.
Dead Low Tide and The End of The Night
The Damned proved that you are a born mainstream novelist. Do you recall the circumstances under which the book was written, and were you aware it was taking your career in a slightly new direction?
I was not trying to fit books into market slots. I wrote The Damned because I knew the locale, and I was interested in what would happen if a lot of people got jammed up at the crossing. A lot of things would happen to them, and that is the definition of a story.
While the critics have always talked about how Travis McGee puts rather helpless women back together, female characters such as Laurie in

75. A Reducibly Complex Mousetrap
Send comments to john H. McDonald (mcdonald@udel.edu). This page was last revised March 24, 2002. Its URL is http//udel.edu/~mcdonald/mousetrap.html.
http://udel.edu/~mcdonald/mousetrap.html
A reducibly complex mousetrap Creationist Michael Behe has been attracting a lot of attention recently with his advocacy of the "intelligent design" argument. He makes the claim that certain biochemical processes are "irreducibly complex": they involve multiple proteins, and removing any one of them would destroy the function of the overall pathway. From this he concludes that these pathways could not have evolved through the action of natural selection, but instead must have been created by an "intelligent designer." To illustrate the concept of irreducibly complexity, Behe uses the common snap mousetrap. "If any one of the components of the mousetrap (the base, hammer, spring, catch, or holding bar) is removed, then the trap does not function. In other words, the simple little mousetrap has no ability to trap a mouse until several separate parts are all assembled. Because the mousetrap is necessarily composed of several parts, it is irreducibly complex." (Behe, 1996). It is not my purpose here to point out all of the philosophical flaws in Behe's argument; this has been done thoroughly in many of the resources collected on John Catalano's excellent web page . Instead, I wish to point out that the mousetrap that Behe uses as an analogy CAN be reduced in complexity and still function as a mousetrap. The mousetrap illustrates one of the fundamental flaws in the intelligent design argument: the fact that one person can't imagine something doesn't mean it is impossible, it may just mean that the person has a limited imagination. Behe's evidence that biochemical pathways are intelligently designed is that Behe can't imagine how they could function without all of their parts, but given how easy it is to reduce the complexity of a mousetrap, I'm not convinced. (Of course, the reduced-complexity mousetraps shown below are intended to point out one of the logical flaws in the intelligent design argument; they're not intended as an analogy of how evolution works.)

Phone Interview
January 24th, 2008 by MacBros - 87 Peepers read this post.
I got a phone call from the Tech Support job that I applied for last week. It was basically an over the phone interview. I was asked a few questions about my computer and internet knowledge, and why I believe I would be a good candidate for the job. You know, the usually job interview questions. I really hope that I do, because this sounds like something right up my alley. As I do consider myself as a bit of an Internet junkie really. This morning, they were so kind as to bring in this enormous Pepsi machine into the hallway, making a ton of noise doing it. They were hollering, yelling, laughing, and making a racket that was really unnecessary. They totally disregarded the signs in the hallway that read basically to shut the fuck up in the hallways. So that got me up a few hours earlier than I had planned. Bookmark It

Yellow House , this comes off as lo-fi freak-folk experimentation with oodles of horns, tape loops, and found sounds burbling in the corners of their eerie tunes. One wondered how Grizzly Bear would ever pull it all off live. Their tour-capping gig at the Bowery certainly answered that question.
