Sir John A. Macdonald RELATED LINKS COUNCIL SALUTES Kingston's municipal politicians offer a tribute to Macdonald during birthday Council meeting. RESTING PLACE The famous Cataraqui Cemetary is a veritable Who's Who of Kingston's past.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1815, John Alexander Macdonald emigrated to Canada with his parents at age five. Macdonald attended the Midland Grammar and the John Cruickshank School in Kingston before articling with George Mackenzie, a Kingston lawyer. Mackenzie was so impressed with Macdonald that he sent him to open a law office in Napanee. When Mackenzie died in 1835, Macdonald returned to Kingston to open his own legal practice. In 1836, he was called to the bar. By 1843, Macdonald's law office had become one of the busiest in Canada. The following year, he was appointed as a city councillor. In 1844 Macdonald decided to run for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Canada, which then consisted of Canada West (formerly Upper Canada) and Canada East (formerly Lower Canada, now Quebec). The two colonies were divided by nationality, with English prominent in the West, and French in the east. Both colonies voted separately and each named a Premier. Macdonald won by a large majority and was elected as the Conservative (Tory) representative for Kingston. Macdonald was a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party. The election of 1848 saw the Conservatives lose to the Reformers, a rival party. Macdonald was one of the few Conservatives to retain his seat. Over the next few years, he endeavored to broaden the appeal of his party. Macdonald's efforts were recognized in 1854 when the Conservatives and the radical Clear Grits (Liberals) defeated the Reform Party.

Her misfortune has been to meet up with Junior Allen, "a smiling, freckle-face stranger" with depravity on his mind and a more odious person you don't want to meet. There is also something about missing inheritance. McGee is unable to resist and from the moment he accepts the challenge, the reader is glued to the pages This series is a classic! John A. MacDonald Was The Dark Horse Hi All,
The Besnard Lakes were in town last Wednesday at the Starlite Room here in Edmonton. They were the first of a number of shows that I'm going to this month. DJ Champion lived up to everything good I've ever said about his shows the day after the Besnard Lakes. The next of these series of October shows in Edmonton that I am attending is the New Pornographers. They're in town tomorrow, the 11th.
Here's two tracks from the Besnard Lakes. "And You Lied To Me," was the reason I missed the last train away from downtown. I wanted to stay longer to hear them play it. "You've Got To Want To Be A Star" is 9 killer minutes from the Besnard Lakes' elusive first CD "Volume 1."

Feb. 19, 2006 12:00 AM Oprah missed her chance, and I feel like the only one who noticed.
Weeks have passed since the noise over best-selling author James Frey hit its crescendo: his squirmy but fascinating grilling in front of the entire TV-talk-show-watching world over his fake memoir, A Million Little Pieces. Ms. Oprah was mad and embarrassed, and Mr. Frey was paying the price. In an oddly frank manner, he admitted making stuff up. When the show ended, so did the controversy - Oprah verbally slapped Frey around, something many of his readers would have done if they'd had a talk show. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd') After some time to reflect, to step back from the hype and anger, it's clear the entire saga taught us many things we already knew. People will lie to make money. Drug addicts are notorious liars. A tight perm is a bad look on a guy. Publishers like to earn profits. Ooh, girl, Oprah can throw down!
