Betty MacDonald at the peak of her success in 1946
Betty MacDonald developed a huge following in the 1940s and 50s with her comic tales of everyday life in the Pacific Northwest. The Egg and I , her first million-dollar seller, was a bleakly humorous account of chicken farming near Chimacum on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. She moved there in the late 1920s with her first husband, Robert Heskett. The marriage lasted four years. In 1942 Betty married Don MacDonald, started writing and quickly became a celebrity. A film version of The Egg and I starred Fred McMurray and Claudette Colbert and spawned a series of Ma and Pa Kettle movies. Onions in the Stew describes her years on Vashon Island, Washington; while The Plague and I is an upbeat account of her battle with tuberculosis at age 30. Her children's novels include Nancy and Plum and the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle series.

Betty MacDonald is perhaps best known as the author of The Egg And I . First published in 1945, the book hilariously describes Betty's life as a young wife on a chicken ranch on the Olympic peninsula. The Egg And I sold more than a million copies its first year in print and was made into a film starring Claudette Colbert as Betty. Its success catapulted Betty MacDonald into worldwide fame. What many fans of the book don't know is that Betty, who lived most of her life in King County, published three other autobiographical books, Anybody Can Do Anything The Plague And I , and Onions In The Stew The Plague And I manages to find Betty's own humor even in the grave face of her confinement to Firland Sanatorium with tuberculosis in the days before antibiotics.

    Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, by Betty MacDonald
(This is not the picture on the cover of MY book - thank goodness! I have an older copy. I can't say that I'm a fan of the new art translation.)
I read the book Hello, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle first (late last year) and just completed reading Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle , which makes everything make more sense! I wish I had started with the first book, because it gives a better description of who Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle is (and what she looks like) but, nevertheless, I found both books rather enjoyable.
I came across the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books through a recommendation on Semicolon's Saturday Review . (My apologies! I deleted my link for who the recommender was!) I'm glad I did for I thought this was a cute idea.
For those of you unfamiliar with Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, she is an "old maid" who knows how to cure the worst of childhood bad behaviors, such as slow-eater-tiny-bite-taker issues as well as the won't-pick-up-toys ailments. Her methods are creative and effective. The parents in her small town would seem to be clueless without her! So, I suppose, thank goodness for Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle!
It's a cute series, listed as a good read for ages 6-10. However, I think it can be enjoyed by people ages 20+ if you still have an imagination about you.

    40. Betty Harrington Macdonald, Essay By Jann Haynes Gilmore

    http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/3aa/3aa64.htm
    Biggs Museum of American Art
    Dover, Delaware
http://www.biggsmuseum.org The following essay was first published in connection with the Museum's exhibition "Painting Ever Since She Can Remember: Works by Betty Harrington Macdonald," held from October 21 to November 29, 1998. Essay reprinted with permission of the Biggs Museum of American Art. Betty Harrington Macdonald by Dr. Jann Haynes Gilmore "I have painted ever since I can remember." Eighty-six years ago, Elizabeth Watson Harrington was born in Dover, Delaware, on July 19, 1912, to Chancellor (1874-1959) and Mrs. William Watson Harrington (1875-1966), as the middle child between two sisters, Sarah and Anna Banks, who was called Nancy. Tracing her ancestors back to the American Revolution, she was steeped in American and Delaware history by both her parents who were "great historians." Her father was the Presiding Judge of the Court of Chancery, Delaware's Court of Equity which is based upon an old English model. Her mother, Sarah Godwin from Milford, also had an abiding love for history and her family owned farming interests east of Frederica, acquired from the Indians, from which grain, primarily wheat and corn, was shipped on the Murderkill River up to Philadelphia, and from there, to all ports of call. Betty Harrington also acquired a love for history from her paternal aunt, Jessie Harrington, who became an expert on colonial history, especially decorative arts, and wrote a definitive book on early Delaware silver.
