The Golden Key
George MacDonald
The Golden Key This version of The Golden Key There was a boy And the boy went to bed and dreamed about the golden key. Now all that his great-aunt told the boy about the golden key would have been nonsense, had it not been that their little house stood on the borders of Fairyland. For it is perfectly well known that out of Fairyland nobody ever can find where the rainbow stands. The creature takes such good care of its golden key, always flitting from place to place, lest any one should find it! But in Fairyland it is quite different. Things that look real in this country look very thin indeed in Fairyland, while some of the things that here cannot stand still for a moment, will not move there. So it was not in the least absurd of the old lady to tell her nephew such things about the golden key. Suddenly, far among the trees, as far as the sun could shine, he saw a glorious thing. It was the end of a rainbow, large and brilliant. He could count all seven colours, and could see shade after shade beyond the violet; while before the red stood a colour more gorgeous and mysterious still. It was a colour he had never seen before. Only the spring of the rainbow-arch was visible. He could see nothing of it above the trees. He had not gone far before the sun set. But the rainbow only glowed the brighter. For the rainbow of Fairyland is not dependent upon the sun, as ours is. The trees welcomed him. The bushes made way for him. The rainbow grew larger and brighter; and at length he found himself within two trees of it.

George Macdonald Fraser
Tom Brown's School Days is a famous book set in the context of Tom's experience at an English boys boarding school. In that book, a boy named Flashman makes a minor appearance as a bully and cad. Forward to 1968 and Flashman makes his literary debut as a self-penned chronicler of some of the epic events of English and World history during the 19th century. Flashman is everywhere from the Crimea to the American Civil War, apparently saving the day and playing a material role in the events in question. At the same time he manages to bed over 400 women (while also maintaining a marriage to a nymphomaniac), is routinely captured, tortured (in some unlikely ways) and escapes. Through complete incompetence and cowardice he always manages to end up looking like the hero.
The entire series of books was based on G M Fraser finding a collection of memoirs at a house sale and it written in the first person narrated by Flashman. They are all hilarious and historically accurate but with respect to Flashman entirely fiction. Fraser made up the entire story of Flashman's travels through British History but what a ride it was. Each book included a sizable addendum that noted the significance of the events, places and people mentioned in each episode. As someone interested in history, these sections were almost as interesting as the fictional work that preceded.

I bought his new book The Reavers last week, along with his Flashman on the March (I really like the new uniform editions), Bill Bryson's Shakespeare and Terry's Making Money (am I right in believing that Moist von Lipwig is another of his great characters?)
I got to The Reavers over the Bank Holiday weekend. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. How on earth do I start to criticise a writer with so much more cred than me?
Well, like this...
The quick in-shop glance through The Reavers that prompted me to buy it suggested that I was looking at another "romp" in the style of his much earlier book, The Pyrates . I really enjoyed (and still enjoy) this one; it's in paperback, and if you like that sort of thing, it's well worth having. At the risk of sounding like the book's own back-cover copy, this is a splendid, sprawling, deliberately anachronistic and very funny take-off on classic swashbuckling and pirate (surprise!) movies and novels, complete with the "Ar-har, lookee now an' belike" dialogue used in Jeffrey Farnol's books, by Robert Newton playing Long John Silver in

Home About Perceptric Brands Change ... Main Page Previous: The Important News Next: John Edwards George MacDonald Fraser by Chris Gilbey Permanent Link Cosmos George MacDonald Fraser died a couple of weeks ago.
I remember reading some of his Flashman books when they first came out, many years ago. Not only was Fraser a very witty and satirical author, he was also a very successful screenplay writer, his most successful works being The Three Musketeers...
Before he died, Fraser wrote a really good piece about political correctness
Here is some of that article:
When 30 years ago I resurrected Flashman, the bully in Thomas Hughes's Victorian novel Tom Brown's Schooldays, political correctness hadn't been heard of, and no exception was taken to my adopted hero's character, behaviour, attitude to women and subject races (indeed, any races, including his own) and general awfulness.
On the contrary, it soon became evident that these were his main attractions. He was politically incorrect with a vengeance. Through the Seventies and Eighties I led him on his disgraceful way, toadying, lying, cheating, running away, treating women as chattels, abusing inferiors of all colours, with only one redeeming virtue - the unsparing honesty with which he admitted to his faults, and even gloried in them.
