In 1867, at the age of 52, Macdonald married his second wife Susan Agnes Bernard (1836-1920). They had one daughter, Margaret Mary Theodora Macdonald (1869-1933), who was born with hydrocephalus and suffered from physical and mental disabilities. Macdonald always hoped she would recover, but she never did. Source: en.wikipedia.org As often as John could he would make the long trip down to Georgia to visit Isabella. In 1847, Isabella was expecting a baby and went back to New York to be looked after by a doctor there. On August 2nd, the baby was born and they named him John Alexander after his proud father. Isabella, at first, was too weak to leave New York. John's older sister Margaret brought the baby home to care for him while Isabella recuperated. It wasn't until June of 1848 that she finally was able to undertake the trip back to Kingston. Source: jackfruitpress.com

Best known as the creator of Travis McGee , John Dann MacDonald was one of the last of the old pulpsters to continue writing fiction successfully, making a name for himself in the burgeoning paperback market of the fifties, and continuing to appear on the bestseller lists well into the eighties in fact. In his long career, he produced over seventy books, mostly in the hardboiled/crime vein, although he did produce some decent work in science fiction, romance and other genres. He even produced some notable non-fiction, particularly No Deadly Drug , a true crime book, and The House Guests , a cat's eye view of the world. He was born in Pennsylvania, and received his MBA at Harvard, but moved to Florida after World War II. While stationed in the Far East, to amuse himself he wrote a short story, and sent it to his wife. His wife loved it, and supposedly without MacDonald's permission, submitted it to the prestigious slick, Story, where it was accepted. Inspired by this success, MacDonald decided to become a writer, and upon his return Stateside, he wrote hundreds of stories, mostly for the pulps. He continued to pump them out, until, as he put it, "the last of them were shot out from under me." Fortunately, just as the pulps were dying out, MacDonald was able to catch the rising wave of the paperback boom. From 1950 until he released his first Travis Mcgee novel, he published over forty PBO's, all stand-alones. His crime novels of this period are masters of the form spare, tight, often dark and even nasty tales of desperate men in way over their heads; taut morbid fables with psychological underpinnings and a burgeoning environmental awareness, often set in his adopted state of Florida. It was these books that served him well when he finally unleashed his series character, the colourful and larger-than-life

John D(ann) MacDonald (1916-1986) American mystery writer, one of the great names of the genre, who establish his name in the pulps. MacDonald created his famous series character Travis McGee in his forty-fourth novel THE DEEP BLUE GOOD-BY in 1964, and went on to write twenty-one books about the most "colorful" of all unlicensed private detectives - each novel in the McGee series contains a color in the title. The awarded mystery writer and critic H.R.F. Keating selected MacDonald's THE GREEN RIPPER (1979) in 1987 for his list of the one hundred best crime novels. "The twenty-odd McGee books... are, in fact, perhaps our best example of the crime story as a novel of feelings. In this it is not unfair to compare MacDonald to Charles Dickens, although Dickens had of course an infinitely wider range. But it is Dickens the novelist of feelings, of sentiment, and of sentimentality, that MacDonald brings to mind." (Keating in John D. MacDonald was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. degree from Syracuse University in 1938, and earned a Harvad M.B.A. in 1939. In 1937 he married Dorothy Mary Prentiss; they had one son. During World War II he served in the Office of Strategic Services (1940-46), the forerunner of the CIA, and in the Burma-China-India theatre. He began during this time write fiction, and sold later all kinds of stories - sports, science, adventure, fantasy - to a number of magazines. His first story was published in

John A. Macdonald was Canada's first prime minister, and was knighted for his efforts in bringing about Confederation. His role in creating Canada, and the realization of his dream to build a transcontinental railway, have fixed his place as a nation-builder in Canadian history. John Alexander Macdonald was born at Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Hugh Macdonald and Helen Shaw. When he was five years old, the family moved to Kingston, Upper Canada. At the age of 15, he began legal studies in Kingston, and by the age of 19 opened his own law office there. He became known as a quick-witted and ingenious trial lawyer. Later, he was named solicitor for both of Kingston's banks. He was married twice, to Isabella Clark on September 1, 1843 (d. 1857), and to Susan Agnes Bernard on February 16, 1867. Macdonald was interested in public life from an early age, holding offices with a variety of boards and societies before becoming an alderman for Kingston in 1843. In 1844 he entered provincial politics as a Conservative member for Kingston, acting as receiver-general. After the defeat of the government early in 1848, Macdonald spent the time in opposition working for the interests of his party. He helped form the 1854 coalition with Upper Canadian reformers and French Canadians, creating the Liberal-Conservative Party (forerunner of today's Conservative Party.) With this coalition in power, Macdonald was appointed to the office of attorney-general. Later he acted as co-premier, first with

SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD Victory, tragedy, alcoholism and national pride would mark the life of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. Macdonald is best known as the founding father of Canada, who united the French and the English and who facilitated the construction of Canadian Pacific Railway. Macdonald was a deft politician, able to balance the various interests of the nation. The characteristics that made him such an effective leader are the same ones that define Canada as a nation. Sir John A. Macdonald Macdonald was born January 10, 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland to an unsuccessful merchant, Hugh Macdonald, and his wife, Helen Shaw. Hugh wanted a new start - he decided to move his family to Kingston (Upper Canada) in 1820. Hugh's fortunes were to rise there. Macdonald was educated in the area's finest schools, and he established his own law practice in Kingston at the age of 19. By the time he was elected to represent Kingston in the Legislative Assembly of Canada in 1844, he had become a successful lawyer and businessman, holding directorships with at least 10 companies. In that time, he also married his cousin Isabella Clark. Two years after the wedding, Isabella started to deteriorate, stricken by a mystery illness. She bore him two boys, the first died after 13 months and the second, Hugh John, would become a prosperous lawyer. Isabella died in 1857.
