John D. MacDonald's Lush Landscape of Crime
By Jonathan Yardley Tuesday, November 11, 2003; Page C01 An occasional series in which The Post's book critic reconsiders notable and/or neglected books from the past. For my money, John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee is one of the great characters in contemporary American fiction not crime fiction; fiction, period and millions of readers surely agree. There are, as is announced across the top of each Fawcett Crest paperback volume in the series, "32 Million Travis McGee Books in Print!" Most of the other crime novels that MacDonald wrote over his long and astonishingly prolific career have been consigned to out-of-print oblivion in many cases most undeservedly so but Travis rolls along, keeping MacDonald's memory alive and reminding us that he was a far more accomplished and important novelist than is generally recognized.
John MacDonald was unfairly pigeonholed as a genre writer.

Sir John A. Macdonald has been described as a pragmatic statesman, earning the title of Old Chieftain, and a procrastinating drunk with the nickname of Old Tomorrow. But there's no denying the legacy of Canada's first prime minister. He united the country with his national vision and the construction of the world's longest railway. Macdonald would overcome personal hurdles, albeit with the help of the bottle, to lay the foundation for modern Canada.

Any plausible-looking person can find many ways to come and go unimpeded. Anything that can be flown or floated can be brought in or taken out. We are but a wide place in the road in the middle of the world, and they wander through, back and forth, marveling at the lack of restraints. It is a paradox. The openness which endangers our system is the product of the policy which says that to close our borders and enforce all our rules and back them up with guns would change the system just as completely as any alien force. Terrorism is going to pay us one fat bloody visit. But it will only be a visit. They underestimate our national resilience. Aroused by that kind of savagery, we will become a very tough kind of people." John D. MacDonald. Taken from "The Green Ripper" 1979.

Executive summary: Canadian Prime Minister, founding father The experiment of applying responsible government on party lines to the two Canadian provinces at last seemed to have come to a deadlock. Two general elections and the defeat of four ministries within three years had done nothing to solve the difficulties of the situation. At this critical period a proposal was made for a coalition of parties in order to carry out a broad scheme of British-American confederation. The immediate proposal is said to have come from George Brown; the large political idea had long been advocated by Macdonald and Alexander Galt in Upper Canada by Joseph Howe During the remaining years of his life his efforts at administration were directed mainly towards the organization and development of the great Northwest. From 1878 until his death in 1891 Sir John retained his position as premier of Canada, and his history is practically that of Canada. For forty-six years of a stormy political life he remained true to the cardinal policy that he had announced to the electors of Kingston in 1844. "A British subject I was born; a British subject I will die", says his last political manifesto to the people of the Dominion. At his advanced age the anxiety and excitement of the contested election of 1891 proved too great. On the 29th of May he suffered a stroke of paralysis, which caused his death eight days later (June 6).

Insert Text here for short Quote Prime Minister from July 1,1867 - November 5,1873 October 17,1878 - June 6,1891 Jan 11, 1815 - June 6, 1891 The Father of Confederation MacDonald pulled himself together and stood up for his rebuttal and quietly said " I get sick sometimes not because of drink or any other cause, except that I am forced to listen to the ranting of my honorable opponent." MacDonald’s family left Glasgow Scotland in 1820 and emigrated to Kingston Ontario. He grew up under stressful financial circumstances and by fifteen was out working and soon thereafter was articling at a law firm. He answered the call in 1837 when William Lyon Mackenzie lead the march on York and tried to upset the family compact. In 1840 when Upper and Lower Canada set up a joint legislative assembly, MacDonald opposed this union and also spoke out against expanding the union to the Maritimes. He joined the joint Canadian parliament in 1843 and supported the conservative forces in the house. MacDonald realized that the governing power in the joint Canada House would have to be a wide coalition of interests and beliefs. MacDonald’s great opponent, George Brown led the Clear Grits, "all sand and no dirt, clear all the way through." He was an anti-papist and hence never gained much support from Lower Canada. MacDonald was very open to dealing and ruling with the Lower Canadian population, be they English or French. He developed a great ally in George Etienne Cartier who led the Lower Canadian section of their party supporters.

Big Dig firm apologizes, considers fund for repairs
December 3, 2004 Top executives of the company managing the Big Dig, testifying at a packed State House hearing yesterday, apologized for lapses that led to a massive leak in the Interstate 93 northbound tunnel wall on Sept. 15, and agreed to consider the creation of an unusual escrow fund to pay for future leak repairs. The conciliatory remarks constituted the first admission of a major mistake by Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff since engineering work began on the project two decades ago. In addition to the apology, Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff chairman John MacDonald said the firm would pay, along with the construction firms involved, for the cost of repairing the wall damaged by the September leak, and made the same pledge to cover the bill for inspecting thousands of additional wall panels for possible flaws in coming weeks. ''We apologize for our mistakes," MacDonald said of the leak, which occurred in a section of the tunnel wall that Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff engineers knew to be structurally flawed when it was built in 1999. MacDonald expressed openness to the establishment of the escrow fund, proposed by Senator Steven A. Baddour, cochairman of the Legislature's Joint Transportation Committee, which held the hearings. Baddour is pushing for the fund to make sure that money is available to continue leak repairs even after Bechtel Corp. of San Francisco and Parsons Brinckerhoff of New York leave town when construction of the Big Dig is complete next year.
